This is a 5 day self-drive short break itinerary that travels the South Island of New Zealand, starting and finishing in Christchurch.
Upon arrival in Christchurch, make your way towards your accommodation at the centrally located Ramada Suites Christchurch.
Embark on an awe-inspiring adventure aboard the TranzAlpine Rail Journey. Traverse New Zealand’s picturesque landscapes, from Christchurch to Greymouth, and witness breathtaking vistas of majestic mountains, lush forests, and pristine rivers. Once you have arrived in Greymouth, collect your hire car and make your way south to Hokitika.
Hokitika, a charming coastal town on New Zealand’s West Coast, offers a range of exciting activities. Explore the mesmerizing Hokitika Gorge with its turquoise waters, stroll along the rugged beach to search for unique jade stones, and visit the local art studios to witness the craftsmanship of the region’s renowned greenstone carvers. Don’t miss the opportunity to indulge in delicious whitebait, a local delicacy, for a true Hokitika experience. Make your way back to Greymouth.
Greymouth is an iconic West Coast destination for any New Zealand itinerary. Enjoy a scenic walk along the rugged coastline, discover the history of gold mining at Shantytown Heritage Park or visit Monteith’s Brewing Company to learn about the art of craft beer brewing.
Continue to your next destination of Westport. On the way don’t miss the chance to experience the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes in nearby Punakaiki, where you’ll witness incredible rock formations and powerful ocean geysers.
Spend the morning within Westport where you may choose to explore the pristine beaches of Cape Foulwind and Tauranga Bay, where you can witness fascinating wildlife, including fur seals and seabirds. Then drive back to Christchurch and return your rental car to the airport.
