Day 1
Arrive Wellington

Welcome to Wellington On arrival at Wellington Airport you’ll be met by private car and transferred to your hotel. The afternoon is at leisure for you to explore Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. You may like to take a walk along Lambton Quay and immerse yourself Wellington’s famous coffee culture. Or meander along the waterfront following the Wellington Writer’s Walk, where quotes from New Zealand writers are celebrated in large stone sculptures. This evening meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers for a welcome drink and dinner back at your hotel.

Stay: Sofitel Wellington (2 nights) (D)

Day 2
Wellington "Day at Leisure"

Today is a completely free day for you to experience the sights of Wellington. Perhaps join a tour of New Zealand’s Parliament buildings and the ‘Beehive’ or take a ride on Wellington’s famous cable car from the central business district up to the Kelburn lookout for stunning views of the city. You may want to experience the wonder of the special effects world with a tour out to the Weta Cave – the home of the creative wizards behind the Lord of the Rings and Hobbits trilogies. Or learn about New Zealand’s history and culture with a visit to Te Papa, New Zealand’s museum. Your Travel Director will assist you in booking all of your chosen optional experiences. This evening why not venture down to Courtenay Place or Cuba Street and dine at one of Wellington’s tucked-away bars or quirky cafés (B)

Day 3
Wellington - Taupo

You’ll travel along the rugged Kapiti Coast, past the dairy farms of the Manawatu through to Tongariro National Park. In a country of contrasts, perhaps nothing is more striking than the three peaks of Tongariro National Park rising starkly from the surrounding plateau of tussock and near-desert. The three mountains, Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe that make up the National Park are all active volcanoes, and are popular in winter and summer. The stunningly blue fresh water of Lake Taupo awaits you. Before arriving at the hotel, you will stop in to view Huka Falls and you will pass the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station.

Stay: Hilton Hotel, Taupo (B, D)

Day 4
Taupo - Rotorua

There’s time to explore the township of Taupo, or perhaps try your hand at trout fishing before continuing to nearby Rotorua. Now it’s time to gain an insight into local Maori culture and history with our special Maori show and traditional Hangi, where you’ll experience the local customs like the Hongi greeting as well as learn some traditional words. This evening enjoy a traditional Maori Hangi dinner, a meal cooked in the ground using geothermal steam. See the Hangi pit and enjoy the unique flavours that the Maori have enjoyed for hundreds of years.

Stay: Princes Gate Hotel, Rotorua (2 nights) (B, D)

Day 5
Rotorua Sights

We’re off to see the multi-awardwinning and highly entertaining Agrodome Sheep Show. You’ll witness the art of sheep shearing, sheepdog demonstrations, cow milking, bottle feeding of lambs and even a sheep auction. Your next stop is Rainbow Springs Nature Park. Here you’ll discover native bush, ferns and trees that grow around the crystal clear mineral water springs. You might even spot a kiwi or two! To complete our day, we visit the Whakarewera Living Village for an insight into Maori life and how they interact with the geothermal activity. (B)

Day 6
Rotorua - Coromandel

We’ll make our way to the famous Waitomo Caves to visit Cave World, for an exclusive 5 star Eco Glow Worm experience. It’s just a short walk through breath-taking New Zealand native bush before your guide sets the scene for a cave experience, where you will see glow worms and cave formations and appreciate the beauty of Footwhistle Cave. Next stop is the dairy farming community of Matamata before a delicious lunch at Longlands Farm country-style restaurant. Now we’re off to the Coromandel Ranges to Puka Park Resort, where you’ll stay in Tree Hut Chalets, set among the native bush. Tonight it’s dinner at the resort.

Stay: Grand Mercure Puka Park Resort, Coromandel (B, D)

Day 7
Coromandel - Auckland

If you are an early riser, why not take a stroll down to the golden sands of Pauanui Beach and dip your toes in the swirling surf. From the Coromandel you’ll travel to New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland. Take an afternoon sightseeing tour and then the rest of the day is at leisure. Visit the Sky Tower for 360° views of the region and surrounding volcanic hills. Amble down Queen Street to the main shopping precinct or on to the Viaduct Harbour and the Auckland Waterfront region. This recently developed area of central Auckland has cafés and restaurants galore. Take a seat in the sunshine, enjoy a glass of one of New Zealand’s famous Sauvignon Blancs and watch the maritime activity on Waitemata Harbour.

Stay: Sofitel, Auckland (B)

Day 8
Auckland - Bay of Islands

Travel to Orewa and the scenic Hibiscus Coast, birthplace of Sir Edmund Hillary. We then continue to the Waipoua Forest, a sanctuary that is home to many native trees including the largest Kauri tree in existence, Tane Mahuta (over 2,000 years old). We’ll take a picnic break before a Maori guide walks you the history and legend behind the mighty Kauri. We’ll then head to our waterfront resort in the heart of the Bay of Islands and tonight it’s dinner at the resort.

Stay: Copthorne Hotel and Resort, Bay of Islands (2 nights) (B, D)

Day 9
Bay of Islands Sights

This morning you’ll take a ferry across the harbour to historic Russell, where a local guide will take you on a walking tour of the first European settlement and what was once the first capital of New Zealand. The rest of the day is at leisure. Perhaps head out on to the water on a dolphin watching cruise, and maybe even jump in the water for a swim with these magnificent creatures. Experience sailing aboard a historic tall ship, enjoy wine tasting around Kerikeri, or join a jet boat Heritage Cruise and learn a little more about the settling of the Bay of Islands. Tonight you are free to dine as you wish. You may want to experience a ‘Kiwi tradition’ – fish and chips on the beach, or glide down the Waitangi River on board the Ratanui for a sumptuous dinner cruise. Your Travel Director will assist you in booking all of your chosen optional experiences. (B)

Day 10
Bay of Islands - Auckland

You’re off to the Bay of Islands Maritime Park where you’ll take a cruise to the famous ”Hole in the Rock”, and see the historic Cape Brett lighthouse, as you explore some of the 144 islands in the bay. Later you’ll have some time in Paihia to check out the local craft shops, do a spot of shopping or go for a walk along the beachfront. This afternoon you will drive back through the small towns of Northland, over the Harbour Bridge and into Auckland city. Celebrate your last night together tonight at a farewell dinner.

Stay: Sofitel, Auckland (B, D)

A very good introduction to the North island, its people, culture and highlights. We enjoyed the variety of activities and the information given by our driver/guide. Craig, the driver/guide, was excellent and added greatly to the overall experience. We hadn't realised that the main body of the group had just completed a tour of the South Island and it would have been good to have met up with them all before setting off in the coach on our Day 1. Overall a very enjoyable experience. (Ed. For the 2014/15 season, the tour itinerary & accommodations have been revised)
