Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Auckland - Muriwai - Pakiri - Snells Beach

Your Guides will meet you at your Pre-Tour accommodation near Auckland Airport. It will be an early start as your first viewing of New Zealand bird life will begin from 6am onwards. Your guides will take you from Auckland to the rugged west coast along the black sand beaches of Muriwai. Then head north to Pakiri and ending in Snells Beach.

Target Species: Bar tailed godwit, red knot, Australasian shoveler, NZ scaup, grey teal, paradise shellduck, white faced heron, Australasian Gannets, White fronted tern, wrybill, banded dotterel, variable oyster catcher.

Meals: Picnic Lunch & Dinner at Warkworth Restaurant
Stay: Snells Beach Motor Camp (L,D)

Day 2
Snells Beach - Maungatautari

Snells Beach (formerly known as Long Beach) is a quiet and quaint coastal town within the northern Auckland city limits. Snells Beach is situtated on the Mahurangi Peninsula and gazes out to the picturesque Kawau Island. Today is our first Pelagic Birding Day.

Highlights: Pelagic Birding Day and a Kiwi Walk

Target Species: New Zealand Storm Petrel, White faced Storm Petrel, Cook’s, Pycroft’s, Grey-faced Black Petrels and Common Diving Petrel, Buller’s, Little, Flesh-footed and Fluttering Shearwaters, Fairy Prion, Blue Penguin, North Island Brown Kiwi

Meals: Light Continental Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner at “Out in the Styx”.

Day 3
Maungatautari - Pureora - National Park

Today we will make our way to the Pureora Forest Park. Here we will explore a magical world of tall trees, clear rivers and melodious birdlife. It is one of the largest intact tracts of native forest in the North Island and has high conservation value due to the variety of plant life and animal habitats available.

Target Species: Kaka, Hihi, NZ Robin, Tomtit, Kereru, Takahe, Saddleback, Fantail, Tui, grey warbler, bellbird, pukeko, Whio, Kaka, kokako, Red crowned kakariki, whitehead

Meals: Cooked Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner at “Chateau Tongariro”.

Day 4
National Park -Whirinaki - Rotorua

This morning we will make our way to the Whirinaki Te Pua a Tane Forest Park. As one of the world’s last prehistoric forests, with ancient trees, gushing rivers and unique wildlife, the park is home to many rare native birds and New Zealand’s only land mammals the shy long-tailed and short-tailed bats.

Target Species: Fernbird, Rifleman, Whio, Whitehead, New Zealand falcon, New Zealand dabchick, kaka, whitehead, Long-tailed cuckoo, Yellow Crowned Kakariki, grey warbler, Scaup, Little Black Shag, Little Shag, Black Shag, black billed gull, red billed gull

Meals: Cooked Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner at “Eat street” Rotorua.

Day 5
Rotorua - Ohope Beach

Today we will travel to the beautiful beautiful Ohope Beach and Ohiwa Harbour. Ohiwa Harbour is described as a birdwatching mecca, so remember to bring your binoculars and your bird book to assist with identifying all the species you’ll see.

Highlights: Ohiwa Harbour and Ohope Kiwi Reserve

Target Species: Kokako, Fernbird, Godwit, Variable Oystercatcher, Reef Heron, White faced Heron, Weka, banded rail, white fronted tern, NZ Dotterel, Pied Shag, North Island Brown Kiwi

Meals: Cooked Breakfast, fish and chips for lunch, restaurant for dinner.

Day 6
Ohope Beach - Rotorua - Wellington

Rotorua’s native forests are home to plenty of birds, most of them unique to New Zealand. Today we will be going on a day tour of Zealandia. Zealandia is an urban sanctuary where rare native species are flourishing in the wild. Immerse yourself in the unique and fragile natural environment and the ground-breaking conservation work which preserves it.

Highlights: Early flight from Rotorua to Wellington, Te Papa Museum, Day Tour of Zealandia and after dinner return back to experience Zealandia by Night.

Target Species: Stitchbird, North Island saddleback, takahe, whitehead, North Island robin, New Zealand falcon, kaka, pateke, little spotted kiwi

Meals: Cooked Breakfast, lunch on Cuba Street, dinner at hotel.

Day 7
Wellington - Christchurch

Leave Wellington behind as you board your early flight to Christchurch. Today we will visit braided rivers on our way to Arthur’s Pass. Explore the village, the incredible Otira Gorge and discover the unique flora and birds of this beautiful area, particularly the world’s only alpine parrot – the Kea.

Highlights: Early flight from Wellington to Christchurch, visit Braided Rivers and Arthur’s Pass.

Target Species: Brown creeper, banded dotterel, pied stilt, wrybill, kea, black fronted tern, South Island robin, tomtit, bellbird, New Zealand falcon, Australasian crested grebe

Day 8
Christchurch - Day trip to Kaikoura - Christchurch

Kaikoura, world famous for whales and dolphins, also provides a wonderful opportunity for viewing an impressive array of seabirds, including the mighty albatross.

Highlights: Day trip to Kaikoura. Your return back to Christchurch later this evening, will conclude your New Zealand Birding Adventure.

Target Species: Wandering albatross, antipodean albatross, gibson’s albatross, northern royal albatross, southern royal albatross, shearwaters, petrels, penguins, gannets, skuas, terns
