Queenstown Scenic Cruise | Walter Peak farm & BBQ Lunch

Queenstown Scenic Cruise | Walter Peak farm & BBQ Lunch

A return scenic cruise from Queenstown to Walter Peak High Country Farm on board the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw. Full bar services operate on board the TSS Earnslaw as it cruises to and from Walter Peak and in the Colonel’s Homestead.

Following the 40 minute cruise from Queenstown, disembark at Walter Peak for a BBQ lunch. The BBQ is cooked on the terrace in front of the Colonel’s Homestead overlooking Lake Wakatipu and is then served either on the terrace, or when the weather is not suitable, inside the Colonel’s Homestead.

Before or after the BBQ, visitors may wander amongst the farm animals (sheep, red deer, alpacas, Scottish Highland cattle) and join in the farmyard walking tour, which includes sheep dog handling and sheep shearing demonstrations.

There is also plenty of opportunity to relax in the lakeside gardens. Souvenir shopping is available at Walter Peak from the ‘Woolshed’ before boarding the TSS Earnslaw for the return cruise to Queenstown. Suitable for all ages.

The TSS Earnslaw will be on survey early June – mid July each year (subject to change). During this period a launch will be substituted for the TSS Earnslaw.

BBQ Lunch

Bread rolls, steamed fish served on rice with sweet chilli sauce, beef steaks, pork and parsley sausages, grilled lamb chops with mint sauce, honey ginger marinated pork spare ribs, grilled chicken drumsticks with honey and soy sauce, vegetarian special of the day, baked jacket potatoes, garden fresh salads, fresh fruit salad and cream, New Zealand cheese board, freshly brewed coffee and tea.

The BBQ is adapted to suit the differing nationalities by the Walter Peak chef, i.e. accompanying baked potatoes, Asian vegetables, noodles, or rice option (plus special condiments).

The Walter Peak Gourmet BBQ & Cruise was perfect, very welcoming staffs, great food and we had fun. We went on a rainy day so it was a pity that we did not have the chance to take better photos. Would recommend to others.

Lovely venue, gorgeous gardens and excellent BBQ lunch - perhaps more information at lunch regarding where the farm show is held. We wandered about not really sure where to go. Otherwise excellent. We would recommend to friends etc.

BBQ lunch was fantastic but schedule was too rushed. Did not have much time to explore the farm after lunch as we had to catch the return cruise ride back to Queenstown.

We were so disappointed with this tour, this was the one activity my grandchildren wanted to do the most from 18 tours we had organised for our trip (eg. The Cadbury chocolate tour, the glow worm cave tour, the gondola and luge and the Shotover jet boat ride to mention a few). We arrived to join a huge queue on the wharf at Queenstown and once on the steamboat could not get a seat after wandering around aimlessly. There were far too many people at the BBQ lunch and we were told we had to wait to be called up for the buffet. We had two starving children (7 & 9) and were one of the last tables to be called up. We tackled the crowds to feed the kids. Surely people with kids should be called up first. By the time we plated up, everything had been picked over and the kids had bearly a meal. After seeing to the kids I ventured up to find only the leftovers which looked most unappetising and the people that had been called up first were on their second round. After a traumatic lunch, we ventured onto the farm show which was so crowded my grandchildren couldn't see a thing as people continued to stand in front of them. I politely asked a few of them if they could let my grandkids see but they ignored me, so my Grandkids had to listen to the guy conducting the show without actually seeing what he was doing so they missed out on the sheep shearing which was the one thing they wanted to see. We couldn't wait to get back on the boat and get out of there and once again we battled the crowds for a seat. We ended up sitting outside at the back of the boat on what appeared to be the anchor ropes. For a much anticipated tour, it turned out to be our worst experience in NZ. With much regret.
