Te Anau Glowworm Caves Ex Queenstown

Te Anau Glowworm Caves Ex Queenstown

Return luxury coach transport from Queenstown to Te Anau before some free time in Te Anau. There is 4-5hrs (6:55am departure) or 1-2hrs (9:00am departure) of free time in Te Anau prior to the caves departure at 2pm.

Cruise across Lake Te Anau on board a modern catamaran Luminosa to Cavern House located on the western shores. This purpose built vessel has large outdoor viewing areas and a spacious cabin. The crew will share stories about the natural history and early pioneers of the region.

On arrival, join the specialist nature guide for your Te Anau Glowworm Caves experience. Above ground the nature guide will detail aspects of the caves and its various inhabitants in the visitor interpretation centre. Then below ground there is a twisting network of limestone passages filled with the whirlpools and waterfalls of the Tunnel Burn Stream. By geological standards, the caves are very young and are still being carved out by the force of this river that flows through them.

Follow the path deep underground before transferring into small boats to drift silently along the river below a display of the New Zealand glowworm; thousands of glowworms inhabit a silent hidden grotto.

Retrace your steps out of the caves and return to Te Anau by catamaran and to Queenstown by luxury coach.

Note: A reasonable agility level is necessary (some bending is required due to low caves entrance and steps are involved). Not suitable for wheelchair clients or heeled shoes. Suitable for passengers of all ages except infants.

Tour Reviews

The pacing of the tour was good. All the representatives of Relaxing Journeys are knowledgeable and helpful. Will definitely join another tour when my family and I are in New Zealand for future holidays.

Great excursion! I was really happy the lady in Te Anau let me go on an earlier visit to the caves. Otherwise I would have had to hang around in town for several hours and come back to Queenstown late. Guides at the caves were also really good!
Overall Tour Rating

Very well organized day trip. The cave is beautiful, and the presentation was detailed.

Good commentary by coach driver. Always kept informed of any developments by consultant, Toni Harris.

The tour was great with spectacular lake views, roaring underground streams and magical dark cave experience. The team was also excellent.

All was good and smooth. It was most enjoyable. It would have been even better if the wait from the time we got there and actually touring the caves was shorter. Had too much time on our hands. Cave tour was fantastic. Apart from the long wait, we enjoyed ourselves.
Overall Tour Rating

The glowworm cave guides were excellent. However, because we opted for a pickup from Queenstown, we had a four hour wait in Te Anau, which was far too much time to explore a small town. It might have been possible for a morning or noon tour to be arranged instead.
Overall Tour Rating

To start off, the coach drivers were very good. Their commentary along the way were very informative. The trip to the cave was very good. Again the guide was excellent. Unfortunately, we had to wait for half a day before we could join the tour. Of course, we could browse through the shops in Te Anau, but half a day in a small, quite sleepy town is way too long. Of course, we went to the animal sanctuary nearby. Probably, you could thrown in some other short sight-seeing trips nearby would make the wait more bearable. Those going to Te Anau must make a trip to the most expensive public toilet there. (one I've ever encountered!) $1 to pee...mmmm. Overall, it was a good trip. Keep up the good job!

Our group had a lovely time. The buses were very comfortable and the drivers were knowledgeable and friendly. The guides at the Caves were also very good.
Overall Tour Rating

Great informative tour. It was amazing to walk inside the caves and to see the torrents of water rushing by as well as the glow worms. The guides were very informative. Well worth seeing!
