Doubtful Sound Coach & Cruise Scenic Tour | Doubtful Sound Cruise (Coach - Wilderness Cruise - Coach)

Doubtful Sound Coach & Cruise Scenic Tour | Doubtful Sound Cruise (Coach - Wilderness Cruise - Coach)

On boarding a luxury coach in Queenstown, travel along the shores of Lake Wakatipu and through the rolling countryside to Manapouri. Then cruise across the crystal waters of Lake Manapouri to West Arm before boarding a coach and crossing the alpine route of Wilmot Pass through some of Fiordland and Doubtful Sound’s most dense rainforest.

On reaching Deep Cove, board a modern catamaran vessel, the Patea Explorer for a three hour cruise exploring the waterways of this serene and isolated fiord. There is plenty of time available to explore points of interest and view the spectacular alpine scenery including waterfalls, rainforest and mountains all the way out to the Tasman Sea. It is home to bottlenose dolphins and fur seals and when in season, the rare Fiordland crested penguin.

An on board nature guide with specialist knowledge of the region’s history, flora and fauna provides detailed interpretation in English with a roving microphone. On the return cruise, the vessel’s engines are turned off and visitors are treated to the ‘sound of silence’.

Complimentary tea and coffee are available on all vessels (Lunch must be pre-ordered when booking). Suitable for all ages.

The tour of the sound itself (from Manipouri) was very good, though would have been more enjoyable if visibility had been better. The commentary was very helpful and the right amount. The overall rating for the day is lower simply because it was a very long day. More transit than tour. I would not recommend doing this trip from Queenstown to others. I read the reviews before booking and others said that despite the length of the day it was still worth it, but I do not agree on that. Perhaps if we had seen more wildlife I would have had a different opinion. I expected this to be one of the top highlights of our NZ trip, but it was not. This is not a negative reflection on Real Journeys or the quality of the tour but more on myself for booking it. The countryside on the way to the first boat was quite pretty and the coach driver was very entertaining and provided informative information. I had tried to book the overnight cruise to Doubtful Sound but it was booked for the days we were going to be in that region; would recommend to others to do either that, or if doing the day cruise, secure overnight accommodation in or close to Manapouri the nights before and after the cruise to better enjoy it. Also, the lunch was overpriced and starch heavy. If I were to do it again, I would have brought my own.

This beats Milford Sound for all that the trip includes. The Sound was beautiful, as was the lake. Seeing dolphins was exciting. I would do this again, even though it was a long day.

We were blown away by the scenery and tranquility of the Sound which, had we not seen for ourselves, could never have believed the beauty and isolation by looking at photographs. We can close our eyes and still visualise the lapping of the water on the boats hull, the shrill of the birds overhead and sense the wilderness about you. Fantastic, thanks to all the team for a wonderful experience.

Your organisation was fantastic throughout but it was all a bit blighted by the weather which you could not control. We would recommend you though.

We really enjoyed this day-long tour. It's unique combination of coaches and ships going through lakes and forest as well as the fiord cruise allowed us to see the various terrain of the Fiordland wilderness. Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed this coach/cruise. Bus driver was great - funny and knowlegable. We were fortunate to have great weather and water was calm enough to get out to see the Tasman Sea. Very nice to also see penguins, seals and dolphins.

Our coach and boat trip to Doubtful Sound was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our stay in New Zealand. Of course the scenery was just spectacular, but on top of that, we were treated to top of the line coaches and boats, staffed by friendly helpful crews. The tour day, while quite long at 13 hours, was extremely well organized. I would encourage everyone not to miss this experience!

We had a great day at Doubtful Sound. It is a long day, but the excellent organisation, friendliness of the team and the information provided along the way made it a really enjoyable experience. A special mention for John, our coach driver, who is not only a good driver but a nice bloke too.

Had a lovely day on the Doubtful Sound day trip leaving from Queenstown. It was a full day and all the connections were very smooth throughout. We were lucky the weather was good. The scenery was amazing. If you are in this part of South Island this trip is well worth it.

I really enjoyed my journey to Doubtful Sound, the view, of course exceptionally breathtaking, the crews are all professional and very kind, the guide is very knowledgeable, but the best thing is our driver, John, thanks a lot John, you are the best driver and guide, you are very kind and give all the information we need, the tour became much more interesting because of you. Last but not least, thank you Relaxing Journeys and Real Journeys for the most fantastic tour to the most beautiful place, Doubtful Sound.

Stunning, Simply stunning! We had some 12 hours of simply stunning scenery! After the pick up from our Rydges hotel in Queenstown, we were driven by coach to lake Manapouri, where we boarded the ferry across the lake. After arrival, we were then taken on an escorted trip into the Hydroelectric Power station, which is largely underground & again simply stunning, in design, implementation & sheer size. Then, we were off on another coach to Doubtful Sound and after already having seen Milford Sound about 10 years ago, we were absolutely impressed by the grandeur of Doubtful Sound, it was stunning, as our many pictures will testify, for the rest of our lives! After spending hours on many parts of the sound and enjoying every second, we then retraced our trip back to Queenstown, fully satisfied by our full days trip and we would absolutely recommend it to anyone who loves lakes, Boat Cruises, Mountains, Coach Tours, Rivers, Waterfalls, Forests & scenery in general! Enjoy life, visit Doubtful Sound!

From the timely pickup at our hotel in Queenstown until our dropoff that evening, we encountered nothing but professional, courteous, and knowledgeable tour staff. Our three hours in the fjords of Doubtful Sound were intense and memorable, aided by a naturalist with a genuine curiosity and sensitivity and a boat with the comforts of sea! Will highly recommend to others. Wish we had been able to take the overnight tour, but space was unavailable.

My partner and I took my parents who were visiting NZ on the Doubtful Sound cruise (leaving and returning to Queenstown) and we all had a fantastic day! The scenery was breathtaking, and we all commented on how well the tour was organized, everything ran on time, and the tour operators were very professional. I will recommend this tour to all my friends visiting NZ.

The tour was everything we had hoped for and expected. It was a long day but the buses to and from Queenstown were comfortable and the narrative on the Doubtful Sound cruise was great. Of course Mother Nature is the star with such beautiful scenery, animals and trees, but the tour providers helped maximize the experience.

My wife and I really enjoyed the trip! Doubtfull Sound is one of the most beautiful sights we have ever seen! The only thing I would change is the trip to the power plant. After such a long day and seeing so much on the sound and the lake, it did not seem to fit, and just added another 45 minutes to the day. Also, nobody could hear the guide. Our only complaint was the speedy driving of Paul the driver. A lot of passengers were calling him Mario Andretti. He was pretty wild and then he hit a sign at a roundabout in Queenstown and had to call a cab to take those of us left on the bus to our drop off. He really needs to slow down.

Comfortable buses, and the bus, boat, bus and boat to Doubtful Sound a much better option that the bus to Milford Sound. The bus drivers and guide on the Sound were very knowledgable and interesting. The Sound is very beautiful, and we were lucky to have a very calm day and were able to get out into the Tasman Sea as well. The bird life was interesting and we saw the seals, the only thing missing was the dolphins and the penguins! The power station was more interesting than I expected and my husband really enjoyed it.

We had a wonderful day. The coaches were comfortable. The information given us by the drivers was useful and interesting. The mixture of time on the coaches and time on the boats was good. The pick up and drop off was appreciated and added to the smooth running of the day. The weather was beautiful although we do realise that you are not responsible for this! A fantastic day and a highlight of our time on the South Island.

We had a wonderful time on this cruise. It was raining (no surprise) but it didn't diminish the experience at all. Loved the fact that the seals and penguins co-operated and hung around for photos. The staff were all helpful and knowledgable and we had a particularly good time with the coach driver, John Lockie, who knows how to entertain.

It's a very great experience on the Doubtful Sound. I was puzzled when having to choose between Doubtful Sound & Milford sound. It's obvious the Milford Sound is more commercialized as the advisement was much more than Doubtful Sound when we realized after arrive NZ. But a local friend told us the Doubtful Sound is 9 times bigger than Milford and much more spectacular. So we stick to our plan without any regret. Indeed it's a great journey. Initially we book date was 18 Feb 10, but that day morning we got some emergency and have difficulty to get our rental car from Queenstown plus the weather was raining! I called and you changed the date to 19 Feb 10 without any question even we informed them less than 24 hours before departure. Our travel consultant named Craig always responds very prompt and patient even for some extra help for the car rental problem. Thanks for their wonderful service. In my next travel to New Zealand I will choose Relaxing Journeys again.
