Queenstown Guided Nature Walk | Famous Routeburn Track

Queenstown Guided Nature Walk | Famous Routeburn Track

Experience spectacular snow-capped mountain and lake views, a variety of bird life, beautiful natural ancient native beech forest - mosses, lichens & ferns - waterfalls and river gorge.

This full day walk in the ancient beech forest of the Mount Aspiring National Park starts with a scenic drive to the northern end of Lake Wakatipu and into the Routeburn Valley. A journey along the edge of the lake from Queenstown to the head of Lake Wakatipu is the ideal preparation for the splendor of the world-famous Routeburn Track.

Your walk begins among towering ancient beech forest, climbing gradually through an 130 million year old magical world, blanketed by forest mosses and ferns and skirting the thundering Routeburn through the gorge it has carved over the millennia.

The woodland eventually parts to reveal the rich grassland of Routeburn Flats, overlooked on all sides by cloud-scraping mountains, some so high they have permafrost and small glaciers. We enjoy our well earned lunch surrounded by the grandeur of alpine meadows, meandering streams and majestic snow capped mountains.

On our return we explore the old forgotten paths of the Maori, as we travel along the original Greenstone trails, finding new enchantment around each corner, where native birds abound.

The tour was great, the guide was very knowledgable and friendly. We got a lot of information about the fauna and rich flora of New Zealand. It was so nice to breathe in fresh air. The lenght of the walk was just right. It was really worth flying 24 hours to get to New Zealand, there is so much to see and people are friendly and helpful.
