Tour Itinerary

Imagine the thrill in standing on a dormant, giant volcano which last erupted 600 years ago. Rangitoto Island is a must do when in Auckland and a pleasant ferry journey on the 'City of Sails' harbour.

Board the city ferry for a 30 minute cruise across the Waitemata Harbour to Rangitoto Island. Upon arrival an island Ranger will greet you, and guide you to the unique 4WD road-train needed to cross the crunchy black rock, rugged lava crops and native bush on the eastern side. The lava fields contain big, black rock everywhere. Whilst on board, your Ranger will talk to you about the geology of the island.

Travel through New Zealand's largest Pohutukawa forest to the base of the summit, where it's a 10-15 minute walk along a scenic boardwalk to the top. Take in the panoramic views and marvel at being surrounded by 42 other dormant volcano islands in the scenic harbour.

Rejoin the 4WD vehicle for trip through a unique fern glen, along the western side of the island to the wharf for the return cruise home.

  • 5This was a terrific little tour! The ferry trip to and from the island was a great way to see the beautiful scenery around Auckland harbour. A short walk took us to a little 'train', which then took us up the volcanic mountain, where most of our party could walk up a set of boardway style steps to the summit, to see a stunning view of all the bay & islands around Auckland. Brilliant trip!

  • 4Having looked out on Rangitoto Island for the past nine years from where I live I decided it was time to actually visit it so chose to do your half day excursion which turned out to be a beautifully calm clear day so the views from the top of the 300 odd stepped though not too challenging boardwalk was a magnificent panoramic 'visual symphony' with the occasional viewing plarform enroute where one could 'catch one's breath' and take in the glimpses of the surroundings on the journey. The tractor train was an ideal means of transport for us (both 70 plus) especially too with our driver/guide who gave an informative and entertaining commentary on all aspects of Rangitoto - I have every confidence of recommending the adventure to all age groups!

  • 3The visit to the island and extinct volcano were very worthwhile. The tour consisted of riding in a trailer behind a tractor on fairly dusty very bumpy roads, while it was narrated we would have preferred to just visit thie island without the tour.

  • 4The ferry service was punctual, comfortable - well organised and staff were very helpful with boarding and disembarking. It would have been nice to know when the refreshment bar was closing, as we tried to buy a drink at the end of the trip, but staff were not available. The road train was great - the driver commentary was both interesting and information. There was plenty of time to walk to the summit and take (many, many) photos. All in all it was a very pleasant experience.

  • 4Our guide was excellent. Very personable and knowledgeable. Good sense of humor. Very supportive of me - I was in a walking boot & crutch and he was patient about my slow climb to the top and back down.

  • 5It was an excellent day out at Rangitoto Volcano - the tour operators had arranged a perfect sunny day! I went with my wife and 2 yr old daughter and we loved the whole experience starting form the ferry to the island approach, jumping on the train till the walk up to the crater and back. Thanks everyone for a great outing!

  • 4Volcano tour. Beautiful views. The tour guide had a wealth of interesting information. Found the ride after the climb to be a bit long however only one route around the island so that couldn't be helped. Before recommending this tour to anyone, I would suggest just taking the ferry ride and taking the walk to the top of the volcano from the wharf if the person was fit enough to do that.

  • 5Really comprehensive tour around the island and nice view from the summit. Tour guide was really friendly and knowledgable. Wished had more time though to explore the island further such as the lava caves. Maybe would come back to explore around the island again, maybe in summer instead.

  • 4Friendly efficient service even when we had to re-schedule our tour at last minute. Enjoyed both the boat ride and the land transport. Giude was pleasent and provided plenty of info during tour.

  • 4Really, no major comments. A bit of a rough day due to the weather and the storm the night before. Tour was great and the tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, although he did leave without me while I was in the bathroom. Good thing the other tour-goers were observant and were able to get him to stop. Thanks, good experience overall though.

  • 5We especially enjoyed this tour--wow--to walk on a recently dormant volcano! The guide was knowledgeable, professional and entertaining. The island is not only interesting but provides breathtaking views of surrounding islands and Auckland. The only minor suggestion I would have to instruct to tourists is to warn them that they will get a film of dust on them--on their clothes, in their hair and skin but more importantly--in their eyes--especially irritating to contact wearers. My daughter had to throw her pair away--they were clogged with dusts from the 4WD on volcanic rock. Other then that--wonderful time!

  • 4After having gone through the procedure to re-confirm this tour for some very strange reason when I went to the ferry terminal to get my tickets the lady told me that my tour had been cancelled. I was pretty shocked. She re-booked me because there was still a couple of seats available and said that the company would cover the cost of the re-booking. I have not received a refund on the initial booking and gratefully have not been charged for the second. The tour was very nice and we enjoyed that it was not too long. Although I had kind of expected I was going in a four wheel drive and not a little road train, but still pleasant. Some Tourists were disrespectful of the experience dropping their garbage and talking very loudly on the road train so that it was difficult to hear the commentary.
