Bay of Islands Sightseeing Coach Tour | Dune Rider 90 Mile Beach via Cape Reinga

Bay of Islands Sightseeing Coach Tour | Dune Rider 90 Mile Beach via Cape Reinga

This is an off road adventure to Cape Reinga via 90 Mile Beach, leaving Paihia in the Bay of Islands, with a wonderful commentary on historic and cultural features.

Travel to the morning tea stop at Coopers Beach cafe (own expense) on the beautiful east coast. A short drive onto Waiharara brings us to the Kauri Gum Diggers ancient forest. This forgotten and realistic experience, highlight the gum digging boom that lasted 150 years and helped found the culture and diversity of the Northland area.

Travel to the Aupouri Pine Forest with its herds of wild horses, to arrive on the famous Ninety Mile Beach*. Here the vehicle drives non stop through a stream of 'quick sand' (a mix of water & sand) up to its axils. On arrival at the sand hill base, if you dare, or have the energy, take an exhilarating toboggan down the giant sand dune.

Next destination is Cape Reinga with magnificent views of Te Werahi beach down to Cape Maria Van Dieman. Watch the swirling waters of the Tasman Sea and the mighty Pacific Ocean as the two currents converge. The lighthouse and the Spirit Tree are reminders of what a sacred place the very top tip of New Zealand is. Stop at Houhara, then journey on to Wanui and the Ancient Kauri Kingdom to see beautifully turned wood products from the delightful Kauri wood.

The Mangonui Fish Shop fame stems from the fresh fish caught, filleted and served on the premises. We stop for afternoon tea/dinner (own expense). Enjoy the freshest fish and chips as the sea washes gently beneath your feet. Finally it's back to Kerikeri and Paihia, via the Stone Store and Kemp House.

SO fun - bus was comfy, comfort breaks timely, guide was easy to hear, understand, had just enough sense of humor without trying to be a comic, and all this was surpassed by the great natural beauty of the places we saw. I had NO idea Cape Reinga would be so amazing. Just great

Lunch was very nice and it tasted very good. I was still hungry and wanted another plate. Another 10 minutes and more food would of been great. Overall the trip was awesome and I've recommend it to people.

Our tour guide was really nice and I enjoyed sliding down the sand dunes! He was very patient in teaching us and encouraged us to try sliding down from a high place. Cape Reinga was beautiful too and the view from the lighthouse was breathtaking. Seeing Northland is a must-do in New Zealand.

The Dunerider experience was an absolutely fantastic way to spend our Easter Sunday! Our truck driver and tour guide, Paul, was so knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about his country. We were three adults in our mid 20's, but the group was a real mix of ages from young adventurous types, to families there to enjoy the sights and the cultural side - proving that this experience is to suit everyone. The truck stopped pretty much every hour for a rest break and to take in points of interest, so it really was a worthwhile day and you did not feel bored of the travel one bit. Paul would often do a little commentary through the driving parts, so you constantly felt like you were taking something interesting in. For a whole day experience, I would definitely recommend this as a value for money activity to see that little bit more of the North Shore while you're staying at the Bay of Islands.

We had a really great day and the driver (Kevin, I think) was really informative and helpful. The only negative was that when I called to confirm the tour the lady told us to wait in the reception area of our motel to be collected in the morning, however, the driver had been waiting outside for us and was a bit concerned we had delayed the start of the tour!
