Auckland Cruise & Nature Tour | Tiritiri Matangi Island (Including Guided Walk)

Auckland Cruise & Nature Tour | Tiritiri Matangi Island (Including Guided Walk)

Voted “best day out” in January 2008 by NZ’s Metro Magazine, a day trip cruising from Auckland to Tiritiri Matangi Island is not to be missed.

Get up close and personal with one of the world's most successful conservation projects - Tiritiri Matangi Island. See some of New Zealand's most endangered birds and rare wildlife in this open sanctuary. Managed by the Department of Conservation in partnership with Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi, the 'open sanctuary' status allows the public to visit and enjoy this rare treat.

During the last 21 years almost half a million native trees have been planted allowing the re-introduction of 11 threatened native bird species. Guided walks provide expert commentary and lend context to both animal life and the historical and archaeological features of the island. Those with an interest in eco-tourism, indigenous history and early New Zealand will find this discovery of particular interest.

Walking tracks and look-out points offer spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf. Wildlife discovery is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Tiritiri Matangi Island is a wildlife sanctuary and it is vital that it remains pest-free. Before you depart on our vessel please check your bags for rodents and insects and ensure your footwear, clothing and bags are clean and free of seeds and/or seed material. Please ensure your lunch is packed in a rodent-proof container such as hard plastic or metal. If you have any doubts about your packed items or have any additional questions please ask our sales staff or boat crew.

The trip to the island and the guided walk was very good. The guide was extremely knowledgeable about the island, birds on the island and very good at spotting them. I loved how we had a choice if we wanted to do the shorter or longer route.

This was brilliant - quite a big tour, there were around 40 people on the way to Tiritiri. I was getting worried that it will be too crowded and that the children would scare off the wild birds. But we got split into small groups of 4-5 people, I had a lovely group of guys my age (late 20s) and we really enjoyed our time. The guides on the island are volunteers, clearly care about the cause and know a lot. You get 2 options - take a short or long route to the lighthouse with the guide. I would recommend taking the short route (1.5 hours) - the views are amazing and you do meet a lot of different birds on the way. You then get to the lighthouse, where there are complimentary teas and coffees to have with your packed lunch. The giftshop is quite nice too - lots of cute things to buy :) Don't worry, you will have plenty of time to take the long route back on your own - it's mostly downhill so won't exhaust you too much. Beautiful trees all the way and you can explore at your own pace. The long route back to the shore ends on a beautiful beach, overall the island offers countless opportunities for beautiful photos - birds are lovely and not scared of humans at all so will come and say hello :) We saw almost all the birds the island had to offer, missed out on kiwis but they tend to be active during the night anyway. Ferry is 75 mins long one way, but the views of neighbouring islands and Auckland will keep you entertained :) absolutely loved my day, worth the money for sure. The hike is not too exhausting so don't be put off by the 1.5 hour walk! Definitely would recommend to my friends and would love to go again if I have time while I'm in New Zealand!

For anyone interested in checking out some of New Zealand's rare birds, you will thoroughly enjoy your visit to Tiritiri Matangi Island. Welcomed at check-in and on board the ferry by friendly staff, who took particular care of everyone, when it was a little choppy when embarking for the journey back to Auckland. On the Island, we were greeted by the Conservation Department and the volunteer Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. The guided walk was led by one of the experienced volunteers - it was very informative and most important, we were not rushed, which allowed ample time to time to enjoy the birds as they presented themselves. A wonderful day and a great introduction to the birds of New Zealand.

Excellent day trip, I booked the guided tour as well which made the day a perfect blend of informative group tour and time on your own to explore. I was travelling abroad alone for the first time and this day tour looked after me perfectly. From the moment we boarded the boat we were kept well informed about what would be happening throughout the day. Our guided tours were in small groups, I was in a group of 6, so we had plenty of opportunity to stop, look at things and ask questions. We were given choices about which group type we wanted to join, long or short walk. Our guide had a great knowledge and real passion for the island, she told us how she had been involved in planting trees there a few years back. It was a fantastic day trip that I would recommend to anyone.

Had an awesome day. The island is absolutely beautiful. However I would advise those that are not into birds to give the guided tours a miss. The volunteer guides are amazing but are very very passionate about their birds. After two hours I had to respectfully depart my group. There are really good walking maps provided so if you are just into the scenery and history do your own walk. Otherwise a must see for everyone.
