Tour Itinerary

Voted “best day out” in January 2008 by NZ’s Metro Magazine, a day trip cruising from Auckland to Tiritiri Matangi Island is not to be missed.

Get up close and personal with one of the world's most successful conservation projects - Tiritiri Matangi Island. See some of New Zealand's most endangered birds and rare wildlife in this open sanctuary. Managed by the Department of Conservation in partnership with Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi, the 'open sanctuary' status allows the public to visit and enjoy this rare treat.

During the last 21 years almost half a million native trees have been planted allowing the re-introduction of 11 threatened native bird species. Guided walks provide expert commentary and lend context to both animal life and the historical and archaeological features of the island. Those with an interest in eco-tourism, indigenous history and early New Zealand will find this discovery of particular interest.

Walking tracks and look-out points offer spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf. Wildlife discovery is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Tiritiri Matangi Island is a wildlife sanctuary and it is vital that it remains pest-free. Before you depart on our vessel please check your bags for rodents and insects and ensure your footwear, clothing and bags are clean and free of seeds and/or seed material. Please ensure your lunch is packed in a rodent-proof container such as hard plastic or metal. If you have any doubts about your packed items or have any additional questions please ask our sales staff or boat crew.

  • 5For anyone interested in checking out some of New Zealand's rare birds, you will thoroughly enjoy your visit to Tiritiri Matangi Island. Welcomed at check-in and on board the ferry by friendly staff, who took particular care of everyone, when it was a little choppy when embarking for the journey back to Auckland. On the Island, we were greeted by the Conservation Department and the volunteer Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. The guided walk was led by one of the experienced volunteers - it was very informative and most important, we were not rushed, which allowed ample time to time to enjoy the birds as they presented themselves. A wonderful day and a great introduction to the birds of New Zealand.

  • 5Excellent day trip, I booked the guided tour as well which made the day a perfect blend of informative group tour and time on your own to explore. I was travelling abroad alone for the first time and this day tour looked after me perfectly. From the moment we boarded the boat we were kept well informed about what would be happening throughout the day. Our guided tours were in small groups, I was in a group of 6, so we had plenty of opportunity to stop, look at things and ask questions. We were given choices about which group type we wanted to join, long or short walk. Our guide had a great knowledge and real passion for the island, she told us how she had been involved in planting trees there a few years back. It was a fantastic day trip that I would recommend to anyone.

  • 4Had an awesome day. The island is absolutely beautiful. However I would advise those that are not into birds to give the guided tours a miss. The volunteer guides are amazing but are very very passionate about their birds. After two hours I had to respectfully depart my group. There are really good walking maps provided so if you are just into the scenery and history do your own walk. Otherwise a must see for everyone.

  • 4Very informative! This was our first activity upon arriving in New Zealand and we all enjoyed the hike and narrative from our guide, Mikey. It was a beautiful day to learn about the birds, plants and history of the island. We were sorry that we didn't have time in our schedule to actual stay overnight on the island and enjoy it longer. Great tour!

  • 5This tour was a great way to see the natural beauty of Auckland. Our guide was great and informative about all of the bird species on the island and we got some of the best photos from on top of the island. I would recommend this tour as a must to anyone visiting in the area.

  • 5I can't praise this day out highly enough. The ferry ride was perfect, as, luckily was the weather! The way we were organised into suitable sized groups was very professional. Our guide, Alison I think, was very knowledgeable. I liked the idea of feeding and watering stations - they certainly worked! I loved it so much I almost missed the return ferry! Perhaps the ferry could go there earlier and leave later!

  • 5We had a very positive experience. We were two of a group of five birders from the USA who were starting a birding tour the following day. We had hoped to get good views of some of the specialty birds of Tiritiri. We were not disappointed. Our guide was Simon and fortunately for us he was very bird oriented. He gave clear descriptions of the island and took us to good birding spots for some of the specialty birds. We saw several species that we did not see anywhere else in NZ. These were Stitchbird, Australian Brown Quail and North Island Kokako - all life birds for us. I think the success that we had was directly due to the expertise of Simon. The tour was well run in all other aspects as well.

  • 4We enjoyed the tour in spite of the wet conditions. We chose this excursion because of our interest in the NZ birds and we were pleased with what we were able to see. Our volunteer guide on the day was enthusiastic and interesting. We would recommend this tour to others with similar interests to ourselves.

  • 4This was my favorite place, it just shows what a dream and dedicatation can do to restore what man destroyed. I cant believe the transformation of this island in such a short time, being the re-vegetation and helping the survival of animal species. The volunteers that helped shape this island are truly remarkable. This is a must see, so add it to your itinerary when visiting Auckland.
