Tour Itinerary

Experience Coromandel Peninsula, a favourite holiday destination for many New Zealanders. Its amazing landscape consists of a mountainous, forest-covered backbone, with the Pacific Ocean on the east, and the sheltered bays of the Hauraki Gulf on the west. Spend the day in this unique area steeped in history associated with kauri logging and gold mining and stunning coastlines.

A 90-minute drive south-east of Auckland is Coromandel’s main town, Thames, where you take a short break. Then the spectacular western coast road leads us to Coromandel township where renowned New Zealand potter, Barry Brickell has his studio. Ride his own designed and built mountain railway system on a memorable journey through the rugged landscape. Your next stop is for a quiet stroll in the pristine rainforest to view some of the magnificent kauri trees which once covered the Coromandel Peninsula. The journey continues across the mountain divide and descends towards the east coast beaches where you stop for lunch. Visit Hot Water Beach with its hot spring in the middle of the beach. Take a dip if you wish!

A short drive away is Cathedral Cove, where the Pacific Ocean washes through a natural arch onto a white sandy beach backed by white cliffs. There is a good half hour downhill walk to the beach from here which means of course the walk back is uphill! Our journey home to Auckland heads back over the hills by a different route.

  • 5Great tour all around, while we didn't get to spend as much time at the Hot Spring beach, the extra time at Cathedral Cove was worth it. Tour didn't feel to rushed for the most part, but an extra hour to the day overall would've made it outstanding. Overall, it was still an excellent trip.

  • 5Great tour though a long day with a lot of driving. We had a private tour as no one else was booked for the day. Highlights of course were Cathedral Cove and Hotwater Beach - not to be missed! Dion our tour guide was very knowledgeable, accommodating, and humorous. Great lunch also.

  • 5We came on a short trip to New Zealand and found the Coromandel Day Tour online. The tour was GREAT especially for those on limited time!! There was surprisingly only 2 of us...so we had the whole van to ourselves....the guide was very flexible in terms of timing. We certainly enjoyed Cathedral Cove a lot and would love to be back! Thanks to Relaxing Journeys! :)

  • 5Well worth the money. The driver /guide was knowledgeable, interesting and helpful. The hot water beach was one of the most amazing things I have experienced lying in extremely hot water on a beach. The walk to and from Cathedral Cove was well worth it for the views. The little train with all the switchbacks and tunnels again a highlight and the view from the top is great.

  • 4Love Hot Water Beach. Soaking our feet in the hot water relieved our aching calves after days of walking prior to the tour. The downhill and uphill walk to Cathedral Cove was very scenic. The ride on Barry Brickwell's own designed and built mountain railway system was indeed a memorable journey for us. Unique. We will recommend this tour to our friends.

  • 5Our Coromandel Tour was terrific. There were only 2 people on the tour so we got a very personal tour and the driver from the company was awesome (Wayne). He told us so many fascinating facts and made sure we had a great time. The weather could not have been better and the lunch was great! Also my pictures turned out amazing and peoples jaws were dropping when they saw them! Would definitely recommend this to others!

  • 3We loved Hot Spring Beach as it is certainly one of its kind. Thank goodness it was low tide when we went. Your tour operator was very thoughtful to provide us with a shovel to dig the sand & a towel to remove sand from our feet. We also loved the long coastal drive. The sea is just beside the road! We could hear the gentle lapping waves as we headed back to Auckland. No way can we find this in Singapore. Although we decicded not to go down all the way to get a better view of Cathedral Cove as the climb back will be very steep, we were happy that Kevin gave us another option of a walk by the beach. But it turned out to be no walk. It was more like a quick return to get to his van. As a result, I could not fully enjoy the scenery & collect seashells. This is what girls do right? We loved too, the 2 cafes that your tour operator brought us to. They served delicious food & we are still salivating at the thought of it. Oops! However, we did not like it when Kevin showed signs of impatience when he brought us to see a Kauri tree. Perhaps we asked more questions than he expected & he was tired from all the driving, but we sure wished we did not have to see it. Overall, we think we had a positive impressio.

  • 5All three of us thoroughly enjoyed our day out in the Coromandel. You tour covers a lot in a short space of time and has made me want to go back to the Coromandel again in the future.
