Day by Day Tour Itinerary
From Auckland travel south to the Waitomo Caves for a guided tour. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must see and for 120 years they have attracted millions of people from all over the world. The moment you enter this subterranean wonderland you’ll discover an ancient underground labyrinth of limestone caves and grottos. You’ll experience a silent yet magical boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto – a subterranean cavern lit up by the lights of thousands of tiny glowworms.
After your tour continue on to Rotorua and check in at the Sudima Hotel Lake Rotorua.
As the evening settles in and the stars brighten the sky, you’ll be treated to a Maori cultural experience including dinner. Visit a Maori village, set in the forest, where you will be taken back to an era before the arrival of the European.
Experience a traditional formal welcome ceremony and learn about various art forms, traditions and Maori ways of life as you explore the village. Enjoy a powerful cultural performance of song and dance. Join your hosts for a relaxed 3 course dinner featuring the traditional hangi, that has been steaming under the earth on hot rocks, for a number of hours ready for your arrival. As well as hangi, you will enjoy Maori bread, fresh salads and seafood, mouth-watering desserts and a range of other delicious dishes.
Half day morning sightseeing tour of Rotorua including Te Puia, the Agrodome and Rainbow Springs. The city of Rotorua sits squarely on the Pacific Ring of Fire, so there’s evidence of volcanic activity everywhere you look. Explore the geothermal areas and discover the unique culture of New Zealand’s Maori people.
At Te Puia, experience the raw power of Te Whakarewarewa geothermal valley with bubbling mud pools, steaming vents and the world famous Pohutu Geyser. Take a journey into the heart of Maori culture, arts and crafts. Learn about the stories and traditions of this valley as well as its people. Explore Rainbow Springs Nature Park, which showcases native flora and fauna as well as the New Zealand Kiwi. Then see New Zealand’s agricultural industry in action with a sheep shearing display and sheep dog trials at the Agrodome.
This afternoon travel to Hobbiton and enjoy a guided tour. Experience the real Middle-earth with a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set, the bucolic setting for The Shire that featured in the Peter Jackson directed films, The Lord of the Rings. Drive through the picturesque 1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges.
Your guide will escort you through the ten acre site recounting fascinating details of how the Hobbiton set was created. The Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, Mill and other structures created for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films can be viewed and you will see how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle-earth.
This morning you will join a tour to Wai-O-Tapu, a wonderland of thermal activity 20 minutes south of Rotorua. Walk at your own pace and marvel at the reserve’s unique features that include the world famous Champagne Pool, geysers, bubbling mud, steaming ground, expansive vistas, huge volcanic craters as well as sinter terrace formations. At 10.15am each day there is the opportunity to learn about the history and mechanics of the Lady Knox Geyser as it erupts to heights of 10 to 20 metres.
Later in the afternoon return to Auckland by coach.
