The Routeburn is one of New Zealand’s great walks. Located in the Mount Aspiring National Park, it is a gradual ascent through beech forest, ferns, mosses & lichens. Your day walk commences with a journey to the head of Lake Wakatipu. Your guide will introduce you to the history and landscape of the region. Just beyond the charming hamlet of Glenorchy, the road crosses the blue ribbons of the Rees and Dart Rivers to reach the dense verdant belt of the Routeburn Valley.

Your trek begins among towering ancient beech, climbing gradually through blankets of forest moss and fern and skirting the thundering Routeburn River through the gorge it has carved over the millennia. Just 2½ hours walk later, the woodlands part to reveal the rich grassland of the Routeburn Flats, overlooked on all sides by cloud-scraping mountains. The Flats is a pristine site to stop for a delicious Kiwi style picnic lunch. Later you enjoy the valley in reverse, exploring the old paths of the Maori travellers as we travel along their old ‘Greenstone’ trails. Native and migratory birds welcome your return to the forest and a plentiful array of species will accompany your journey back to civilization. Due to the nature of the terrain, altitude and alpine conditions, the duration of this walk is entirely flexible and dependent on fitness levels will be anything from a 16km to 23km return journey.

The ‘Lakeshore Forest & Bird’ guided walk is a unique nature interpretative experience taken at a leisurely pace through native beech forest. The track leads down to the edge of Lake Wakatipu and great views can be had looking out through the trees and over the water to the mountains beyond. The track is good but uneven and winds around the lake shore with the option of a steeper climb to a lookout with magnificent views in all directions. Native birds are readily seen & heard & your guide will introduce you to an array of edible & medicinal plants used by Maori & European settlers on this fun half day walk.

Queenstown is widely regarded as New Zealand’s premier holiday destination. This magnificent alpine resort offers a wide variety of adventure and leisure activities from extreme to relaxed exploration. It is also a great base from which to explore the Fiordland National Park, gateway to the famous Milford & Doubtful Sounds. Local activities include jetboating, white water rafting, bungy-jumping, flying foxes, wine tours, 4WD adventures, scenic flights, golfing, skiing, fishing plus much, much more. We hope you decide to extend your stay so you can enjoy some these fantastic excursions.
