Day by Day Tour Itinerary
Kia Ora. Welcome to Queenstown – a walking, bungee and hiking paradise. After making your way through the terminal, through customs and baggage collection, make your way to the Hotel St. Moritz.
The rest of the day is yours to harness – what will you do first? This magnificent alpine resort town offers a wide variety of adventure and leisure activities from extreme to relaxed exploration. It is also a great base from which to explore the Fiordland National Park, gateway to the famous Milford and Doubtful Sounds.
Local activities include jet boating, white water rafting, bungy jumping, flying foxes, wine tours, 4WD adventures, scenic flights, golfing, skiing, fishing plus much, much more.
Enjoy a full day guided walk into the world famous Routeburn Valley. The Routeburn is one of New Zealand’s great walks. Located in the Mount Aspiring National Park, it is a gradual ascent through beech forest, ferns, mosses and lichens.
Your day walk commences with a journey to the head of Lake Wakatipu where your guide will introduce you to the history and landscape of the region. Just beyond the charming hamlet of Glenorchy, the road crosses the blue ribbons of the Rees and Dart Rivers to reach the dense verdant belt of the Routeburn Valley.
Here your trek begins among towering ancient beech, climbing gradually through blankets of forest moss, fern and skirting the thundering Routeburn River through the gorge it has carved over the millennia. After walking for just 2½ hours, the woodlands part to reveal the rich grassland of the Routeburn Flats, overlooked on all sides by cloud-scraping mountains.
The Flats is a pristine site to stop for a delicious Kiwi style picnic lunch. Later you’ll enjoy the valley in reverse, exploring the old paths of the Maori travellers as you travel along their old ‘Greenstone’ trails. Native and migratory birds welcome your return to the forest and a plentiful array of species will accompany your journey back to civilisation.
Due to the nature of the terrain, altitude and alpine conditions, the duration of this walk is entirely flexible and dependent on fitness levels will be anything from a 16km to 23km return journey.
The ‘Lakeshore Forest and Bird’ guided walk is a unique nature interpretative experience taken at a leisurely pace through native beech forest. The track leads down to the edge of Lake Wakatipu and great views can be had looking out through the trees as well as over the water to the mountains beyond.
The track is good but uneven and winds around the lake shore with the option of a steeper climb to a lookout with magnificent views in all directions. Native birds are readily seen or heard, so keep a look out. Your guide will introduce you to an array of edible as well as medicinal plants used by Maori along with European settlers on this fun half day walk.
Free time for some last minute sightseeing before making your way to Queenstown airport to depart for your next destination.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
You won’t pay more by booking your short break holiday with Relaxing Journeys. We have access to discounted industry rates and special deals, only available to those in the travel trade. So the amount we make on each short break, is the difference between these rates and retail rates that you would pay if you booked it all yourself. Of course, you also get peace of mind that all is organised professionally and you get our fantastic service thrown in! There will be occasions where a property may release a ‘walk in’ deal that may better our quote, however our prices are the best available at the time of booking.
Your dedicated tour consultant will email you through a quote. If it looks good, then full payment is required to confirm the booking (within 45 days) or a deposit of $100 per person is required outside this period. This must be paid by credit card (Visa or Mastercard only). We do not charge credit card fees on our short break packages. If the properties listed in the holiday package are unavailable at this time, we will provide you with alternatives until you are happy.
We welcome bookings from anywhere in the world. You can see how much each package is using our currency converter on this page. Only the New Zealand Dollar (NZ$) prices on this site are accurate. Your credit card company will convert the amount paid from your currency into NZD automatically for you.
Some short break packages do not include (or may not require) a hire car, or internal flights. Relaxing Journeys can organise these extras for you and include them in your quote if you wish – or you can just book the short break ‘as is’, and organise everything else yourself. These extras can be requested after choosing your date and clicking ‘Confirm Availability’ on the right of this page.
The cost of getting to & from the airport to your accommodation is generally not included, although on some occasions it is, in which case we have specifcally mentioned it in the itinerary. There are always plenty of taxis or shuttles waiting at the airport. You also have the option in most cases to catch a bus into the city centres.
Once your deposit has been paid and you have received your deposit confirmation, we will organise your short break and when completed (normally within 48 hours) we will email you confirmation. When you pay your balance (45 days before the start date) we will email you a ‘Short Break Voucher’ shortly after along with your arrival information and everything else you need. Print this off and take it with you to NZ.
Your deposit is non-refundable.
