Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Nelson - Motueka

On arrival, please collect your rental car and make your way to the town of Motueka, approx 50kms from Nelson city. The rest of today is at leisure to enjoy the local sights.

Day 2
Motueka - Abel Tasman National Park - Collingwood

Explore the Abel Tasman National Park before continuing on to Collingwood, a 1½- hour drive away.

With so many options, what will you do first? You have plenty of options when it comes to kayaking in Abel Tasman, including self-guided as well as a mix of kayaking and hiking in day tours.

Another awesome way to explore the Abel Tasman National Park coast is by boat. There are many operators taking you out on the waters, from sailing charters to eco tours getting you into the thick of the nature in the Abel Tasman National Park. They’ll take you to their favourite beaches, check out some local wildlife and more!

For the more adventurous you can skydive! Spectacular views of the Abel Tasman National Park from above as you hurtle toward the ground at 200km/h, try skydiving in Abel Tasman. A drop zone is based in Motueka where you can choose to fall from 9,000ft, 13,000ft and even 16,500ft.

Day 3
Farewell Spit

Enjoy a full day eco-tour of Farewell Spit nature reserve, a bird sanctuary and wetlands area of international importance where access is tightly controlled by the Department of Conservation.

Your first stop will be Fossil Point, an area where old fossilised shells and worm casts expose themselves from the mudstone cliffs and sea life abounds in the nearby rock pools. It is a popular hauling out place for New Zealand fur seals.

Further along the ocean beach is the lighthouse reserve where you visit the century old lighthouse-keepers cottage, climb the lighthouse itself and hear some of the Maori legends and myths of the area.

There are stunning views of the Tasman coastline and there is the opportunity to climb the sand dune at Mullet Channel for panoramic views of the intertidal plain and the parade of dunes along the centre of the spit. Visit Cape Farewell, the northernmost point of the South Island and the cliff-top views nearby are spectacular.

Your guide is passionate about the history and ecology of Farewell Spit and is committed to ensuring you get the most from your trip. You’ll hear the history of Puponga and New Zealand’s first Radar Station, see where whales strand and uncover the mystery of the migrant waders. Be sure to bring your camera and binoculars to make the most of this nature-lover’s paradise.

Day 4
Collingwood - Nelson

Drive back along the coast to Nelson where you return your rental car and depart for your next destination.
