4 Day South Island Nature & Whale Cruises

4 Day South Island Nature & Whale Cruises

Enjoy the luxury of the George Hotel and take in the wildlife of Kaikoura and Akaroa with small group privately guided tours.

Christchurch is New Zealand’s second-largest city and the gateway to the South Island. Bordered by hills and the Pacific Ocean, it is situated on the edge of the Canterbury Plains that stretch to the Southern Alps.

The George, a luxury boutique hotel, epitomises supreme comfort and is renowned for offering a personalised stay and attentive staff. Located in the heart of Christchurch overlooking the picturesque Hagley Park and river Avon, you will find peaceful Christchurch accommodation just steps from the cultural precinct and key attractions. Impeccable service in an intimate ambience is guaranteed at The George, the only Christchurch Hotel with a one-to-one staff to guest ratio.

Travel to Akaroa, over the beautiful Banks Peninsula on a high summit route which gives glorious views of farmlands, Akaroa Harbour, the Canterbury Plains and the distant Southern Alps as well as remote bays indenting the coastline. You have an opportunity to wander around the charming 150 year old French harbour side village of Akaroa with it’s museum of settlers’ history, art and craft shops and studios before enjoying lunch at an award winning cafe. Join the Eco-marine Nature & Harbour cruise on the Akaroa Harbour. Your cruise is packed with highlights including the rare, NZ native dolphin – the Hector’s Dolphin, as well as penguins and other sea birds. And you’ll see giant volcanic sea cliffs and hear about Akaroa’s fascinating past. Each cruise is fully narrated by your skipper who has extensive knowledge of the nature, wildlife and history of the harbour. On the journey back we visit the Cheese Factory at Barry’s Bay, the only one remaining on the peninsula from a bygone era.

After departing Christchurch you travel through the beautiful rural pastoral scenes of North Canterbury to Kaikoura where the mountains meet the sea. Kaikoura is world renowned for the variety of marine mammals which can be seen, not least of all the giant sperm whales and the acrobatic Dusky Dolphins. On your arrival in Kaikoura you will be transferred to your whale watch tour. Look for majestic Sperm Whales and Dusky Dolphins. Other sightings might include Southern Right, Humpback and Pilot whales. Enjoy a cafe lunch and drive to a lookout with spectacular views of the peninsula and the Pacific Ocean. Visit a seal colony where fur seals may be viewed at close quarters. Experience some local wines at either a Kaikoura or Waipara Winery.
