Day by Day Tour Itinerary
“Haere Mai” Welcome to Christchurch – the Garden City. Upon arrival at Christchurch airport, you will be personally met by our representative and transferred in an executive sedan to your accommodation.
Following the 2011 earthquake, Christchurch has re-emerged as a vibrant, ever-changing city. The remainder of the day is at leisure to get a taste of what the city has to offer.
This morning you will be transferred to Christchurch Railway station for your train journey on the TranzAlpine train. The TranzAlpine is described as “The Great New Zealand Rail Adventure” and is rated as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world.
After crossing the huge and fertile patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, the TranzAlpine winds its way over massive viaducts, through spectacular river gorges and the stunning Waimakariri River valley. It tracks its way up and across the spectacular Southern Alps via the alpine village of Arthur’s Pass situated 737 metres above sea level.
Here you disembark the train and transfer by resort vehicle to Wilderness Lodge, a 3000 ha nature reserve as well as Merino sheep farm surrounded by the mountains of Arthur’s Pass National Park. (2 nights) (D)
Discover wild nature in the New Zealand mountains. Walk from your room into a natural paradise of beech forest, tussock clearings, moss-lined streams and lakes on a network of nature walks.
The highlight of the lodge is a daily programme of nature discovery activities and the lodge’s naturalist guides will help you explore nature and learn about high country life. (D)
After a leisurely breakfast, you will be driven back to the village of Arthur’s Pass to rejoin the TranzAlpine to complete your coast to coast rail journey. On arrival at Greymouth, collect your rental car.
Just 25 miles south is the village of Hokitika with its many attractions including an historical museum, greenstone factories, a gold mine, gold panning and a glowworm dell.
Continue the drive along the dramatic West Coast, steeped in history dating back to the gold rush era of the 1800’s, to the glacier townships of Fox and Franz Josef. Weather permitting, optional scenic flights over the region are available and are highly recommended. (You may also wish to add an extra day to your itinerary at this point, if you are interested in a guided glacier walk or heli-hike).
Journey south to your next overnight stay, the Wilderness Lodge, Lake Moeraki. Few places on earth can match the unique setting of the lodge, located in the heart of the 2.7million hectare South West New Zealand World Heritage area. The lodge is situated in a lakeside clearing surrounded by 1000 year old trees. (2 nights) (D)
Spectacular beaches, pristine lakes and untouched ancient rainforests provide a paradise for nature lovers. Make sure to include walk on Moeraki Beach, stopping to view its mysterious, spherical, 60 million year old boulders.
You’ll be given maps and information on the network of walks, forest as well as seacoast trails and canoeing activities available. (D)
Today, view incredible scenery as you travel past the untouched native forests and pristine lakes of the World Heritage Westland National Park and Haast Pass. At Makarora, begin a unique 4 hour wilderness adventure, the Siberia Experience, in the Mt Aspiring National Park.
Your journey begins with a 25 minute flight that captures stunning views of the Southern Alps, vast rainforests, hanging valleys and dramatic unspoiled beauty. Land in the Siberia Valley to immerse yourself in nature on this unguided journey amongst natural New Zealand World Heritage wilderness before boarding your jetboat for a thrilling 30-minutes trip back to Makarora.
At the conclusion of this amazing experience, a short drive brings you to the stunning lakeside resort town of Wanaka. (2 nights)
A day to catch your breath, relax, unwind and enjoy the alpine surroundings of Lake Wanaka before your next big adventure!
Perfect for jetboaters, sailors and kayakers Lake Wanaka is the most tranquilly set of the South Island lakes, nestled below towering mountains. There are activities for nearly every taste and include fishing, hiking, canyoning, climbing and skydiving.
Or you could visit the nearby towns of Queenstown, Cromwell and Alexandra, go shopping, or simply sit in a café and watch the world pass by.
Just a short drive today through the historic goldfields of Central Otago to Queenstown, a beautiful alpine resort twon and regarded as one of New Zealand’s premier holiday destinations. (3 nights)
The Skippers Canyon road was hacked by hand into the sheer cliffs of the Shotover River following the discovery of gold in the Queenstown area in 1862. You’ll follow every hairpin bend of the Skippers Road and cross the historic suspension bridge opened in 1901 to reach the old gold mining village of Skippers.
This tour offers spectacular mountain scenery, rugged canyons, gold panning in the second richest gold river in the world and the excitement of a real 4WD adventure. At the completion of your trip, the rest of today is free for further sightseeing.
Enjoy a full day to experience this magnificent resort. Surrounded by majestic mountains, Queenstown boasts adventure activities in all forms, from extreme to relaxed exploration.
Here you can take a thrilling jet boat ride, experience the Ultimate bungy jump, pan for gold, raft the white water rapids, take a wine trail, fish for trout, play golf – your options are endless.
Today, travel through the rugged and beautiful landscape of Otago. Cross the Lindis Pass into the Mackenzie Country to arrive at Mt Cook National Park a World Heritage listed site. Mt Cook is Australasia’s highest mountain at 3764 metres.
The park covers over 70,000 hectares of breathtaking alpine scenery and is also home to the Tasman Glacier, the longest in the Southern hemisphere (optional Ski-plane and helicopter flights are available subject to weather conditions).
Before leaving Mt Cook National Park, be sure to stop and view the tiny Church of the Good Shepherd, built on the lake’s edge of local stone and oak in 1935. Leaving the High Country, cross the vast Canterbury Plains to the ‘Garden City’ of Christchurch.
At leisure today until you return your rental car to the airport in time to connect with your onward flight.
