We really enjoyed our trip to South Island. Marie has been most helpful in sorting out all our accommodations and answering all our questions. The voucher system works really well and makes the transactions simple and quick. There were a few long drives for the itinerary we chose - from Franz Josef to Queenstown and from Lake Tekapo to Hanmer Springs, about 5 hours each. Other than those, the pace was very manageable. The accommodations provided were all clean and comfortable. Noting the number of toilets in each apartment may be helpful especially when six people share an apartment. Due to our large group size (17), some of us had to be accommodated in some smaller twin/triple rooms at some destinations instead of more spacious apartments. Overall, the accommodations were of excellent quality. The highlight of our trip was seeing lots of wild dolphins and whales on our trip out to sea at Kaikoura. However, the sea conditions were really rough and some in our group had to forgo the whale-watching trip. The tour operator was helpful to allow us to reschedule our whale-watching to the next day without penalty and to allow cancellation for those who suffered from sea-sickness. As SH1 was still closed, we had to take the windy inland route to Kaikoura but the experience of seeing so much wild life at Kaikoura made the drive worth the while.

The choice for the accommodation was excellent, with the exception of Lake Tekapo Lodge. The driving instructions and ease of organising activities was excellent as well. The lower rating I have provided comes from the inclusion of three 5 hour drives during the trip. These were quite long and tiring, which meant by the time we go to our destination we did not feel we had enough time to relax.

Having it all planned allowed us to just show up and enjoy! This is an incredible country that you must see. The South Island is best viewed by car so a driving tour allows you to experience this diverse and beautiful country. I loved the independence to see only what we wanted. The Kruse system commentary was entertaining but lacked detail about where to go an what to see.

We had a great time. Terrific weather, no hassles, great fun. The only negative really was the Peppers Resort at Lake Tekapo. They got the bedding configuration wrong, which was no big deal - it's a busy time of year - but they were stroppy when we asked if they could change it - the man at reception said, 'That's your agent's fault, it's not our problem.' We didn't ask to change rooms, just for housekeeping to come when they had a chance and reconfigure the twin beds into a Queen. In the end, they did, but I felt bad for asking. The room itself was modern but poorly equipped - one tiny pot and only three forks. And the buffet breakfast was horrible - watery eggs, no fresh fruit (in Otago!), flabby bacon and sliced supermarket bread. Sally said it was a bit like school camp! The hotel was packed with coach loads of tourists and we felt a bit ... processed? Perhaps we felt that way because our experiences in Christchurch, Franz Josef and Queenstown had all been excellent. Our agent Toni was terrific from go to whoa. Especially after things got a little crazy after the earthquakes took Kaikoura off the itinerary. Akaroa was a brilliant alternative. We had a fantastic time there and really appreciated the great location of the apartment we had there - especially at such short notice. The operators Toni recommended in Akaroa and Franz Josef were brilliant too. The Queenstown BBQ lunch cruise on the TSS Earnslaw was great but possibly a little 'touristy' (for us) but it is what it is and the meal, as Toni had promised was excellent and the day was well spent! The car, notes, itinerary and everything else was great and although I'm sure there are cheaper ways to see NZ by road this was brilliant for us. 2016 was frantic for our family with work and school and we just didn't have the time to research, plot and plan every detail of an NZ tour. Having Toni sort everything meant we could just 'show up' and enjoy our holiday.

We had an excellent self drive family trip overseen by Marie who made sure everything went smoothly and accommodated all our requests like adding and removing places in the itinerary. The standard of B&B's and hotels booked were high and we enjoyed all the accommodation choices. Car rental was easy and the intermediate car option she advised was great and spacious. Thank you Relaxing Journeys, it was truly relaxing!

Very smartly chosen itinerary and accommodation. The timing of visiting specific places made a lot of sense in terms of getting the best out of them. For example, we very much appreciated having the TranzAlpine ride the day after we arrived, which gave us adequate time to shake jet lag off. I could go on and on, but the gist is we felt the package was more than simply a number of must-do destinations, with particular attention to pacing. The accommodation was superbly chosen and we were very satisfied with both the premises and the people we interacted with. Special thanks to Marie Sarmon, who always responded in a timely and informative fashion and ensured everything went smoothly. Her skills shone when the Kaikoura part of the trip was cancelled due to the earthquake and we always felt we were in good hands. We have already recommended your company to our friends on the strength of her skills and our overall satisfaction.

We really enjoyed the self-drive tour basis and the spacings/locations of each night stop were such that daily driving times weren't demanding. It was also good that we had more than one night in three of the stops. We had opted for the mid-range accommodation option and were very pleased with the standard of each stay. The overnight ship option in Doubtful Sound was definitely a highlight and so we are very glad that this could be accommodated in our itinerary. There were no hiccups with accommodation bookings - we even got several unexpected upgrades! - or the several booked transfers.

A lovely holiday in an absolutely beautiful country. The South Island of New Zealand takes your breath away around just about every corner. Mani at Relaxing Journeys patiently tailored a 9 day tour of the South Island for us and we could not have asked for anymore from him and Relaxing Journeys. Everything was organised as planned and we had no issues at all with our accommodation and pre-booked tours. Our highlights were the helicopter flight and snow landing on the Fox Glacier and walking up to Kea Point and seeing the summit of Mt Cook and being so close to Mt Sefton, the Footstool and the glaciers right in front of us. Spectacular! We had a family holiday and our 6yo loved it saying it was his best holiday ever. He loved the helicopter flight too with his face saying it all. We also had lots of family fun on the Luge at the Queenstown Skyline. Thank you New Zealand and Relaxing Journeys for a memory-filled holiday. We just loved it!

Everything was just great, except the weather at Franz Josef and you couldn't change that! We sincerely appreciated all the upgrades - had a great AWD Toyota Highlander which was great on the wet and slippery roads. We finally caught a glimpse of Mt. Cook as we were leaving, after cloud cover and high water prevented us from doing much hiking. The upgraded hotel in Franz Josef was a treat, as well. The Heritage Hotel in Christchurch was terrific and gave us a great vantage point to explore the quake damage and restoration going on. Will be better when more restaurants are available but enjoyed Fiddlesticks twice and learned a lot about rugby since we caught the All Black spirit everywhere. Thanks for a great service! We will certainly use you in the future and recommend you to our friends.

Our trip was wonderful. It would have been less tiring if we had planned to spend 2 nights in each place, but because we only had two weeks to see as much as possible we opted to spend only one night in most places so that we could see more of the country during our visit. For the most part our accommodations were very nice. We were not happy with the room at Peppers Clearwater Resort in Lake Tekapo and also the little 'hut' at the Heritage Hotel Hammer Springs. We also felt the Hot Springs were over rated and very much like a water park. Your company was recommended to us by friends and we will certainly recommend 'Relaxing Journeys' to anyone interested in a beautiful trip to New Zealand! Thanks.

Every thing was well organised and stress free. The tour covered much of the South Island, with each area having its own unique attractions and activities. When there was a problem with the possible closure of the Haast Pass, Relaxing Journeys made contact with us and were ready to organise alternate arrangements, should they be needed. We had a great time, much of it thanks to the efficient organisation of Relaxing Journeys. Thank you from both of us.

had a fantastic time throughout the entire holiday. Found some of the distances to cover a bit much sometimes as by the time you get to some overnight stops you cant take in all the sights, and you are back on the road agin the next morning. In particular the Hamner Springs component was troubling in this way. We arrived late afternoon, having followed the suggestions to visit Mount Cook on the way, to find the pool access was only for that day so it was literally book into the hotel, and race to the pools before dinner. Obviously we should have better researched and modified the itinery, and will stagger things better next time. That said, we had a great time, and nothing was too much trouble, anywhere we stayed. Thanks to Michelle for looking after us! (Ed. It's always a juggling act - more time to relax = longer itineraries = more accommodation = more cost, but we always try to find that balance.)

We came back from our self drive holiday (Southern Delight) a few weeks ago and both wish we could have been there longer than the 2 weeks we had planned! In regards to the tour itself, it was really a hassle free holiday. Our booking package was given to us by our friendly driver upon arrival at the airport and we LOVED the road atlas that was included. We did not run into any problems for the duration of the trip. The itinerary was very well planned and we appreciated the suggestions of look-outs, restaurants, etc. The hotels we stayed at were all satisfactory and we found that they had no problem accommodating our needs for an early breakfast time when we had activities planned. All breakfasts were included with most of them being a buffet breakfast. Now, the quality of buffets was so consistently good that we actually chose that instead of the cooked breakfast when that was on offer! The activities included in the tour were nice and the possibility of adding excursions such as the overnight Milford Sound cruise was very convenient and so easily done at the time of booking. Of course, doing a self-drive also gives you the freedom to choose what you want to do and make detours as you go along, which is what we wanted. If I had to choose which of the automatically included activities was the best, I would have to say that it felt amazing to soak in the pools at Hanmer Springs after a few days of driving and hiking. So relaxing! Our consultant, Michelle, was quite helpful and efficient. She made some valuable suggestions and kindly answered all of the questions that we had, even though they may not always have made sense. We cannot thank you enough for your help and expertise! All in all, we had a wonderful holiday in New Zealand. The scenery was breathtaking, the food (and wine, of course) was great, and the New Zealanders are the friendliest people I have ever had the chance to meet so far! We would recommend Relaxing Journeys to anyone without hesitation. You won't regret it, if only for the stress free experience and excellent customer service you will get. (Ed. Thanks heaps!)

Our first trip to NZ and everything happened as planned by Michelle. Nothing messed up. There wasn't even a need to contact Relaxing Journeys during our whole self drive trip except to get a refund for an activity which a few of us didn't want to do after getting sea sick. And Michelle sorted it out for us very quickly. I would certainly recommend my friends to Relaxing Journeys if they are planning their holidays in NZ.

Our hugest thanks to Jarrod for organising our fabulous tour - all done in less than a week! A tour consultant extraordinaire! Our group of 6 had a fantastic time. The Hyundai IMax was spacious, comfortable for all and easy to park too. The hotels were well located and lots had beautiful views and we were very well looked after. The tour gave us enough time to see plenty at each location and NZ is so pretty we have hundreds of picture postcard photos. We saw whales and dolphins, kiwis, seals, so many beautiful lakes and waterfalls, mountains and coastal scenes. Lots of adventure too with jet boating, help-hiking and horse riding too! A great family holiday. We would recommend you most highly.

We had an amazing trip! From start to finish, it was spectacular. The whole tour was organised flawlessly. The accommodation was great, lots of space for the kids. We would have liked a bigger room in Queenstown, as we were there for 3 nights, but it was still a great hotel. The Thrifty representative was waiting for us when we arrived in Greymouth, so there was no worry about finding the office, this was one of our concerns when we read an earlier review. The car was perfect, no problems at all. There were plenty of highlights, the Dolphin Encounter was right at the top. Thank you for making it a wonderful holiday.

Absolutely 'fentestic'... We did a 12 day self drive tour of the South Island with a trip on the TranzAlpine train and had the best holiday!. The apartments were extremely high quality and easy to find. Possibly the Rees at Queenstown was my favourite - due to the degustation menu! The car was comfortable, the views were nothing short of spectacular. The kids enjoyed it all..even testing out the electric fence inadvertently. Kaikoura was a highlight....seal pups playing in the waterfall - magic!

The tour was amazing and definitely appreciate your knowledge of the country , best route etc. The only difficulty was the hire car company. The Thrifty office was the only one not actually situated in the railway station at Franz Josef. The car they gave us was malfunctioning, so we had to return it. They advised us that it was the only one they had available and we had to take it to the garage to have it fixed! They eventually did make a call to head office and after some time and valeting another vehicle where we able to continue our journey. I was not impressed and would suggest you seriously consider using this company again. The accommodation was excellent and the service was superb, and I would definitely recommend your company to friends and family. (RJ - Thanks for your feedback Leisha, we will be looking into this issue. Glad the rest of your holiday was worth recommending!)

First, the planning and execution went flawlessly. All of the changes were handled perfectly by Jarrod and all questions were handled very quickly. It was very nice to have one point of contact to work with during the entire planning and vacation process. Jarrod provided exceptional service and was very personable and easy to work with. Highly recommend that Jarrod be promoted to CEO or president of the company if he isn't already. (CEO - I just sacked him to protect my job!) The Tree House at Hapuku Lodge (Kaikoura) was the highlight of our trip. Throughout our trip, some of the accomodations were aware it was our honeymoon and left congratulation gifts in our room when we showed up. Very nice touch and much appreciated. Overall, we had an amazing experience and will definitely use Relaxing Journeys again if we return to NZ, and highly recommend them to our friends (RJ - This review has been edited for brevity)

Jarrod, we had just a fabulous trip! Thanks for your excellent planning and suggestions. The accommodations were uniformly lovely, especially the B&Bs - Hotel St. Moritz was a bit of a bummer because we had a room on the street side, but the hotel itself and the breakfasts were great! They tried to move us to the lake side view but indicated they were totally full. All of our B&B hosts were charming and hospitable, especially the Cheltenham House folks who gave us wine in the evening and the best breakfast to order we had. Colin and Chris at the Fyffe Country Lodge in Kaikoura put on an excellent gourmet dinner for us and 4 other guests (paid for by us). They were very solicitous and kind on the morning when Michael felt ill. All the hosts were interesting and each accommodation was unique . We did change our minds twice about the Doubtful vs. Milford Sound trip, finally taking an informal poll of the staff at the Hotel St. Moritz which tipped the scale. We enjoyed our long, foggy and rainy trip despite the weather. Were happy we decided to go to Doubtful especially after hearing they'd overbooked the Milford Sound trip so had been squeezed on the boat and had essentially the same weather. Thanks for being willing to change it. Overall the scenery was really more spectacular even than we had been led to expect. The sheer difference in topography was fascinating. We've done a lot of traveling around the world but this had to have been one of our best trips so far. Driving on the left was challenging but after one flat tire and a lost hub cap we did just fine. GPS never worked but we were able with the help of all the maps and the Information Centers locally to find all the B & B's. One thought -- maybe you could give more specific directions to some of these places in town as the addresses were so general. We appreciated being picked up and ferried everywhere but were spoiled by this so when we had to lug our suitcases around Greymouth to find the somewhat hidden Thrifty office we were a bit chagrined. Had to ask for help from kind locals. We're recommending your group.

Our trip went without a hitch. Accommodations were great, hosts/hostesses were all wonderful (especially Bernie at Holly Homestead in Franz Joseph), and we had a wonderful time. Drank lots of great beer, ate lots of great sea food, and met some great people. The weather wasn't kind in Kiakora, we had to cancel the Dolphin Encounter, but we made the Whale Watch tour the next day. We did all of the hikes (treks/walks) we had planned (5-8 miles, 8-13 km/day except on the long driving days). And the country was gorgeous!

We had a fantastic time on our holiday. Right back when we started tailoring our itinerary the service and help that we received from Cam was first rate. He always got back to us promptly with revised prices and helpful comments as to whether or not our plans were realistic (in terms of travelling times etc). We were also very impressed that he remembered details on our final itinerary that were only mentioned in passing on initial enquiries some months earlier. We only had one hiccup (wrong hire car on pick up at Greymouth). Although this was a mistake on Cams part we were very impressed how quickly he set things right and made sure we were duly compensated. Even more impressed on reflection that he was probably dealing with this when he was feeling poorly. A fantastic, memorable holiday which was a pleasure to organise through Relaxing Journeys because Cam gave us very personalised service and made us feel important. Daily servicing of our Motel units was an unexpected surprise that we do not think happens in Australia at the standard we booked.

Hello Craig, just wanted to let you know our holiday turned out to be one of the best we have ever taken. We loved the country, the people, even the weather! Your arrangements worked out perfectly, we were met on time and by very knowledgeable guides who had no problems giving us all the local knowledge we could ask for. The accommodation was excellent and the rental car worked out perfectly. We will certainly be coming back to see the rest of the South Island very soon.

Greetings from Australia!!! Our trip (Southern Delight) was FABULOUS even when the weather was chucking it down and the waves were misbehaving. This was absolutely the best holiday ever and we enjoyed every moment of it. The accommodation was great, the driving tips and routes that that you suggested were amazing - Derrick and I had a superb time and just when we thought it could not get any better, it always did. Thank you very much. Hope to do the North Island in 2008.

We just returned from the holiday last Friday night. It was a wonderful holiday and we found everything booked and ready for us. I must congratulate you and your company for preparing everything for us...really excellent! Once again, thank you for organising the wonderful holiday. We loved the country and the people. We'd probably consider a trip to the North Island in the future, and will definitely use your company's services again.
