Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Christchurch

“Haere Mai” Welcome to Christchurch – the Garden City. Upon arrival at Christchurch airport, you will be personally met by our representative and transferred in an executive sedan to your accommodation.

Following the 2011 earthquake, Christchurch has re-emerged as a vibrant, ever-changing city. What should you do with the rest of the day? Take it slow, sit back and relax, punting down the River Avon through the stunning Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

Day 2
Christchurch - Dunedin

Take delivery of your rental car this morning and travel south across the Canterbury Plains through seaside Timaru, and historic Oamaru. Here you can stop and sample the South Hill Walk, perfect for stunning coastal views from Cape Wanbrow.

Continue on to reach Moeraki  Beach – famous for the fascinating 60 million-year-old boulders. Maori legend describes these boulders as the food baskets of the gods.

Continue south to reach the Scottish influenced city of Dunedin, “the Edinburgh of the South”.

Day 3
Dunedin - Te Anau

Drive through the rolling hill country of South Otago and Southland. The Otago Harbour deserves to be on every bucket list. Board a Monarch Cruises vessel and savour an unrivalled view of Taiaroa Head, the only mainland nesting place for Northern Royal Albatross in the world and the home to New Zealand fur seals. Don’t be surprised if you spot dolphins, sea lions and countless ocean birds, including penguins!

After a visit to the farming centre of Gore, cross the Waimea plains towards Fiordland. Visit Lake Manapouri with its rugged bush clad mountains before arriving at the shores of Lake Te Anau.

Day 4
Te Anau - Milford Sound - Queenstown

Drive through pristine beech forests and the Homer Tunnel to Milford Sound. We have included a cruise on Milford Sound to enable you to appreciate the majesty of Mitre Peak and Bowen Falls.

On arrival at Milford Sound, board either the Milford Mariner or Milford Wanderer – our specifically designed fiord explorers – and settle in for a 2.5-hour cruise. Milford Sound is nothing short of heart-stopping, inducing subconscious smiles in the hard to please and easily bored almost instantly; it’s simply magnificent. Keep an eye out for dolphins, seals and penguins!

Return to Te Anau, then turn north, following the dramatic southern shores of Lake Wakatipu to reach Queenstown, a beautiful alpine resort town and regarded as one of New Zealand’s premier holiday destinations. (3 nights)

Day 5
Queenstown

The capital of adrenaline, beauty and local foodie culture, you can pick and choose from a long list of adventures. From thrilling funyak tours along the Dart River and horse-riding in Glenorchy, to panning for gold in Arrowtown or taking a tour of Lake Wakatipu via the TSS Earnslaw, there is certainly something for every speed.

Or, if you’re not ready to break the spell of the last few days a scenic walk may do the trick, exploring the diverse range of stunning trails the region delivers in troves.

Day 6
Queenstown

Enjoy another day of exploring the magnificent Queenstown. If you have not yet had your will of adventure, why not try bungy jumping or white water surfing, jet-boating, canyoning and luging.

Added to that the more traditional pursuits of rafting, wind-surfing, mountain biking and skiing in winter. The only question to as is: ‘Will you have time to fit it all in?’

Day 7
Queenstown - Franz Josef

Depart Queenstown this morning, travel along the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea to the Haast Pass, gateway to World Heritage Westland National Park.

Then continue up the West Coast past spectacular mountain ranges, native forests and lakes to Franz Josef Glacier. (2 nights)

Day 8
Glaciers

Endless opportunities exist to allow you to take in the beauty of this special part of the South Island’s West Coast. Take a guided walk or heli-hike to explore the spectacular ice formations, experience the thrill of a scenic flight and place your footprints onto a high alpine snowfield.

You could visit New Zealand’s only White Heron (Kotuku) nesting colony, take in the scenery as you kayak the stunning Okarito lagoon or visit Lake Matheson, renowned for its mirror images of Aoraki (Mt Cook) and Mt Tasman, New Zealand’s highest peaks.

Day 9
Franz Josef - Christchurch

Travel north along the narrow, bush clad, coastal plain past Hokitika, to Greymouth. Turn inland towards the Southern Alps to travel through the Otira Gorge, over Arthur’s Pass and across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.

Day UP
TranzAlpine Train Upgrade Package

Upgrade your itinerary to include the TranzAlpine train journey to Christchurch! Drop your vehicle off in Greymouth and then join the TranzAlpine Train for your journey across the Alps.

The TranzAlpine is described as “The Great New Zealand Rail Adventure” and is rated as one of the top six scenic train journeys in the world – with accolades like those, you know it will be good.

Ascend through lush beech forests past the beautiful Lake Brunner via the alpine village of Arthur’s Pass situated 737 metres above sea level, before crossing the spectacular Southern Alps. The TranzAlpine then winds its way over massive viaducts, through spectacular river gorges and the stunning Waimakariri River valley before arriving in Christchurch.

On arrival in Christchurch we’ll arrange transfers to your accommodation and transfers the next day to the airport for your onward flight.

Day 10
Depart Christchurch

Sadly your holiday is at an end and you will return your rental car to Christchurch airport today for your onward flight. Here, we bid you a fond farewell and hope you leave with many happy memories of your stay in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

A wonderful tour that exceeded all my expectations. Every arrangement clicked into place with unbelievable precision. We were never left waiting for a second at any airport or hotel lobby. Well done, Marie Sarmon. We had a slight hiccup with the GPS commentary device and I recommend that those who are technically-challenged buy a local SIM card to put in their mobile phones so they can contact the company for advice (Mobile phones with overseas numbers cannot connect to a toll-free service). We did, however, overcome the problem and simply nothing else went wrong. I won't go on describing the tour or New Zealand, because I will run out of superlatives.

Words can not express how fabulous our vacation was! Our tour consultant, Mani Fagundes, built a perfect tour for us. It was customized to include the famous Tongariro National Park Alpine Crossing hike and then followed the Pure South Island self-drive itinerary. Mani and Relaxing Journeys made this the easiest vacation ever. When we arrived at our rental car company, just as promised we received a complete package of information including our vouchers, detailed itinerary, helpful road map, and guidebooks for each major town that we visited. All we had to do was follow the itinerary, it was just that easy. Driving in New Zealand is very easy. The roads are wide, smooth, and well marked. There were arrows everywhere so remembering which side of the road to drive on was not a problem. Clearly New Zealand has made an investment in their road system to assist their many visitors and boost tourism. Using vouchers was incredibly easy. Car rentals, NZ domestic airfare e-tickets, hotel accommodations, excursions, taxi rides, and private car service were all reserved in advance for us, all we had to do was hand over the voucher. I wish all vacations were as simple as that! We knew in advance what all of our costs would be and did not have to keep handing over money every day. Mani booked our car through Thrifty and we had a beautiful Toyota Camry. It was clean, efficient, and the perfect size. The hotel accommodations were immaculate, their service was top-notch, and the locations were perfect so that we could walk to everything once we arrived at our hotels. They were interesting and beautiful. I also feel that we were given better rooms within the hotels, all our rooms had a view of whatever landmark was near (lake, rainforest, downtown, etc). I think it may have been better to book through a company than individually because it may give a better chance of getting better rooms. We enjoyed quite a few excursions and we loved every one. We did the heli-hike in Franz Josef Glacier - that is a MUST DO. We did the zip-line echo tour in Queenstown which was fun, they have the steepest zip line in the world. We did the Dart River jet boat and funyak (which are inflated kayaks) in Queenstown and that was fabulous. We saw miniature blue penguins in the Otago Peninsula by Dunedin - that may have been our favorite part of the trip, they were absolutely adorable. We saw glow worms in a cave in Te Anau which was great fun. And we did an excellent bus tour of Christchurch. Aside from the excursions, Mani gave a good description of sites to see during the long drives in between towns. We stopped at wineries, a gold mining town, jade (green stone) artisan shop, glass blowing studio, and too many short hikes / overlooks to count. Do not be intimidated by long drives between towns. The itinerary left us plenty of time to take it slow and enjoy the scenery, and driving there is so easy. Literally almost no stoplights (just round-abouts) and there is no stress in the driving. The self-drive itinerary was a great way to see the country. We did have a few questions during our trip, and each time I called Relaxing Journeys they quickly answered the phone and gave me an answer on the spot. They even called the Christchurch bus tour company when I couldn't find them to make sure I connected with them. Both Mani and Relaxing Journey provided excellent service. Mani took all of the guess work out of our trip - where to stay, where to go, and what to do - which meant that we could just go and enjoy ourselves. We had the vacation of a lifetime and I'd highly recommend using Relaxing Journeys when planning a vacation in New Zealand. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

Right from the first exchange of mails everything was perfect. Ms.Toni first understood our requirements, devised an itinerary to our needs, provided useful suggestions regarding the various tour programs and most importantly executed it perfectly. So good was the execution that I didn't have the need to use my phone once tour commenced! Prompt reply to mails was another thing that impressed me...keeping in mind the time zone differences. I chose Relaxing Journeys after I couldn't reach an agreement with my first tour operator...and I don't regret it a bit now. Your rates were better than the rates available on internet. Coupled with it your local knowledge made it a terrific experience. NZ is an amazing country especially South Island...right out of books. So blown away we were with the beauty we stopped taking photos and decided to soak in every moment. All accommodations, tours, local guides...exceptional. This will rank as one of our best trips. Thanks everyone.

The time estimate between stops was greatly underestimated. At least two hours additional would be more accurate. At the Fletcher Lodge no one was available to help us carry our luggage up two flights of stairs. Blanket Bay was outstanding. The George was also very nice.

Overall we really enjoyed our trip. We were really taken by the the beautiful environments in Christchurch, Arrowtown and Franz Josef Glacier. Accommodation was good. Would love to stay in the Heritage Hotel, Dockbay Lodge and The Arrow Private Hotel again. The Scenic Hotel in Franz Josef was a bit of a disappointment though. Our room had a funny smell at first and we had to open the windows for half a day in order to get rid of it. Wasn't sure about traveling through Dunedin either, because it was difficult to do much there given the very long drive from Christchurch. Had high hope for the Alpine Scenic Train but proved to be average only. Will probably skip it next time when we visit NZ. We were also very impressed by the neat organization of all our travel documents (maps, vouchers, brochure etc). It certainly made our trip free from major hassles.

This was our first experience of self touring. A great tour though I suspect it would have been better had we known about the commentary on the Sat Nav. Only discovered it on the last day! Maybe a reminder at car pick would have helped. However, being a keen map reader and Lonely planet reader we still got interesting facts etc. Accommodation was out of this world - top notch each and every stay. All host were friendly, helpful and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. We stayed in a mixture of hotels, B&B and boutique hotels - all exquisite. Brilliant choices so well done Relaxing Journeys for sourcing such places. The driving was a little taxing....not always possible to relax and see all we wanted as the distances were on some days very long. Would have preferred at least two night stay in all places or a shorter distance between each. Would certainly return as this tour offered a fantastic flavour of NZ and highlighted it's amazing attractions, history and geography as well as its famous friendliness. Our tour arranger, Mani, was amazing helping change things around to accommodate my birthday without fuss. Very much appreciated, thank you Mani. It was a fabulous holiday and birthday with memories to treasure. I have passed my recommendations to use Relaxing Journeys to colleagues for their NZ holiday.

Everything went like clockwork, from receiving information before leaving for the trip, arrival at Christchurch was perfect and we can't think of anything that was wrong with the vacation. We made one late change to our itinerary one week before travelling and it was no problem. We chose boutique hotels and they were all very suitable for the locations we were in, special mention to Prospect Lodge in Te Anua; always book this one if you get a chance. Allow a full day for the Milford sound trip, there is so much to stop and see on the way up and down. I'd recommend Relaxing Journeys and tour consultant Toni to everyone - you will not be let down.

Our trip was everything we had hoped for and more. All of our accommodations and connections were perfect. Everyone was on time, expecting us and most friendly and helpful. The GPS commentary was interesting and informative but the directions to specific locations were poor and often incorrect. We would have liked to stay a little longer some places and missed a few in retrospect. We will be back someday to take in more of this wonderful place. New Zealand is a beautiful country with friendly people. We love New Zealand and Relaxing Journeys.

Being winter and both Sunday's most tourist things where shut or closed early before we reached them. Also recommend that if you are going to Milford Sound that you stay an extra night in Te Anau especially in winter after a late tour off Milford sound in winter as you don't get to see much as it is dark. Other than that the tour was great we both enjoyed.

Relaxing journeys provided us with sufficient information to prepare us for the road trip ahead (NZ atlas, brochures, etc.). The car was what we expected. The GPS wasn't really that helpful though. Aside from that, accommodation and the itinerary were superb. Truly enjoyed our honeymoon. We would definitely go back to NZ. Mani was super helpful in providing us information and arranging our trip based on our budget. Thank you!

No problems with any of our tour. All accommodation bookings & transfers etc were faultless. Accommodation was of a high standard (except Distinction Te Anau which was awful). Kruse was helpful and documentation was excellent. We would highly recommend Relaxing Journeys and will certainly use them again when traveling to NZ. We crammed a lot into 12 days but it was well worth it.

It was a pleasure working with Toni who was always courteous, professional, and prompt in her replies. She even arranged perfect weather for us! Thank you, Toni. We tailored our tour a bit to fit our interests (more days in Te Anau, fewer days in Queenstown), and everything worked out beautifully. Our vouchers were accepted without question and our dietary requests honored. All the places we stayed at were lovely and conveniently located for getting in and out of the cities easily, but close enough to walk to the CBD. We appreciated being met at the airport and taken to our first hotel in Christchurch. It helped us orient ourselves to the city and feel welcomed and very well taken care of. We only wish we could have stayed longer and enjoyed even more of the beautiful country and friendly people of New Zealand.

Tour was very well organized and everything went smoothly; the only snag was that the hire car company had the wrong hotel (they went to the hotel that was originally booked, not the one we finally choose) but this was quickly resolved. The Kruse GPS system was very useful and informative. Scenery each day was spectacular. The driving distances each day were at the limit of what we were comfortable with. Accommodation overall was very good; Fiordland Lodge at Te Anau was a highlight. Mantra at Lake Tepako was very spacious (more than we needed) but had no view of the lake.

What a beautiful country. The holiday was a blast. All started well. Lodgings were good and very easy to get to and check in no hassles. My family especially enjoyed 858 Motel. The Motel experience was by far the best and a new experience. Only minor draw backs was the vehicle given by Thrifty. We were given a new Ssang Yong Kornado. It was small in size as we were expecting a Toyota Camry sedan sized vehicle. The smaller vehicle did have its advantages in getting parking in tight places. The other drawback was Kruse. It was not very helpful and lags very badly. 3 days of the trip we could not use it as it could not be recharged. Then it started working again after that. Besides these small drawbacks the trip was excellent and tiring. Leanne. Thanks so much for making the arrangements. It worked out well.

Overall it went very well, and I appreciate your assistance in organizing the itinerary. Highlights were: 1) Milford Sound 2) Queenstown (especially the boutique wine tour and the lake cruise / lunch) 3) Franz Josef (where we hired a helicopter) and 4) the TranzAlpine train experience. George Hotel in Christchurch was fantastic, as was the Fiordland Lodge in Te Anau and the Browns Boutique Hotel in Queenstown. In Franz Josef we were upgraded from the Scenic to the Te Waonui Forest Resort, which was wonderful and we had a very good 2 evenings there, with outstanding service. The new Rydges in Christchurch where we stayed on our return journey was fine. The disappointment was the Scenic in Dunedin where the service was ordinary at best. Car from Thrifty was good, the Kruse commentary was very good and we learnt a lot about each area by listening to the background stories! It was not good as a GPS navigator though, and in the end we relied on the map book you provided. Your itinerary / summary provided was good, but felt in many cases that you had underestimated the time to travel from point to point. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Everything was well organized and prepared when we arrived. Many hotels were comfortable and with good service and food, notably in Dunedin, Te Anau, and Franz Josef. The car was also up to our expectations, and the car rental service very efficient. My wife's special diet requirement was taken care of in every hotel and breakfast, something she appreciated mostly as we had many bad experiences before elsewhere. The whole journey was well paced, and was both exciting and relaxing. Would love to do it agin in future, with another route and in another season. Many thanks, Toni, for your attention to detail, and the effort you took to look for the right alternatives in high season. As a family, we have done over the past thirty odd years, motoring trips all over the world (NZ, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, US, Canada, Ireland, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, etc.), this was indeed one of the most comfortable, pleasant, and relaxing one for us.

We had a lovely time. New Zealand was perfect - the people, the food, the scenery and the activities. Toni had arranged such a lovely itenerary, spread out between relaxing nature drives and walks, hiking, wine tasting and adventure sports. We managed to get a taste of every facet of the South Island, and enjoyed every bit of it. Some commentary below for further details.

Christchurch: Beautiful, lovely city; damaged by the earthquakes, we managed to see how the city is trying to rebuild. The heart and soul of Christchurch was damaged, but flashes of brilliance still remains; we loved the George Hotel, and enjoyed the park and punting in the river.

Drive down to Dunedin: The drive down was very easy, and lots to do. We stopped by a cheese factory (which was small - perhaps the Whitestone factory would have been nicer.), and surprised ourselves with a very lovely wallaby park in Oamaru. The Moeraki Boulders was nice, but we arrived too late to enjoy a cup of coffee at the cafe.

Dunedin: We loved the Fletcher Lodge - Keith and Ewa certainly made us feel at home. We cannot stress how welcome they made us feel. They recommended us for a drive at the Otago Peninsula, and helped us book the Yellow-Eyed Pengin and Blue Penguin tours. The drive itself was amazing, and we managed to squeeze in a visit to Larnach Castle. Would have loved another day to explore Dunedin town itself but we managed a good dinner around the hexagon - so that's good.

Drive to Te Anau: The drive was easy, with a lovely stop in Lumsden for pies. The owner of the Bafe Cafe let us in (even when he was closed) and was thrilled to see he was the top restaurant on Tripadvisor - even gave us free donuts to taste.

Te Anau: The Lodge was amazing - beautifully built (trivia: the architect that built the lodge was the same one that helped the Fletcher Lodge renovate - Ewa's son worked at the same firm as well). Service was excellent and food was amazing. We were made to feel at home indeed. The glow worm caves were amazing, and so was the cruise to Doubtful Sound - would recommend to everyone. Te Anau itself was so friendly - the owner of the pie shop by the lake even came out to chat with us.

Drive to Queenstown: This was an easy drive, with plenty of lovely scenery to keep us occupied. The vista at Lake Wakatipu itself was amazing, and perhaps worth a coffee stop.

Queenstown: We had a fabulous time here. The wine tour that was arranged really hit the spot - the vinyards were lovely and the lunch was amazing. We were pretty sloshed after it all but worthwhile. We managed bungee jumping, skydiving, jet-boating, zip-trekking and the luge. Restaurants were also amazing, we did not have a single bad meal there. The hotel itself was lovely, with fantastic service (they helped book our extreme sports) and recommended restaurants well. Their canapes and drinks at 6pm definitely made us feel at home. We were sad to leave Queenstown.

Drive to Franz Joseph: This was a long drive, with few stops in between. The mountain drive was exhilarating, and the Haast Pass was lovely (although the drive through the rainforest was a little boring). We barely stopped and got to Franz Joseph in good time.

Franz Joseph: The Te Waonui Hotel was nice, but staff were a little befuddled (yet very friendly) to be honest. The bathroom door couldn't be locked (and in fact, we had to jam it shut). The restaurant staff insisted we have dinner at 7:45pm, and our dinner was a bit disappointing. I'd instead recommend the new restaurant in town (asian fusion food, it's called 88 i think), as well as the Landing Bar, for a good sense of the town. We loved the heli-hike though - it was only the 3 of us, so the guide took us quickly, and high into the ice falls, and two hours went by too quickly. We also enjoyed the quad bikes and the hot pools there.

Drive to Greymouth: This was a nice drive, although need to be cautious of roadworks.

Greymouth: Was a strange town, we got there just in time for the train (which was slightly delayed)

Tranzalpine to Christchurch: This was honestly quite disappointing - the carriages were old (they replaced the new with old due to some problems with the same carriages in the North Island), and the ride itself was slow (due to track works and signal problems - we arrived 1.5 hours later than scheduled). They also didn't allow us to cross the Arthur's Pass tunnel due to coal dust build-up; instead made us disembark onto coaches. The views in the Alps itself was stunning, we enjoyed that, but the train itself was tiring and to be honest, slightly uncomfortable. Perhaps a drive back to Christchurch would have been nicer. However, it was a perfect holiday, and we'd definitely recommend to everyone. We thank you for your help, Toni, and would be happy to arrange another visit again!

Thanks for a fantastic holiday Kirby & team! The accommodation exceeded expectations, particularly the B&B's. The hosts couldn't have been more wonderful. The drives were great and the hikes, scenery, villages, people and food we found along the way were fantastic. The Milford Sound was the highlight of the trip as we had perfect weather so we could fully enjoy the massive snow capped mountains of the Fiord, the spectacular waterfalls, and the playful penguins, seals and dolphins. To top it off, we got engaged at the end of our perfect day at the Milford Sound! So hopefully we'll have many anniversary trips back. We will happily highly recommend your services to everyone, as it couldn't have been easier to organise and it was such a wonderful holiday. Thanks for all your efforts in making it so great. (Ed. Everything was very well-arranged, including all transportation and accomodation selection. Rental cars provided were new and very comfortable. Our itinerary contained a very comprehensive ceverage of the South Island although the weather was not too accomodating the first two days. We all enjoyed the fantastic scenery throughout. The only drawback was the amount of extended driving in order to cover the rather long distances. In general it was a very enjoyable trip and one I would recommend to anyone who wishes to have a quiet and yet wonderous two-week break.

Wow, we had a wonderful time! Probably would have liked more time. Christchurch to Dunedin did not leave us any time to look around Dunedin during daylight hours, as we stopped along the way at the boulders, Whitestone Cheese Factory and also a Berry Farm coffee shop. The trip to Te Anua did not allow time to dawdle in the morning, as we wanted to see the Glow Worms. Unfortunately we missed the boat by one minute (very unbending girls on the desk) - they were only running limited tours. The team at Fiordland Lodge were wonderful, they bent over backwards to ensure that our trip was not spoilt by this experience, and secured a refund for us. We went to Milford Sound, as arranged, and as our trip finished at 3pm, we arrived quite late in Queenstown, even though we did not waste any time in our travelling. It seemed to us that it would have been better to travel from Milford back to Te Anua and have another night there, then travel to Queenstown in the morning, which would have allowed us to look at things along the way. Franz Josef was lovely accommodation, but lacked the ambience of the B&B's and the smaller hotels. The breakfasts at Te Wanui were very average. Unfortunately the weather did not allow us to take a Helihike tour, but we found plenty to do around the area. The drive to Christchurch from Franz Joseph was long but manageable. Greymouth was disappointing, and really just added to our travelling time. All in all, a wonderful holiday and fantastic accommodations. You have converted us to B&B's, we had wonderful hosts and great experiences. We will be back! Thank you Jarrod for your assistance and input while we were planning our trip.

This was the most amazing experience. Unbelievable beautiful country. Thank you for organizing our trip and for all the practical info and bookings. Everything was special and exiting, but the 3 highlights was The heli-hike. Just amazing. Then the Glacier Explorer cruise at Mt cook. The guides were excellent - and for the first time I understand how the glaciers form our world. And to get so close to the massive icebergs - without going to ant-artica. Just amazing. And then the overnight cruise on the Fordland Expedition. Being a small boat, with fantastic meals and personal touch - with the fishing and canoeing, without lots of tourist (which is the only negative for me - the lots and lots of tour busses). So it was nice to get away from it all! The accommodation was always located in a good spot to be able to explore the town or city. Thank you to Toni for personalizing to tour to fit our family needs and sending lots and lots of emails and giving us all the info we needed. And the big thing is being practical on what is realistic to do in one day, or how far to travel in one day. Thank you to Relaxing Journeys and Toni! We will be back soon!

Thank you so much for planning our wonderful trip. Everything was very smooth and worked out perfectly. We really enjoyed all the hotels you selected. Additionally, your country is just absolutely beautiful. All three of us had an amazing time. Some thoughts for improvement - make a stop in Te Anau after Milford Sound. The return drive straight to Queenstown is too long in our opinion.
