Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Auckland

On arrival at Auckland airport, you will be personally met by our representative & transferred in an executive sedan to your accommodation. The ‘City of Sails’ is New Zealand’s largest and most vibrant, offering an exciting array of cosmopolitan experiences. Built on an isthmus of 48 volcanoes, Auckland’s fertile valleys and islands are home to award-winning wineries. Family attractions abound and the city has plenty of adrenaline for adventure lovers. Indulge in Auckland’s shopping, nightlife and unrivalled cuisine. Discover why Auckland is one of the best places in the world to live – and visit.

Day 2
Auckland - Hokianga

Take delivery of your rental car this morning. Head north out of Auckland for an hour and a half before turning west and taking a step back in time. Approximately 40 kms south of Dargaville is Matakohe, home to the Kauri Museum (admission included). This amazing museum tells the fascinating story of the pioneering days through the use of kauri timber and kauri gum. Explore the many exceptional displays and galleries inside the museum from the magnificent collection of antique kauri furniture and the largest collection of kauri gum in the world to restored machinery including New Zealand’s earliest tractor, a 1929 Cat 60, and a turning steam sawmill. Continue north through Dargaville to the Waipoua Forest.

This evening, you will enjoy an eco-cultural experience unlike any other. Descendants of NZ’s first Polynesian discoverer, Kupe, will take you on a guided walk of the largest kauri forest in the world and introduce you to their relationship with Mother Nature, both spiritually and culturally. This ecologically significant environment, in former times a home and playground to Maori, is brought to life by not only the sounds and potential sightings of its inhabitants but by friendly, experienced local Maori guides who willingly share their knowledge, stories, song and musical instruments to enlighten and enhance this tranquil and spiritual location. ‘Twilight Encounter’ is an experience that allows visitors to enter the Waipoua forest at a unique time – a time not experienced by many; a time when its inhabitants change; a time when seeing is replaced with listening and a time when the clouds and sun are replaced by stars and the moon.

Day 3
Hokianga - Bay of Islands

A leisurely drive today. There is time for an optional guided boat cruise of the beautiful and twisting harbour of Hokianga before making your way across the peninsula to Paihia, a seaside town nestled on the shores of this National Maritime Park in the Bay of Islands. On arrival a visit to the historic Waitangi Treaty House is included. (3 nights)

Day 4
Bay of Islands - Cape Reinga Tour - Bay of Islands

This morning, board your light aircraft & fly to Cape Reinga. View spectacular harbours and beaches including the famous Ninety Mile Beach. Once on the ground, spend approximately 2½ hours exploring & touring New Zealand’s northernmost point with a local guide. The return flight back to the Bay of Islands includes some of the most awesome coastal scenery Northland has to offer. This afternoon is free for relaxing or optional touring & cruises.

Day 5
Bay of Islands - Swim with the Dolphins - Bay of Islands

Dolphins are one of earth’s most fascinating creatures and the Bay of Islands is blessed with their presence all year round. On this the ultimate marine adventure, you’ll get right up close to the dolphins. Watch their antics and get fantastic photos. The Bay has the warmest waters in New Zealand for swimming with dolphins. You’ll get to the dolphins fast in a water-jet powered catamaran. It’s the best vessel for dolphin viewing with large deck areas and plenty of room to move around. It’s not just dolphins you’ll see – at times you’ll see orcas, whales, seals, penguins and other wildlife.

After your Dolphin Encounter you’ll have the added bonus of stopping off on beautiful Urupukapuka Island. If you wish, stay for the day at no extra cost. Enjoy the coastal walks and magnificent beaches or browse through the Maori Arts and Crafts centre. All snorkeling gear is provided as are wetsuits if required.

Day 6
Bay of Islands - Auckland

It’s a good day for exploring today as there are many possibilities for stops on the way down south. At Waipu turn left to Waipu Cove and follow that road down through Langs Bach and Mangawhai. Waipu Cove is the local surf beach in the area. Further on, at the old Bohemian settlement of Puhoi have a drink and sample some local cheese. A little further south is Waiwera where there are mineral hot pools to bathe and have fun in. Stay in Auckland tonight.

Day 7
Depart Auckland

At leisure today until you return your rental car to the airport in time to connect with your onward flight.

Sky City accommodation 7/10. a bit tired, but the location 10/10. All other accommodation 10/10. Our only suggestion for improvement would to be accommodated near to the airport when leaving early the next morning. We commend Salt Air who offered us a 45min helecopter ride over the Bay of Islands instead of the Cape Reinga tour which was cancelled due to bad weather. Mani hopefully the South Island next year.

It was fabulous! Easy and enjoyable. Although we ended up doing more activities than we would if we had made our own arrangements, they were all really memorable. My only suggestions would be that I think we would have enjoyed the Bay of Islands boat tour more on one of the smaller boats that were available and the Copthorne Hotel on the west coast, which was a lovely atmospheric place with a great location, but the checkout time of 10AM with breakfast concluding at 930AM was too early for people on vacation. But those are small quibbles, the Sanctuary Retreat was a standout, as was the twilight walk in the Wiapoua Forest. Thank you!

What a pleasure to have all the components to our trip organised so seamlessly. From recommendations in the planning to the airport pickup to the on time delivery of our hire car. All the instructions were clear and accurate and at each voucher point the provider recognized and provided to us exactly what was expected, and in some cases, exceeded expectations! We will certainly consider coming back to NZ on a similar adventure, short stay in a defined area. Where else in the world can you take us? (Ed. Hi Roger, thanks for your comments! Have you visted www.globaljourneys.com our sister website, catering for Australian's looking to discover the rest of the world!)

Well organised trip. We were on a tight schedule and particularly wanted to see the Bay of Islands, but did not know where to start. This trip sorted car hire, hotels, and trips for us. If we had waited until we got to the area, we may have missed booking some of them, especially the flight to Cape Reine and the walk in the forest at Hokianga. You were flexible and were able to extend our stay in some hotels. Highly recommended.

First let me say that we enjoyed our 3 nights at the Hotel DeBrett. The accommodations were perfect, breakfast with the most delicious muffins a great beginning. The limo was waiting for us when the ship docked and Dave was very friendly and a nice welcome to our arrival in Auckland. The Cape Rienga beach Trip was everything as described and I told my husband it was one out of four, only waiting to see what the next day would bring. Swimming with the dolphins made it two for two. What more could a 71 year old lady ask for. Well, ask and ye shall receive. The Ipiriri yacht cruise and now we were three for three hits. I would highly recommend this excursion. The accommodations, food and company were wonderful and all that remained was the Twilight Encounter Walk in the Waipoua Forest. This too was an exceptional experience. Put that together with the very charming hosts of the Waipoua Lodge and you have an amazing journey. A tremendous thank you to you and all your conscientious work and emailing. We found New Zealand to be a most beautiful country and should the opportunity arise we would love to return and see more of it. Again many, many thanks.
