Day 2
Auckland - Coromandel Peninsula

Today, travel south to the Coromandel Peninsula, a beautiful rugged area fringed with dozens of excellent beaches that separate the Pacific Ocean from the Hauraki Gulf.

Many Kiwis choose the Coromandel to escape the hustle and hype of city life, providing a home haven for many artists who seek a slow-paced lifestyle. A visit to the quaint town is highly recommended and if you have time, we suggest riding the Driving Creek narrow gauge railway to a wonder-inducing creative colony.

Cross the divide to the eastern side of the peninsula for your overnight stay. (2 nights)

Day 6
Opotiki - Gisborne

Drive past Ohope Beach to Opotiki before heading inland and across to Gisborne. There is a longer, alternative route around the East Cape if you are not in a hurry. The scenery here is nothing short of spectacular.

A string of remote rural communities dot the unspoilt Eastland coastline. Pounded by the wild surf of the Pacific Ocean, this region embraces one of New Zealand’s most beautiful and historic areas. Maori culture is strong in this part of the country, so be on the lookout for carved gateways and meeting houses (Maraes). (2 nights)

Many thanks for arranging our wonderful holiday. We had a great time. All the B&B accommodation was really good, all the hosts very friendly and informative and the organised trips really interesting. We were a bit disappointed that the hotel room in Auckland did not have a balcony. Our room, 507, appeared to be one of the only 2 rooms on the floor that did not have one. We found the Satnav really useful, and the additional historic & cultural info added much to the journey. However it was calibrated slightly incorrectly, giving turn instructions 100 yards before any turning, unfortunately often coinciding with another junction. Also the map was out of date as some of the newer roundabouts weren't there. Both these were just minor irritants. All in all we had a fantastic time and wouldn't hesitate in recommending the trip to anyone wanting to spend some time travelling in New Zealand.

Everything was wonderful, with the possible of exception of Martinborough. (Of course, I mean this constructively, Toni!) The only worthwhile thing about it seemed to be its proximity to Greytown, which was much more charming. Beyond that, the hotel may have had its attractions for advocates of antiquity, but I would have vastly preferred plumbing that worked. Still, all the rest was gorgeous, and Wellington was worth more days than we had. Zealandia is fascinating. Overall, great planning on your part!

I deliberately chose this particular tour because it covered the east coast of the North Island which I had missed on a previous trip to NZ. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and will never forget the amazing scenery, particularly the beautiful beaches and snow-capped mountains. No complaints about the hotels - all were of a high standard. Would have had difficulty finding some without the GPS receiver. Enjoyed all the side trips, particularly the Crocodile Dundee adventure, the boat trip to White Island and the Hawkes Bay winery tour. Did not anticipate having to drive so many twisty roads and one-lane bridges! Favourite place visited - probably Napier.
