This morning head north out of Auckland for an hour and a half before turning west and taking a step back in time. You’ll find a stop at the Matakohe Kauri Museum gives you some great insight to the area you are traveling through. Tonight you have the Twilight Encounter – a magical evening tour of the Waipoua Forest guided by local Maori guides.

Then you can make your way to Paihia, holiday resort of the North and gateway to the beautiful Bay of Islands. (3 nights)

Day 4
Bay of Islands - Cape Reinga Tour - Bay of Islands

We’ve arranged a coach tour for you today to Cape Reinga, the northernmost tip of New Zealand. There are numerous stops for you to take in the scenic highlights and activities. They start with the easy twenty minute boardwalk through the Puketi Kauri Forest. Then thunder along Ninety Mile Beach and sledge down the sand dunes there. Take a swim and dig for shellfish. See the picturesque village of Mangonui. Your Coach Captain’s local knowledge and informative commentary will make this trip one to remember. Fish ‘n’ Chip lunch (or falafel salad) included.

You can relax today and enjoy the Bay of Islands in a number of ways. We’ve included a cruise to the famous Hole in the Rock & Cape Brett for you this morning. Board the luxury catamaran which will whisk you on a comfortable journey out through game fishing waters to the Cape Brett Lighthouse. Next is Motukokako Island and the famous “Hole in the Rock” where we make a passage through the Hole and on to the Grand Cathedral Cave. On the return journey the cruise takes its time and meanders through the inner islands. View sandy beaches, beautiful bays and marine wildlife as your skipper gives an informative commentary. Included is an island stopover on beautiful Urupukapuka Island. As your catamaran docks at the Historic Otehei Bay, enjoy the white sandy beach, picturesque views and its rich archaeological landscape. On the way back you might like to stop off at Russell (New Zealand’s first capital) which was also known as the “Hell Hole of the Pacific” It’s now a quaint seaside village where you can take some time to wander around and enjoy.

Day 6
Bay of Islands - Auckland

It’s a good day for exploring today as there are many possibilities for stops on the way down south. At Waipu turn left to Waipu Cove and follow that road down through Langs Bach and Mangawhai. Waipu Cove is the local surf beach in the area. Further on, at the old Bohemian settlement of Puhoi have a drink and sample some local cheese. A little further south is Waiwera where there are mineral hot pools to bathe and have fun in. Stay in Auckland tonight.

This was the first time I have used a touring service and it won't be the last! Usually, for any holiday, I do extensive research about destinations, ridiculous amounts of web searching for accommodation and activities and chasing the best price and options. When I found myself with a week to spare between work commitments in NZ, I decided to see some of this beautiful country. But I didn't have the time to do all the research, planning and booking that goes into arranging a trip. Relaxing Journeys to the rescue. I looked at the range of itineraries on offer and Mani helped me to shape something to match our timeline and interests. Then all we had to do was pay, then turn up. Everything went smoothly and to plan. The Kruse commentary system is a lovely addition, adding insight and info as we cruised around. The detailed itinerary included suggested stop-off points which helped us plan our drives. And lovely touches like including a full touring atlas, local tourism info, and departure cards in our arrival pack. We got so much more out of our week because of the work and knowledge of Relaxing Journeys - the booked day trips added enormous value, while still leaving us enough time for our own interests and spontaneous explorations. The excursions selected for us were all fantastic - informative, fun, with excellent guides and staff. The highlight was Hokianga Harbour stay (hard to imagine a more relaxed area) and the Twilight Encounter with Footprints Waipoua. I would not have known about either of these if we had organised our own trip. The changes we made were to add Waitangi Treaty Grounds (a must do for any trip to the North), and to have an extra night in Hokianga by eliminating one of our nights in Auckland. Both very good decisions. Potential for improvement / things to be aware of: the motor lodge at Paihia is conveniently located but doesn't take advantage of its location (all the rooms face car parking slots while the beautiful bay is just across the road but out of site). And there is only 30 mins free wifi. The Copthorne at Hokianga is stunning with views of the harbour from your room. Sadly free wifi only available in common areas. If you are staying at the Scenic in Auckland parking is expensive so take it into account in your planning (in fact, I'd be quite interested in having the option of picking up or returning the car in the CBD rather than from the airport). The Paihia and Hokianga accommodation didn't have cooking facilities so we had to eat out all the time. Next time, I'd probably specify a preference for accommodation options with at least a small kitchenette. But these are all tiny things in the scheme of things. My experience with Relaxing Journeys has opened up a whole new way of travelling. Looking forward to my next opportunity to book with Relaxing Journeys.

We had a great time. Enjoyed all the excursions you had planned for us. The accommodation was up to the standard we prefer and the food was fresh and appealing. Selby had never seen such full oysters. The car was up to the job, the weather was variable but always seemed to be really great when we had a trip on the water. Thank you all went smooth. Definitely will recommend you to anyone wanting to do a travelling holiday, we didn't have to organize a thing except driving there!!

We were very happy with our tour arranged by Relaxing Journeys. The itinerary went very smoothly, the hotel accommodations were very comfortable and well equipped. The included tours on our vacation also met with our satisfaction, in particular the Twilight Encounter at Hokianga and the All Day trip to Cape Reinga both amazing and extremely informative. On both occasions we were fortunate with our tour guides, both of whom made these experiences so memorable. Truly, a well organised trip. We would be remiss if we did not express our thanks for the very efficient service provided by the staff at Relaxing Journeys (Auckland) in organising our 7 day self drive vacation. The two people we dealt with on line were Toni Harris and Frances Harris, both provided excellent service. Also it should be noted that the Manager and Staff at the Paihai Pacific Hotel in Paihai were extremely accommodating during our two day stay there. Would recommend your company to others intending a trip to New Zealand.

What can I say but that it was excellent almost throughout. The accommodation was of high standard in both Omapere and Paihia, some of the best 3-star places we have seen. In particular Stuart and his staff at the Pacific Beach hotel in Paihia were exceptionally friendly and welcoming - couldn't do too much, and always cheerful even under pressure. Having an upgraded room added to the delight. We could have stayed much longer in the Kauri Museum. The Footprints walk into the Waipoua Kauri forest (in steady rain) was so good. The guides did a great job and in a small group of seven we felt we were out walking with Maori friends. We went back next day to do it again in daylight and the dry. The sea at Ninety-mile beach (my motive for choosing this tour out of all of them) was spectacular to behold in bright sunshine against the backdrop of a storm approaching from the southwest. Though the creek at the north end was blocked near the mouth we still managed the dunes. We laughed at the state of SH1 near the Cape, though somehow when it's all finished and tidy up there it won't be so much of an adventure getting there. We appreciated the suggestions for diversions en route, followed each of them and enjoyed every one: the beautiful Boulder Valley, Kerikeri, Langs Beach and Mangawhai. I said 'almost'. The only complaint I had, I delivered in person to the Thrifty Rental desk. They hadn't done their preparation of the car properly - loose trim, unrecorded scratches, remote locking not working. But I wouldn't buy a Peugeot anyway ;-) So please be assured that we enjoyed every day, and have already recommended your company to friends who are still toying with the idea of doing their OE to New Zealand.
