Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Auckland

Welcome to Auckland! Once you’ve moved through customs and collected your baggage, it’s time to sign for your rental car and check-in at your accommodation. You’ve landed on the doorstep of New Zealand’s largest city, an idyllic setting overlooking the forested Waitakere Ranges, the sheltered Manukau Harbour and the island-studded Hauraki Gulf to the north.

No wonder over a million people choose to live here! Beautiful beaches and dreamy offshore islands are just half an hour from the city. In fact, the sea is so much a part of the place that an unusually high number of people own their own boats, giving the city its moniker of the ‘City of Sails’.

Day 2
Auckland - Bay of Islands

This morning head north out of Auckland today to the Bay of Islands. Take some time to visit Kerikeri on the way for arts, crafts, antiques and see one of the oldest buildings in the country – the Stone Store.

Then you can make your way to Paihia, holiday resort of the North and gateway to the beautiful Bay of Islands. (2 nights)

Day 3
Cape Brett and the Bay of Islands

You can relax today and enjoy the Bay of Islands in a number of ways. We’ve included a cruise to the famous Hole in the Rock and Cape Brett for you this morning. Board the luxury catamaran which will whisk you on a comfortable journey out through game fishing waters to the Cape Brett Lighthouse. Next is Motukokako Island and the famous “Hole in the Rock” where we make a passage through the Hole and on to the Grand Cathedral Cave.

On the return journey the cruise takes its time and meanders through the inner islands. View sandy beaches, beautiful bays and marine wildlife as your skipper gives an informative commentary. Included is an island stopover on beautiful Urupukapuka Island.

As your catamaran docks at the Historic Otehei Bay, enjoy the white sandy beach, picturesque views and its rich archaeological landscape. On the way back you might like to stop off at the quaint seaside village of Russell (New Zealand’s first capital) where you can take some time to wander around and enjoy.

Bay of Islands - Auckland

It’s a good day for exploring today as there are many possibilities for stops on the way down south. At Waipu turn left to Waipu Cove and follow that road down through Langs Bach and Mangawhai. Waipu Cove is the local surf beach in the area.

Further on, at the old Bohemian settlement of Puhoi have a drink and sample some local cheese. A little further south is Waiwera where there are mineral hot pools to bathe and have fun in. Stay in Auckland tonight.

Day 5
Auckland - Waitomo - Rotorua

Continue south on State Highway 1 to the city of Rotorua. On the way stop off at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves (included in the tour price). For over 100 years Waitomo Glowworm Caves have attracted millions of people from all over the world. This evening you will be picked up and taken to the Mitai Village for a unique and unforgettable cultural experience.

Be enthralled by the natural bush setting, see warriors in traditional dress paddle an ancient warrior canoe (waka) down the Wai-o-whiro stream and see glow worms in their natural habitat. See your traditionally cooked hangi meal being lifted from the ground. During the cultural performance, you’ll learn about our past, carvings and ta moko (tattoo art). (D) (2 nights)

Day 6
Rotorua

Rotorua has been known for its geothermal activity for over 150 years now and today you are able to see, feel, smell and hear some of this wonder of nature. At Te Puia, experience the raw power of Te Whakarewarewa geothermal valley with bubbling mud pools, steaming vents and the world famous Pohutu Geyser.

Take a journey into the heart of Maori culture, arts and crafts. Then take a ride on the 8 seater gondola which climbs up the side of Mt Ngongotaha and experience Rotorua’s most spectacular views with Skyline Skyrides. This is a fun, all age, all weather attraction with views of the City and Lake Rotorua.

You can have lunch here at the café or restaurant, and enjoy the fresh air a little more if you decide to ride a cart down the Luge. At the end of the day you can relax at the Polynesian Spa where you have the choice of 7 hot mineral spring pools – or upgrade to some wonderful treatments from the Spa such as the Aix Massage.

Day 7
Rotorua - Auckland

Head north back to Auckland today. You have plenty of time as the jouney is only about 3 hours direct. So take your time and enjoy the scenery or perhaps you’d like to take the opportunity to visit Hobbiton. The movie set from The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit movie series is on picturesque private farmland near Matamata.

There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the farm, which is a working sheep and beef unit. The Hobbiton movie set has been completely rebuilt and will remain as it was seen in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Great tours. Mani was very helpful in arranging tours that fit our trips needs with 3 children. This is now our second holiday using Relaxing Journeys; one to the North Island and one to the South Island. Both great trips and very memorable. We really have appreciated how convenient the hotel locations have been to the key sites.

Thumbs up: suggestions were given, vouchers arranged according to date, instructions were specific regarding collection of car and meeting place for the tours, contact numbers for the different tours were given. To be improved: itinerary is too wordy and can be simplified in a table form with suggested timeline, more suggested pit stops especially for longer drives, the ride to Takapuna could be improved as the pit stops with the toilet and the oil refinery were disappointing, more places to view and experience animals could be included in itinerary. Addresses can be more specific and accurate as we had to Google most of the address to input in the GPS. Addresses for the pit stops could be given, food places can be suggested.

A great holiday which was planned very well by our Tour Consultant. Very happy with our accommodation and even though there was a bit of travelling by car, found the suggested stop offs well worth it. With the beautiful countryside and views on our travels the journey between towns was made more enjoyable and relaxing. We definitely got to see the best parts of the North Island and would not hesitate to use Relaxing Journeys again when we plan our next trip back to New Zealand.

Directions to the hotel for our first night in Auckland would have been helpful as no-one at the airport could give us clear directions. Although the Scenic Auckland was very clean and the staff friendly we encountered noise problems from Queen St - noisy late night revellers and bottles being thrown etc. in the early hours of the morning. We mentioned this to hotel management but they still continued to place us on the Queen St side just on a higher level. This did not solve the problem. Otherwise it was a very enjoyable trip we would recommend, and the service from your end was excellent.

We enjoyed our tour very much. We were disappointed with our hotel in Rotorua. The lift had been broken down for 8 weeks and we were placed on the 4th floor. They recommended that we did not change as there were large numbers of Chinese in the hotel, who they said may be noisy. We are 75 and 77 years old, and it was a bit of an effort to climb the stairs. We did not think we needed to stay in Auckland on three separate occasions. Perhaps there is a city outside of busy Auckland may be better in the middle of the tour.
