Day by Day Tour Itinerary
Kia Ora. Welcome to Queenstown – a walking, bungee and hiking paradise. After making your way through the terminal, through customs and baggage collection, pick up your rental car and travel to your comfortable accommodation. The rest of the day is yours to harness – what will you do first? (2 nights)
It’s time to make memories in Queenstown. Pick and choose from a long list of adventures – from thrilling funyak tours along the Dart River and horse-riding in Glenorchy, to panning for gold in Arrowtown or taking a tour of Lake Wakatipu via the TSS Earnslaw, there is certainly something for every speed. Or a scenic walk may do the trick, exploring the diverse range of stunning trails the region delivers in troves.
High country landscapes and trout fishing rivers on one side and Lake Wakatipu on the other; the road to Te Anau is nothing short of scenic. Take a break when you reach the small town of Kingston – there are a couple of short walks with fantastic results you’ll want to see for yourself. (3 nights)
Get your pulse pumping happily with an easy 11km walk through an ancient beech forest. Beginning on a water taxi from Te Anau to Brod Bay, your guide will be ready and waiting to show you everything you should see about this resplendent track. Gentle on the knees and well maintained, people of all abilities can enjoy the native flora and fauna, as you learn more about biodiversity, conservation and the significance of Fiordland. The track slowly opens into a protective Wildlife Park – view the rare flightless Takahē, native waterfowl, weka, parakeets, tui, kea, and pigeons. The afternoon is free for further exploring on your own.
This 11km return walk has been famously described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘finest walk in the world.’ The Milford Track is internationally acclaimed for its spectacular scenery – expect dramatic alpine views, busy rivers and ancient beech forests to steal your breath and your camera battery.
The guided tour begins with a one-hour lake cruise to the head of Lake Te Anau and the start of the Milford Track. From Glade Wharf, the track follows the Clinton River to Glade House for lunch. Enjoy a 4 – 5 hour leisurely wander on a gentle gradient through forest, grassy flats and wetlands.
Follow your feet back to Queenstown, passing through and onto Wanaka. Although the Crown Range Road requires a steady nerve and a sense of adventure – plus snow chain in winter – the view is well worth this short 72km route. Pause at the lookout, breathe in your surroundings and drive to the historic Cardrona Hotel for a bite to eat, something to drink and the always essential photo. (2 nights)
Cruise the shoreline of Lake Wanaka in air-conditioned comfort before heading into the Matukituki Valley, crossing fords and photo spots along the way. Leave the 4WD and put two legs to work, as your guided walk begins and alpine rainforests emerge above the treeline, framing four glacier faces. Tuck into lunch before exploring more, delving into the valleys of Mt Aspiring National Park. Are you ready for more good news? The walk back to the 4WD is all downhill.
Put Wanaka in your rearview mirror and travel along the banks of the Hawea and Wanaka lakes, before stopping in Makarora for an essential, short walk along the Blue Pools Track nearby. Refreshed by the brisk mountain weather, continue your climb over the Haast Pass, reaching the West Coast – where ancient rainforests tower above you. Continue north to the village of Franz Josef Glacier. (2 nights)
Thrills and chills abound, as we combine a scenic helicopter flight over the Franz Josef Glacier, with a guided walk amongst the ice caves, pinnacles and crevices – this is alpine country as you’ve never seen it. You’ll enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains with plenty of snap-happy opportunities and the chance to learn more about this magnificent glacier.
Your guide chooses the route, ensuring you see only the most spectacular ice formations, leading you into icefall terrain that is usually seen only by experienced mountaineers. With a spotless safety record, rigid assessments, and using exclusive quality equipment, your safety and enjoyment is taken seriously by the folks at Heli-Hike.
After your trek is complete, bathe under a rainforest canopy and climb into the Franz Josef Glacier hot pools for some warm R&R.
Travel north along the bush clad, coastal plain past Hokitika to Greymouth. Turn inland towards the Southern Alps and stop at Arthur’s Pass, the waypoint for a short walk you shouldn’t miss, terminating at the Devil’s Punchbowl, a 100m high waterfall. When you’ve taken all of the pictures your camera can handle, continue across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.
Sadly, your holiday has finished. Today you will return your rental car to the airport and connect with your onward flight.
