Day by Day Tour Itinerary
Pick up your rental car from Nelson Airport or the Picton ferry terminal and then make your way to your accommodation near Motueka. An eco-lodge on 50 acres, there are 5 km of bush tracks rich in native bird life to explore. (3 nights)
Start your day with a full Scenic Cruise from Kaiteriteri to Totaranui and return viewing fur seals and visiting beaches on the way. Select a walk length to suit your fitness and hop off for your unguided hike, stopping for a swim at one of the stunning beaches. See lush native bush, beautiful golden beaches and hear native birdsong.
Your guided tour today takes you exploring in the Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand’s second largest national park and home to over half its plant species. A complete contrast to the Abel Tasman, this is a mountain area where you climb above the treeline for 360 degree views. Fascinating and unique flora as well as geology make this a very interesting day, however far you choose to walk. The alpine region can be easily reached after one and a half hours in time for lunch with the rest of the day spent wandering among granite slabs and the biggest selection of alpine plants to be found in one area in New Zealand.
A scenic drive, through the Motueka Valley and over the Hope saddle brings you to Murchison alongside the Buller River. Murchison and Nelson Lakes have some excellent fishing options. (2 nights)
The fishing in this region is done by walking and wading up stream then fishing for sighted brown trout. Over 25 rivers and streams are located within a 90 minute drive. Your experienced guide will help you get the most out of your fishing experience.
Take your time meandering down the coast today. The road to Greymouth is breathtaking. White capped breakers and rugged rocks on one side, bush-clad mountains on the other side. Stop at Punakaiki to view the amazing Pancake rocks and blowhole. Travel south along the dramatic West Coast, steeped in history dating back to the gold rush era for the 1800’s. Enjoy views of the Southern Alps to the east and the Tasman Sea to the west as you make your way to the Glacier township of Franz Josef. (2 nights)
Combine the thrills of a scenic helicopter flight over the Franz Josef Glacier with a unique guided walk amongst the ice caves, pinnacles and crevices of this pristine, alpine environment.
Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains with plenty of photo opportunities and the chance to learn more about this magnificent glacier. Your guide chooses the route, ensuring you see only the most spectacular ice formations, leading you into icefall terrain that is usually seen only by experienced mountaineers. With a spotless safety record, rigid assessments, and using exclusive quality equipment, your safety and enjoyment is taken seriously by the folks at Heli-Hike.
After your trek is complete, bathe under a rainforest canopy and climb into the Franz Josef Glacier hot pools for some warm R&R.
It is a short drive today so you have plenty of time to stop for a walk around beautiful Lake Matheson with views up to Mt Cook or walk up the valley to the glacier at Fox. Tonight’s accommodation is in the tiny settlement of Bruce Bay right on the beach with views to Mount Cook. Join your host John to catch fish for dinner which Jacqui will expertly prepare for you. Make sure that you book dinner ahead, there are only 3 houses in Bruce Bay!
Travel down the West Coast, alongside braided riverbeds, native forests and roadside waterfalls before climbing up over the Haast Pass and through Mt Aspiring National Park, with its impressive mountains sculpted by glaciers during the Ice Ages. Then follow the shores of Lakes Hawea towards your destination of Wanaka.
Your hosts will be happy to make a reservation at one of Wanaka’s great restaurants for dinner tonight. (3 nights)
Drive up to Makarora and begin a unique 4 hour wilderness adventure, the Siberia Experience, in the Mt Aspiring National Park. Your journey begins with a 25 minute flight that captures stunning views of the Southern Alps, vast rainforests, hanging valleys and dramatic unspoiled beauty. Land in the Siberia Valley to immerse yourself in nature on this unguided journey amongst natural New Zealand World Heritage wilderness before meeting up with your jet boat for a thrilling 30-minute trip back to Makarora.
The day begins with a scenic drive by 4WD air conditioned vehicle around Lake Wanaka, and into the Matukituki valley driving through several fords, stopping for photos along the way. Swing bridge, waterfalls, rainforest, crystal clear mountain streams and glaciers – the Rob Roy Glacier guided Walk has it all!
Your walk begins in the Matukituki valley and you will travel through farmland with sheep and cattle, then across a swing bridge into the alpine rainforest. Emerge above the treeline into the alpine herb fields opposite four glacier faces – a perfect lunch spot and a base for further exploration of this magical valley, the jewel of Mt Aspiring National Park. Following lunch the walk is all downhill back to the car park.
The shortest route to Queenstown is over the Crown Range Road. It’s a challenging drive, but the views are amazing and you’ll probably encounter friendly keas (mountain parrots). More conservative drivers can take the route that runs beside the Clutha River, Lake Dunstan and the Shotover River. The vineyards of the Gibbston area and bungy jumpers at the Kawarau River Bridge are interesting distractions along the way. (3 nights)
Time for some adrenaline with a day’s mountain biking. One hour’s drive through farm land and dirt roads in a 4WD will bring you to the start of your ride. Your guide will suggest the best track for you on the day. From fast flowing farm tracks to single sheep tracks, whichever you choose there will be big views all around.
A journey along the edge of the lake from Queenstown to the head of Lake Wakatipu is the ideal preparation for the splendour of the world-famous Routeburn Track. Your walk begins among towering ancient beech forest, climbing gradually through a 130 million year old magical world, blanketed by forest mosses and ferns, skirting the thundering Routeburn river through the gorge it has carved over the millennia. The woodland eventually parts to reveal the rich grassland of Routeburn Flats, overlooked on all sides by cloud-scraping mountains, some so high they have permafrost and small glaciers.
Enjoy a well-earned lunch surrounded by the grandeur of alpine meadows, meandering streams and majestic snow-capped mountains. On your return you will explore the old forgotten paths of the Maori, as you travel along the original Greenstone trails.
Sadly, your holiday has finished. Make your way to Queenstown airport and return your rental car in time for your onward flight.
