Day by Day Tour Itinerary
Your journey starts in Blenheim – situated in the heart of wine-growing Marlborough. You can either fly into this sunny town from most major airports in New Zealand or you can take the Interislander Ferry from Wellington to Picton and make your won way there.
On arrival you will be met by our representative and transferred to your accommodation leaving the afternoon free for you to explore. In and around Blenheim you’ll find an array of cafes, restaurants, wineries, bars, shops, artisan food outlets and golf courses along with popular walkways along the Taylor River Reserve.
The renowned 71km Queen Charlotte Track offers any hiker a spectacular journey. Discover historic bays, skyline ridges and unsurpassed views of the stunning Marlborough Sounds.
Your guides will collect you from The Peppertree to embark on a boat trip to Motuara Island for a bird sanctuary tour en route to Ship Cove. Ship Cove was a favourite anchorage for Captain Cook during his explorations in the 1770s. Arrive late morning at Ship Cove to begin a 5 hour walk through beautiful native forest. (3 nights)
Today’s four hour coastal walk takes you around the inlet through regenerating native bush to the call of bellbirds, fantails and other New Zealand native birds. Learn from your guide about the history of the area and at the end of the day you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon at Punga Cove resort.
Today you depart Mahana Lodge and return to the ridgeline to continue your hike along the Queen Charlotte Track. A challenging day is ahead wile you are traversing the ridgeline between Mahana Lodge and Torea Bay/ Raetihi Lodge.
Truly grand vistas abound round every corner – a wonderful reward indeed. Those who feel like a day’s rest are treated to a boat ride around the bays of the Queen Charlotte Sound to Raetihi Lodge. Conclude your walk at Coshwed Bay and transfer by waiting water taxi to your accommodation at Raetihi Lodge.
Farewell Raetihi Lodge and ascend to the Queen Charlotte Track once again, enjoying stunning views. Open farmland and a grand native bush section to finish is a fitting finale. Today you return by boat from the Anakiwa Jetty and join your cruise back to Picton to complete your journey. Transfer from Picton back to Blenheim
Transfer to Blenheim airport this morning for your flight south to Queenstown. Collect your rental car at the airport and make your way to Te Anau, best known as the gateway to Fiordland National Park. Relax overlooking the lake or borrow the lodge’s bikes for a short lakefront ride before dinner.
After breakfast, travel through the beautiful Eglinton Valley on your way to the start of the Hollyford Valley. Visit Gunn’s Camp museum before walking alongside the swift clear waters of the Hollyford River beneath the gaze of the mighty Southern Alps, including Mt Tūtoko (2746m) and Mt Madeline (2537m).
As the track undulates gently through native beech forest and beside impressive tumbling waterfalls you’ll re-trace the footsteps of early Māori and pioneer explorers. Enjoy interesting historical tales and interpretation of forest and bird life. A relaxed evening is spent at Pyke Lodge where you can visit the nearby glow-worm colony. (2 nights)
Start the day with a tasty cooked or continental breakfast before visiting Lake Alabaster where you will learn of the history and geology of the area. You’ll have the option of crossing one of Fiordland’s longest swing bridges before taking a short walk to board your jet boat.
Enjoy a scenic ride down the Hollyford River and along Lake McKerrow. After calling in at the early pioneer settlement site of Jamestown, you’ll walk through ancient Podocarp forest amongst native forest giants, some up to 1000 years old. Thunderous surf on the West Coast is a prelude to a bay of boulders where the rare Fiordland Crested penguin is a seasonal visitor. Further on Long Reef plays host to a rookery of native New Zealand fur seals.
This evening you’ll be hosted at Martins Bay Lodge, close to the mouth of the Hollyford River.
After another hearty breakfast you’ll explore Martin’s Bay Spit, a famous landmark separating the powerful Tasman Sea from the Hollyford Valley, and a coastal landscape that’s a world away from the previous days. Learn about lifestyle of the early Māori and their Pounamu trails that pass through the valley.
You’re encouraged to explore the isolated beach and sand dunes in your own time, giving you the chance to reflect on this intrepid journey. Returning to Martins Bay Lodge for lunch, say goodbye to your lodge hosts before boarding your helicopter for a scenic flight along the rugged coast into the truly spectacular and dramatic Milford Sound – marvel at the grandeur of vertical granite walls rising from the sea.
In Milford you’ll be met by your coach driver and travel the impressive Milford Road through the famous Homer Tunnel and journey back to Te Anau.
Sadly your holiday is at an end. Retrace your steps to Queenstown and return your rental car to the airport depot in time for your onward flight.
