Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Nelson

Pick up your rental car from Nelson Airport or the Picton ferry terminal and then make your way to your accommodation near Motueka. An eco-lodge on 50 acres, there are 5 km of bush tracks rich in native bird life to explore. (3 nights)

Day 2
Abel Tasman National Park

Today is at leisure to explore this beautiful region caught between sweeping coastline and the northern edge of the Southern Alps. Nelson is home to diverse communities that have blossomed on rich land in a Mediterranean climate. It is a true lifestyle destination based on adventure, art and nature.

Optional Fly, gather, dine excursion is available. This is a unique trip combining a helicopter ride to a stunning remote location, catching your dinner and then having a top chef prepare your lunch.

Day 3
Abel Tasman National Park

Join the Taranui for “The Best Abel Tasman Day Trip”. Explore the Abel Tasman National Park’s coastline; past Split Apple Rock, Kaiteriteri, Marahau, round golden sandy bays, Adele and Fishermans Islands and on to the Tonga Island seal colony. After boarding the boat (Taranui) at Stephens Bay you cruise around the headland to Split Apple Rock, taking time to enable you to get the best views and photo’s during your scenic cruise. Taranui’s cruise itinerary is flexible so if there is something to see on the day trip, like dolphins riding the bow wave or New Zealand fur seals fishing, then we’ll go take a look. Similarly if there’s a particular bay you want to visit or park feature you want to see, then please do let the skipper know and he’ll try to accommodate your wishes.

After you’ve said goodbye to the seals we find a sheltered bay for a light lunch. You can swim, sea kayak, go ashore for a bush walk, or just relax on board Taranui while we prepare your lunch. We have plenty of snorkelling equipment if you are keen to work up an appetite and kayaks on board for your enjoyment. We provide a delicious platter style lunch with fresh local ingredients. We aim to show you the beauty of New Zealand’s Abel Tasman National Park and the Tonga Island marine reserve in a relaxed and unhurried day with us aboard the Taranui.

Day 4
Abel Tasman National Park - Charleston - West Coast

A lovely drive today as you wind through the Motueka Valley and the Buller Gorge. Stop for lunch at the Bay House café at Cape Foulwind with its walkway among the seal colony. Your accommodation for the next two nights is a private oasis. No live television, no landline, no clocks, but with many small luxuries and a commitment to the environment, it’s the perfect retreat for indulgent relaxation. (2 nights)

Day 5
Charleston - West Coast

The Nile River Rainforest Train takes you through the primeval rain forest and towering limestone cliffs of the Nile River Canyon. After a short climb you enter the enormous Nile River Cave System where you meander around stalactites and stalagmites in the upper dry levels of the cave.

Down in the lower active levels of the cave, float in your tube on the slow moving underground river with only an awe-inspiring display of glow worms for navigation. You emerge from the cave into a remote and untouched world before leaving its tranquillity for the rushing bubbling waters of the low grade Nile River Rapids.

Day 6
Charleston - Bruce Bay

Continue south through Hokitika, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier. Tonight’s accommodation is in the tiny settlement of Bruce Bay right on the beach with views to Mount Cook. Join your host John to catch fish for dinner which Jacqui will expertly prepare for you. Book dinner ahead, there are only 3 houses in Bruce Bay! (2 nights)

Day 7
Glaciers

Today you’ll experience one of the most spectacular glaciers in the region. Start with an exciting scenic flight over the Fox Glacier, landing high up on the glacier between two icefalls. Your landing site on the ice is a remote and exceptionally beautiful part of the glacier. At this stage, your guide outfits you with crampons, specially designed for these ice conditions and you follow the ice steps cut by your guide as you explore the amazing formations and ice caves which are only seen here.

From here you undertake a guided trip on the glacier. Your guide is ‘free guiding’, picking a route as you go and looking for the most spectacular ice formations to show you. Information about glacier processes is offered by the guide, but the panoramic views of the glacier and surrounding mountains are supreme.

Day 8
Bruce Bay - Wanaka

Travel down the West Coast, alongside braided riverbeds, native forests and roadside waterfalls before climbing up over the Haast Pass and through Mount Aspiring National Park, with its impressive mountains sculpted by glaciers during the Ice Ages. Then follow the shores of Lakes Hawea towards your destination of Wanaka.

Your hosts will be happy to make a reservation at one of Wanaka’s great restaurants for dinner tonight. (3 nights)

Day 9
Wanaka

Experience the rugged beauty and solitude of the spectacular high country, with this exclusive 4WD journey exploring an historic New Zealand sheep, cattle and deer farm. Maori and European historic sites, pure mountain air and breath-taking scenery. This journey offers a unique insight into Wanaka’s rich history, heritage and modern-day farming life. Included is an exclusive visit to a private 30,000 acre sheep cattle and deer farm, see inside a sheep-shearing shed, enjoy refreshments at our exclusive hilltop viewpoint high above Lake Wanaka.

Day 10
Wanaka

Wine’s all about relaxing so the accent’s on leisure on this full day immersed in the flavours and sights of Central Otago’s vineyard paradise. It’s an unhurried amble through up to six of Central’s finest, pausing only to admire the ever-present views, savour the unique atmosphere of the arts, crafts and history of Old Cromwell Town and share the unforgettable indulgence that is Carrick vineyard’s legendary gourmet platter lunch. Includes: 4-6 of our favourite Central Otago vineyards, taste up to 6 wines at each vineyard, gourmet platter-style lunch at vineyard restaurant. Visit historic Old Cromwell Town. (B/L)

Day 11
Wanaka - Queenstown

The shortest route to Queenstown is over the Crown Range Road. It’s a challenging drive, but the views are amazing and you’ll probably encounter friendly keas (mountain parrots). More conservative drivers can take the route that runs beside the Clutha River, Lake Dunstan and the Shotover River. The vineyards of the Gibbston area and bungy jumpers at the Kawarau River Bridge are interesting distractions along the way. (2 nights)

Day 12
Queenstown

Ride the back roads, vineyard trails and the Gibbston River Trail on a comfortable and stylish cruiser bike taking in the stunning scenery of the mighty Kawarau River in the Gibbston wine growing region. Along the way you will see vines that grow some of the best Pinot Noir in the world and meet an eclectic bunch of wine makers and vineyard workers as we stop by the cellar door of a selection of small, intimate tasting rooms for a taste of the rather good local wines.

Day 13
Depart Queenstown

Return your rental car to Queenstown airport in time for your onward flight.
