Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Christchurch

Upon arrival at Christchurch airport, you will be personally met by our representative & transferred to your accommodation. Following the 2011 earthquake, Christchurch has re-emerged as a vibrant, ever-changing city. Possessing a stable sunny climate, the city’s parks and gardens are a key attraction year round and are renowned for their beauty, especially in spring. Centred around the willow-lined River Avon, Christchurch is compact and easy to explore, with a refreshingly friendly buzz. The remainder of the day is at leisure to get a taste of what the city has to offer.

Day 2
Christchurch - Wanaka

Take delivery of your rental car this morning. Your scenic drive from Christchurch takes you through Tekapo with views to Mt Cook before arrival into Wanaka for a two night stay. Be sure you make a photo stop at Lake Tekapo, a beautiful turquoise coloured lake. Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of the lake, this is one of the most photographed churches in the world made of stone and sand from around the lake. On arrival in Wanaka stretch your legs with a stroll through the gardens of Lime Tree Lodge or a swim in the pool. (2 nights)

Day 3
Wanaka - Milford Sound - Wanaka

View spectacular mountains and the dramatic landscape of Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks, part of South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. This area is known to Maori as Te Wahipounamu, meaning ‘the place of greenstone’. The scenic flight includes two world heritage national parks the impressive Mount Aspiring, pristine glaciers, the Olivine Ice Plateau, rainforest, alpine lakes, rivers and cascading waterfalls. Fly the full length of Milford Sound before landing and boarding your cruise boat. Cruise the full length of Milford Sound on small and friendly cruise boats or ships. Seals, penguins and dolphins can often be spotted at play. The cruise includes an informative commentary and complimentary tea and coffee.

Your return flight takes in more scenic highlights including the Milford Track, Sutherland Falls (At 580 metres, it’s New Zealand’s highest waterfall and the fifth highest in the world), the Dart River Valley, Glenorchy and Lord of the Rings Locations, before returning to Wanaka.

Day 4
Wanaka - Bruce Bay

Driving north from Wanaka you pass Lakes Hawea before entering the wilderness of Mt Aspiring National Park. Crossing the Haast Pass the scenery changes to dense rainforest, big braided rivers and coastal views. Allow plenty of time for your journey to Bruce Bay so you can enjoy the walks and views on the way. The wild and deserted beach at Bruce Bay gets views to Mt Cook. (2 nights)

Day 5
West Coast Glaciers

Today you’ll experience one of the most spectacular glaciers in the region. Start with an exciting scenic flight over the Fox Glacier, landing high up on the glacier between two icefalls. Your landing site on the ice is a remote and exceptionally beautiful part of the glacier. At this stage, your guide outfits you with crampons, specially designed for these ice conditions and you follow the ice steps cut by your guide as you explore the amazing formations and ice caves which are only seen here. From here you undertake a guided trip on the glacier. Your guide is ‘free guiding’, picking a route as you go and looking for the most spectacular ice formations to show you. Information about glacier processes is offered by the guide, but the panoramic views of the glacier and surrounding mountains are supreme.

Day 6
Bruce Bay - Franz Josef

It’s a short drive north so you have time for an early morning walk around Lake Matheson at Fox. Spend the afternoon soaking and taking a massage in the Glacier Hot Pools. Your accommodation tonight is at Holly Homestead, a heritage building, built in the 1920’s from beautiful native timbers, on the edge of Franz Josef Glacier Town. (2 nights)

Day 7
Franz Josef

We’ve included a boat tour on the Okarito lagoon, a short drive north of Franz Josef. Sit back and relax as you are transported from land to lagoon and beyond into the rainforest waterways to see the birds, plants, trees and landscape that combine to make the Okarito– one of the West Coast’s most accessible, yet incredibly pristine and tranquil areas– so “magic”. The open-air boat moves slowly, allowing a total sensory experience with 360-degree views amongst feeding birds including the graceful Kotuku– Great White heron, Royal Spoonbills, the intrepid godwits from Siberia and Alaska, the leggy Pied Stilts, and many others. Custom built for the Okarito area, the boat will take you into the shallow environs of both lagoon and forest and provides some fabulous photo opportunities of both wildlife and landscapes. The towering Southern Alps, Mount Cook and Mount Tasman and Franz Josef Glacier make for a spectacular backdrop to the coastal and rainforest environment on clear days and a stunning contrast to the wetlands and wading birds feeding on the Okarito Lagoon.

Day 8
Franz Josef - Hokitika

Head further north along the rugged West Coast today to Hokitika. The road is rural but with a wild streak. The farmland is trying to turn back into forest and the beauty of the rivers is raw and primeval. At Ross there’s a goldfield walkway to explore, or enjoy a picnic by the shores of Lake Ianthe. Rimu Lodge is sited on a ridge overlooking the Hokitika River and Southern Alps. (2 nights)

Day 9

Today you can hike in the Hokitika Gorge, visit lakes, shop for greenstone (jade), walk along the beach and collect driftwood or just sit and read a book. Visit the Treetop Walk and café south of Hokitika (extra cost). The walkway, high in the ancient rainforest tree canopy, and a 40 metre spiral tower offer views of Lake Mahinapua, the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps.

Day 10
Hokitika - Depart Christchurch

Leave the West Coast behind today and drive across Arthurs Pass to Christchurch. If you like, you can take the train to Christchurch and leave your rental car in Greymouth so that you can relax and take in the superb mountain pass scenery (additional cost). Here we bid you farewell and hope you leave with many happy memories of your stay in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
