Day by Day Tour Itinerary
Welcome to Auckland! Once you’ve moved through customs, collect your rental car this morning and make your way south to Turangi, the unofficial trout fishing headquarters of New Zealand, for a three night stay.
River Birches lodge is one of the best kept secrets in the central North Island. Nestled directly beside the Tongariro River, it is a perfect base for fly fishing. (3 nights)
Turangi is world renowned for its fly fishing. Your guide will collect you from the lodge for an exciting day exploring the famous Tongariro River, the largest and most important spawning river in the area.
If you have a non-fishing companion travelling with you, we suggest a guided hiking trip over the nearby Tongariro Crossing. There is also a gentle riverside walking and bike trail accessible directly from the lodge. (B/L)
Enjoy a second day fishing the Turangi region with your guide. Lake Taupo is only four kilometres away and the Tauranga-Taupo River (another trout haven) is just to the east. (B/L)
It’s only a short drive today to Rotorua – plenty of time for you to stop and explore along the way. On the shores of Lake Taupo you can stop and visit the mighty Huka Falls.
Continue onwards and see the Aratiatia Rapids – a unique feature of the power generation system on the Waikato River. (2 nights)
Fifteen fishable lakes, a myriad of streams and three different species of trout – Rotorua offers something for everyone. Today your guide will provide you with a personalised fly fishing adventure. (B/L)
Leave your rental car at Rotorua airport and fly to Queenstown (flight is included in your tour cost). On arrival collect your new rental vehicle and make your way to Wanaka, located at the heart of the Southern Lakes District, nestling up against the Alps.
The area is famous for its fine inland climate, beautiful lakes, snow-capped mountains and the vast wilderness of Mount Aspiring National Park. Lime Tree Lodge is set on a ten-acre estate just outside Lake Wanaka, with stunning 360 degree, uninterrupted mountain views. (3 nights)
The Wanaka area has a legion of rivers and backcountry streams, almost all uncrowded, and providing crystal clear conditions for superb fishing, stalking and spotting brown and rainbow trout.
Your fly-fishing guide is a passionate fisherman and excellent teacher: he will take you to the best fishing spots and you’ll be amongst beautiful scenery. (B/L)
The waterways around the Wanaka region are well-known in fishing circles as premium fishing locations and today you can enjoy another day fishing in the region. (B/L)
Today, you will make your way to Te Anau via Queenstown, over the Crown Range Road. It’s a challenging drive, but the views are amazing and you’ll probably encounter friendly keas (mountain parrots) along the way.
Too much to handle? Cautious drivers can take the route that runs beside the Clutha River, Lake Dunstan and the Shotover River. From Queenstown drive through the Devils Staircase on route to Te Anau.
Fiordland Lodge is a masterpiece in log construction, using massive Douglas Fir logs milled from the site. Ron Peacock, one of the lodge owners is an avid fly fisherman and runs Fiordland Guides as well as the lodge. Dine at the lodge tonight. (3 nights)
There are over forty rivers and streams within an hour and a half of Te Anau. They vary from small spring fed streams to moderate sized rivers. The mountains of Fiordland New Zealand are clothed in rich rain forest and here true wilderness fishing is as good as it gets.
Accompanied by your experienced guide, spend the day on the river amongst breathtaking scenery, clear, clean water and pure fresh air. (B/L/D)
Today is free to relax and explore the area. Fiordland is one of the most dramatic and beautiful parts of New Zealand. Absorb the breathtaking treasures of this region by water, air or hiking.
Fiordland National Park is a World Heritage Site and includes Milford, Dusky and Doubtful Sounds. Take a scenic helicopter flight, explore the area on many of the available walks or book a day tour to Milford Sound.
Alternatively, you can simply relax in the comfort of the lodge.
Sadly your holiday is at an end. Retrace your steps to Queenstown and return your rental car to the airport depot in time for your onward flight. Here we bid you farewell.
