Day 1. Auckland – Waitomo – Rotorua
Today your experienced driver guide will collect you from your hotel for the start of your journey to the wonderland of the historic Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Set deep in the heartland of the King Country you will explore the underground labyrinth of ancient limestone caves and formations created over millions of years, and marvel at a galaxy of tiny lights in the famed glow-worm Grotto. We travel south from Auckland through the rich farmland of the Waikato province, following the mighty Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest, past the historic Land War site of Rangiriri and on to Otorohanga and Waitomo Caves.
Following your exploration of the caves we head south and pause at Te Kuiti, the sheep shearing capital of New Zealand, for a light lunch and refreshments before heading on to the Pureora Forest. We stop here to view the last remnants of an extensive podocarp forest and take an easy walk amongst ancient Totara and Rimu trees that once covered most of the central North Island. For those who are able, we can climb the 12 metre high tower giving you an entirely different perspective of life in the forest canopy – a great spot for observing native birds such as the Kereru, Kakariki and Kaka.
Back on the road we travel through rolling farmland and pass alongside picturesque Lake Whakamaru before arriving at Orakei Korako, a hidden valley where steam rises above silica terraces on the edge of the Waikato River. We can view boiling pools and geysers and an extremely rare geothermal cave set amongst the native bush of the area.
We then move on to Rotorua where you will stay at the 4 star Millennium Rotorua. This evening enjoy a magical Maori experience in a truly stunning venue followed by a succulent hangi feast cooked to perfection in a pit of traditional stone.
Stay: Millennium Hotel Rotorua (D)
Day 2. Rotorua – Hobbiton – Auckland
Drive through Rotorua’s historic Government Gardens and around the waterfront before you leave this morning. Climb up and over the Mamaku Volcanic Plateau today and through beautiful native forest then the Fitzgerald Glade into the South Waikato area. On arrival at the Shire’s Rest, Your tour starts with a drive through the picturesque working sheep farm with spectacular views across the Kaimai Ranges towards the Hobbiton Movie Set.
Your experienced and knowledgeable tour guide will escort you through the ten-acre site of where the LOTR movie set used to be. Your guide will explain all about what was needed to create the Hobbiton set and tell stories about what went on during filming. He or she will also happily answer any questions you might have. The Hobbiton movie set has been returned to its natural state after filming was completed. However, hobbit holes and some structures from the film set are still in place.
After your tour, continue further north to reach the market garden area of Pukekohe then travel on the Southern Motorway to reach Auckland. Rotorua
