Tour Itinerary

Today your driver guide will pick you up from your hotel and together we will set out to discover the historic Waitomo Glowworm Caves and the delights of Rotorua, New Zealand’s Thermal Wonderland.

During your visit to Waitomo, set deep in the heartland of the King Country, you will explore the underground labyrinth of ancient limestone caves and formations created over millions of years, and marvel at a galaxy of tiny lights in the famed Glow-worm Grotto.

We travel south from Auckland through rich farmland of the Waikato Province, following the mighty Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest, past the historic Maori land war site at Rangiriri and through the small town of Ngaruawahia, home of the Maori queen, to Otorohanga and Waitomo.

Following your cave exploration we will head South East and travel through the forest parks of the Mamaku Ranges and gradually down into Rotorua, steaming away on the lake edge.

We will stop in the beautiful Government Gardens and stroll around for a while, unwinding from our drive, and have a light lunch in the Museum Café. Moving on we visit Te Puia, including Maori Arts & Crafts and Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, home of the famous Pohutu Geyser and boiling mud pools. There is also an opportunity to see the kiwi, our national bird, in the specially created “Kiwi House.”

As people have very different sightseeing requirements you now have the option of: (at your cost)

  • Agrodome – An entertaining Kiwi Farm Show to give you an idea of our farming methods.
  • A visit to Rainbow Springs Nature Park. A chance for you to browse through a natural New Zealand experience.
  • A ride up Mt Ngongataha on a gondola to have a thrilling ride on a four wheeled luge wending its way down part of the mountain with Skyline Skyrides.
  • A relaxing dip in the thermal waters at the Polynesian Spa.

Whatever you choose to do you can be assured of a unique experience in the heartland of Maori culture. Sit back, relax and allow your tour host to show and tell you about the history and culture of this fascinating area. If you wish to challenge your spirit, activities and attractions abound, with something to satisfy everyone.

Later in the day, perhaps after relaxing in a thermal pool, we will head back to Auckland, following the setting sun as we pass through the open lush fields and rolling hills of Matamata arriving back at your hotel in the early evening.

We really enjoyed our tour and Kerry was great. Unfortunately the heating in the van wasn't working so I was cold most of the day! Also thought if the tickets were prearranged this would have saved time at particular venues. Apart from those minor things we were impressed overall with the day.

We had a limited amount of time and our guide was very good about making sure we saw everything we could see in that time. He was very well informed about the culture, history and we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. A very good value for our money and highly recommended.

Glowworm caves were more impressive than we expected, Te Puia was as expected, and Polynesian Spa less than expected. We had some car trouble on our trip (a holiday in NZ) which complicated matters because no repair service was open to help. My husband assisted our driver to duck tape a hose in the engine, so that with a prayer we could return to Auckland.

We took a private tour so we could do things that we wanted to at our own pace. A fun, informative, relaxing day went perfectly. Thank you!

We had a wonderful time with Kerry on our tour to Waitomo & Rotorua. He was waiting for us at 7am in front of our hotel and we had a nice view of the countryside on our way to Waitomo. My husband has an interest in horticulture and Kerry was very knowledgeable about the trees and plants. We arrived just in time for the 1st tour of the glow worm caves and we got to see a glow worm snag a moth!! After the tour we were off to Rotorua. Even though the weather was a bit rainy we stopped at lots of interesting places and had a most delicious lunch. We ended out tour at the Agrodome, just in time for the last show of the day. Perfect planning on Kerry's part! On the way home, Kerry took a quick side trip to Hobbitton after hearing that we were planning a Lord of the Rings tour the next week. We arrived back in Auckland just after sunset. A warm thank you to Kerry for a great day full of sights, but we never felt rushed. Just a fun and relaxed day.

Second time using Relaxing Journeys. Rest assured that I'd hire them a third time. Our Airport transfer in Sydney was perfect! The Blue Mountain trip was fantastic. Auckland tours and transfers made our New Zealand visit one to remember. Everything I contracted for was received, and more. Everything was perfect for our group of 8. Drivers were professional, friendly, punctual and intelligent. Prices were half of the cruise ship rates, with personalization that couldn't be matched. Thanks to Craig, Marcos, and Kerry for fantastic service. I'll be back. Kia Ora
