Hobbiton

Discover Middle-earth on picturesque farmland near Matamata in the North Island of New Zealand, where you can visit the Hobbiton movie set from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy and the recently released trilogy – ‘The Hobbit’ in a fascinating two-hour guided tour. The closest town/city is Rotorua.

The set has been completely rebuilt and will remain as it was seen in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the movie set, which is still a working sheep and beef farm.

As the Hobbiton Movie Set is located on a real New Zealand farm, you also have theopportunity to cuddle and bottle feed the pet lambs. You can relax and soak up the unique atmosphere with a great cup of coffee or a light meal in The Shires Rest Cafe.

The Geen Dragon Inn (a complete replica of the Green Dragon Inn from the Movie) was completed on the 1st December 2012 and your guided tour includes complimentary Hobbiton Brew inside.

History
HobbitonWhen Peter Jackson spotted the Alexander Farm during an aerial search of the North Island for the best possible locations to film The Lord of The Rings film trilogy, he immediately thought it was perfect for Hobbiton. Nevertheless, a lot of work was still needed to be completed before it was up to the director’s high standards.

Site construction started in March 1999 and filming commenced in December that year, continuing for three months.
