The Morris & James Matakana Showroom is a visual feast of colour. Just one hour north of Auckland in the heart of Matakana Coast Wine Country, a visit to Morris & James makes the perfect day out.
Morris & James is famous for its rich, vibrantly coloured glazes. The translucence and depth of the glaze evoke a sense of seeing through a stream of pure colour. In addition, a new Spring Collection will be released each September which will expand the M&J range to suit a wide range of individual style.
All products are individually handcrafted by local artisans in the pottery’s workshops. The extensive range of products on sale at Matakana includes not only the standard designs available through stockists but also special one-off and trial pieces.
Morris & James offers a colour matching service and can adapt designs to meet individual customer requirements.
It was in 1977 that Anthony Morris returned to his native New Zealand from running a successful pottery in Suffolk, England. Although his background was in stoneware, he wanted to manufacture terracotta – the porous orange coloured ware made from iron-rich clays.
He settled with his family in the beautiful Matakana Valley, near Warkworth and began working a clay deposit on the property which pioneer brickmakers had discovered a hundred years before. The products, which formed the original base of the business, were large garden pots and hand-made floor tiles.
In the mid 1980s, brightly coloured glazes were introduced on pots and wall tiles and later hand-decorated platters and wall decorations. In 1994 a café-bar was added to the business. The café uses, wherever possible, products made in the adjacent pottery.
