Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Auckland - Internal Flight - Christchurch

Welcome to Auckland! On arrival you’ll move to the domestic terminal and board your domestic flight to Christchurch. The price of the flight is included in your tour price. If you’d prefer, you can request an overnight stay at an Auckland airport hotel and we’ll book your domestic flight for the next day.

On arrival in Christchurch, collect your luggage and be transferred to your accommodation. What should you do with the rest of the day? Take it slow, sit back and relax, we suggest punting down the River Avon through the stunning Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

Day 2
Christchurch - TranzAlpine Train - Franz Josef

This morning you will board the TranzAlpine Train for one of the world’s great scenic train trips that will take you across the patchwork farmland of the Canterbury Plains before a slow climb into the Southern Alps. From here you will marvel at views of the stunning Waimakiriri River gorge and alpine scenery on a series of breathtaking viaducts.

After a brief stop at Arthur’s Pass you will enter one of New Zealand’s longest tunnels, the Otira Tunnel and subsequently descend through a deep valley of sub tropical rainforest over a broad shallow river into the small town of Greymouth. Join your coach in Greymouth and travel through Hokitika to the glacier region. Stay 2 nights at Franz Josef Glacier. (2 nights)

Day 3
Franz Josef

Today you have a whole day at leisure. Perhaps enjoy a guided walk, a heli-hike or a scenic flight from the Franz Josef township. If you’d prefer a relaxing day, head to the Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools that are nestled amongst the lush rainforest of the glacier country. Or meander through the village where you will find a wonderful selection of gifts, artwork, merchandise and cafes.

Day UP
Glaciers Upgrade Package

Treat yourself and upgrade your accommodation in Franz Josef to the 5 star Te Waonui Forest Retreat, a luxury lodge hotel nestled amongst native West Coast rainforest. Our upgrade package includes luxurious accommodation, dinner on the first night – an indulgent 5 course degustation menu in The Canopy Restaurant and a la carte breakfast both mornings. We’ve also included a stunning Franz Josef Heli Hike to help you make the most of your time in the region. Ask us for a price!

Day 4
Franz Josef - Queenstown

Travelling south your journey will take you through coastal forest and windswept sand dunes, crossing Haast Pass on New Zealand’s longest single lane bridge. Travelling through Wanaka sitting at the foot of the Southern Alps your next stop is Queenstown, which is the Southern Hemisphere’s premiere four season alpine lake resort town. (2 nights)

Day 5
Milford Sound

It’s an early departure today as your coach follows the southern arm of Lake Wakitipu to Lumsden, and onward to Lake Te Anau. The scenery changes dramatically from tussock covered grasslands to glacier hewn valleys as you enter the Eglington Valley and travel through the breath taking man-made Homer Tunnel before reaching Milford Sound.

Upon arrival at Milford Sound, board your launch for a spectacular cruise where you will see the wonders of Mitre Peak, glacier scarred rock walls that rise 1,200m vertically from the sea, and waterfalls that tumble from hanging valleys and crash into the Sound far below.

On completion of your cruise you will return to Queenstown by coach arriving in the evening. (L)

Day UP
Milford Sound Return Flight Upgrade Package (From NZ395*pp)

Upgrade your itinerary to include a return scenic flight to Queenstown, taking in the magnificent views of the alps, glaciers, lakes and forests of Fiordland National Park – a quick and convenient way to return to Queenstown. (Duration 35mins)

The flight shaves off approximately 4 hours off a return by coach. It is however very weather dependent, so if the weather doesn’t play ball, then you will need to return by coach and we will refund the upgrade price.

Day 6
Queenstown - Mt Cook

Leaving Queenstown you will soon reach picturesque Lake Hayes and travel through Kawarau Gorge, home of award winning wineries as well as the famous Kawarau Bungy bridge. You will travel past the township of Cromwell and its many orchards before crossing Lindis Pass and into the Mackenzie Country. Hydro-electricity canals and glacier fed lakes will guide you into the Mt Cook National Park. Here you will find Aoraki Mt Cook – New Zealand’s tallest mountain.

Day 7
Mt Cook - Christchurch

This morning is at your leisure. Hike around one of the walking tracks, take one of the scenic flights to get up close to Mt Cook and the Southern Alps’ magnificent glaciers. You also have time to explore the Tasman Glacier by the terminal lake. This afternoon you’ll travel down the Tasman Valley past Glentanner Park as well as Lakes Pukaki and Tekapo where you can view the Church of the Good Shepherd by the lake shore.

The altar window offers awe inspiring views of the lake and mountains of the Mackenzie Country. The coach then continues on towards Fairlie. Continue your journey through diverse farmland and descend to cross the Canterbury Plains before arriving in Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city.

Day 8
Christchurch - Auckland

Today you will be met at your Christchurch accommodation and transferred to the airport for your included domestic flight to Auckland. From Auckland you may choose to stay an extra night at one of the airport hotels, or you can organise your flight home to link up with your arrival back in Auckland. Have a safe trip home!

We LOVED our trip! Marie did a fabulous job, and would HIGHLY recommend you all to others. The only recommendations would be, to warn travelers that in Greymouth the transfer to the Franz Josef bus was very confusing. It was an Intercity bus not marked Franz Josef (only Fox); and the bus driver was not helpful (unlike all other New Zealanders we met who were wonderful). Also, if we were to do it again. We would choose our day " off" between the two days of very long bus rides. We LOVED Milford Sound, had gorgeous weather, and our time in Queenstown was beautiful. All in all, we loved the South Island, and are hopeful to return one day.

Great arrangement. All the selected motels are located in the city central. Good transport arrangement. Save more time and no need to wait and find the destination. If I have more time than will be great, I love the places in the South Island.

Everything went smoothly. All the coaches and the drivers commentary were excellent. My only regret is that we could not go to Lake Matheson from Franz Josef because there was no transport available. I think if I were to do this tour again I would hire a car from the town nearest to Franz Josef to get around Franz Josef, Fox and Lake Matheson. I did Google for car rentals but there were none available for the time.

Thank you for organising our tour. Everything went to the plan that you put together. We were picked up on time every time and all the drivers were very polite and helpful. We had a amazing time in New Zealand such a beautiful country. Thank you for arranging a room with a view at Mt. Cook - we were delighted. The trans-Alpine train was a experience we will never forget. The weather was good for us in the South Island - didn't need any thermals. We would recommend your company to anyone who is visiting New Zealand in the future. Once again thank you for helping to make our trip unforgettable.

Everything was perfect. We were so impressed with the arrangements and all the pick ups on time. All the bus drivers were good and helpful and gave us interesting running commentaries. Accommodation was great except in Punga Grove where the double bed was upstairs and we opted to sleep downstairs. Our problem not yours! We did like the locality and the fact we could walk everywhere. Tour was a bit hectic but again our choice to fit in as much as possible. We also had to be evacuated from Kingsgate in Dunedin in the middle of the night for a fire scare and got very cold standing around outside. Again not your fault!

My Dad and I had an incredibly wonderful time in the South Island thanks to Toni and Relaxing Journeys. Everything went smoothly from booking to arriving back in Auckland. Toni was very friendly and helpful. She listened to our request and customised the tour for us. I also like the voucher book - easy and convenient to use. However, we were a bit disappointed with the included breakfasts in Franz Josef, the hotel in Queenstown and the hotel's restaurant at Mt Cook. It would have been better if we had known in advance we would have been given breakfast boxes, instead of proper meals, in Franz Josef and there would have been only one restaurant available for dinner at Mt Cook. I also wish I had more time to spend in Queenstown, Lake Wanaka and Lake Tekapo. They are all so beautiful. On the whole, it was a great trip. I will definitely ask Relaxing Journeys to help me organise my trip again!

Had an absolutely amazing trip! Relaxing Journeys was extremely helpful and Toni assisted me during the trip when certain excursions were cancelled due to weather. She also modified my tour for an extra day in Queenstown when she learned I had an extra travel day. Truly an unforgettable experience and extremely easy with this booking company.

The only event that we thought a bit below par was the lunch cruise in Rotorua - OK, it was windy cool and raining, but the boat, lunch and service seemed a bit tired. Only once did we have to phone up about transport; the shuttle from hotel to bus in Rotorua didn't show up, but SuperShuttle called a paid-for taxi for us, so that ended well. We especially liked our stay in Queenstown, a very nice hotel in a great place. Dining options and the gondola ride were memorable. Other standouts were the Sky City in Auckland, the Quest in Cathedral square, Christchurch, largely for the location, and the TranzAlpine train. We also enjoyed the hot springs in Franz Joseph and Rotorua. All in all, we wished it could have gone on longer.
