Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Christchurch

Welcome to Christchurch, gateway to the South Island. Christchurch’s rebuild is underway after the earthquake in 2011 and visitors are welcome to experience the new ‘Transitional City’ to its fullest. Stroll along the Avon River and enjoy the new cafes and bars that have reopened recently. Cathedral Square is open & the fresh Transitional Square has been fitted out with large colourful artworks, plants, interpretation panels, theatre space and seating as well as an information booth for residents and visitors.

Day 2
Christchurch - TranzAlpine - Franz Josef

This morning you will board the TranzAlpine Train for one of the world’s great scenic train trips that will take you across the patchwork farmland of the Canterbury Plains before a slow climb into the Southern Alps. From here you will marvel at views of the stunning Waimakiriri River gorge and alpine scenery on a series of breathtaking viaducts. After a brief stop at Arthur’s Pass you will enter one of New Zealand’s longest tunnels, the Otira Tunnel and subsequently descend through a deep valley of sub tropical rainforest over a broad shallow river into the small town of Greymouth. Join your coach in Greymouth and travel through Hokitika to Franz Josef Glacier arriving in the early evening. If you have a spare day we’d recommend an extra night at Franz to allow time to fully experience the region.

Day 3
Franz Josef - Queenstown

Early this morning travelling south your journey will take you through coastal forest and windswept sand dunes, crossing Haast Pass on New Zealand’s longest single lane bridge. Travelling through Wanaka sitting at the foot of the Southern Alps your next stop is Queenstown, which is the Southern Hemisphere’s premiere four season alpine lake resort. (2 nights)

Day 4
Queenstown

Today is completely at your leisure to enjoy the many sights of this alpine resort situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Queenstown offers something for everyone – you can enjoy the quiet beauty and tranquility of this mountain retreat and enjoy several walking trails in the town area. For sheer excitement there is white-water rafting, helicopter rides, the famous jet boats, bungy jumping to pump your adrenalin, and offroad 4WD tours with plenty of river crossings. There are cruises on the lake and a visit to a high country sheep station, and wine tasting tours. You can visit nearby Arrowtown where the main street has been preserved since the 1860’s gold rush days and you can try your luck and pan for gold in the adjacent Shotover River.

Day 5
Queenstown - Mt Cook

Leaving Queenstown you will soon reach picturesque Lake Hayes and travel through Kawarau Gorge, home of award winning wineries and the famous Kawarau Bungy bridge. You will travel past the township of Cromwell and its many orchards before crossing Lindis Pass and into the Mackenzie Country. Hydro-electricity canals and glacier fed lakes will guide you into the Mount Cook National Park. Here you will find Aoraki Mount Cook; New Zealand’s tallest mountain.

Day 6
Mt Cook - Christchurch

This morning is at your leisure. Hike around one of the walking tracks; take one of the scenic flights to get up close to Mount Cook and Southern Alps’ magnificent glaciers. You also have time to explore the Tasman Glacier by the terminal lake. This afternoon you’ll travel down the Tasman Valley past Glentanner Park and Lakes Pukaki and Tekapo where you can view the Church of the Good Shepherd by the lake shore. The altar window offers awe inspiring views of the lake and mountains of the Mackenzie Country. The coach then continues on towards Fairlie. Continue your journey through diverse farmland and descend to cross the Canterbury plains before arriving in Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city.

Day 7
Depart Christchurch

Sadly your trip has come to an end. We hope that you have thoroughly enjoyed your experiences in New Zealand. Today you will be met at your accommodation and transferred to the airport for your onward journey. Have a safe trip home.

It was a little more bus time than I originally expected. Wished there was a bit more time in Franz Josef. All in all it was a great trip though. Really enjoyed the train. Mt. Cook and accommodations were excellent.

Should recommend tourist to stay at least 3 nights in Queenstown. Arrival in Franz Josef should be early to provide ample time to enjoy the attraction there.

We had a very good time and we enjoy the trip very much and the arrangement both transport and accommodation was superb. We had a good time riding on TranzAlpine, went around Queenstown, Milford Sound tour, Mount Cook with a beautiful scenery all along the way. However the nature was not very friendly. Past midnight when we were about to leave Christchurch we were woken up with a sudden shake up. Though it is not devastated, but it was quite frightening. The other unfriendly welcome was the rain, it was raining when we arrived in Franz Josef and keep on raining all night even when we left Franz Josef for Queenstown. Again we we arrived at Mount Cook, it was raining all through the night. However when we woke up we found out that there was a light snow in the night. We enjoy the beautiful scenery. Other improvement may be the internet connection, we found at Aotea Motel (on the first night) and Punga Grove there was no connection. Since we took the bus, sometimes we could not take a good picture of the beautiful scenery, especially passing through Haast Pass.
