Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Auckland - Internal Flight - Christchurch

Welcome to Auckland! On arrival you’ll move to the domestic terminal and board your domestic flight to Christchurch. The price of the flight is included in your tour price. If you’d prefer, you can request an overnight stay at an Auckland airport hotel and we’ll book your domestic flight for the next day. On arrival in Christchurch you’ll be transferred to your accommodation.

Day 2
Christchurch - TranzAlpine Train - Franz Josef

This morning you will board the TranzAlpine Train for one of the world’s great scenic train trips that will take you across the patchwork farmland of the Canterbury Plains before a slow climb into the Southern Alps. From here you will marvel at views of the stunning Waimakiriri River gorge and alpine scenery on a series of breathtaking viaducts. After a brief stop at Arthur’s Pass you will enter one of New Zealand’s longest tunnels, the Otira Tunnel and subsequently descend through a deep valley of sub tropical rainforest over a broad shallow river into the small town of Greymouth. Join your coach in Greymouth and travel through Hokitika to the glacier region. Stay 2 nights Franz Josef Glacier. (2 nights)

Day 3
Glaciers

Today you have a whole day at leisure. Perhaps enjoy a guided walk, a heli-hike or a scenic flight from the Franz Josef township. If you’d prefer a relaxing day, head to the Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools that are nestled amongst the lush rainforest of the glacier country or meander through the village where you will find a wonderful selection of gifts, artwork, merchandise and cafes.

Day UP
Glaciers Upgrade Package

Treat yourself and upgrade your accommodation in Franz Josef to the 5 star Te Waonui Forest Retreat, a luxury lodge hotel nestled amongst native West Coast rainforest. Our upgrade package includes luxurious accommodation, dinner on the first night – an indulgent 5 course degustation menu in The Canopy Restaurant, and a la carte breakfast both mornings. We’ve also included a stunning Franz Josef Heli Hike to help you make the most of your time in the region. (2 nights)

Day 4
Franz Josef - Queenstown

Travelling south your journey will take you through coastal forest and windswept sand dunes, crossing Haast Pass on New Zealand’s longest single lane bridge. Travelling through Wanaka sitting at the foot of the Southern Alps your next stop is Queenstown, which is the Southern Hemisphere’s premiere four season alpine lake resort. (2 nights)

Day 5
Milford Sound Cruise & Tour

It’s an early departure today as your coach follows the southern arm of Lake Wakitipu to Lumsden, and onward to Lake Te Anau. The scenery changes dramatically from tussock covered grasslands to glacier hewn valleys as you enter the Eglington Valley and travel through the breath taking man-made Homer Tunnel before reaching Milford Sound. Upon arrival at Milford Sound, board your launch for a spectacular cruise where you will see the wonders of Mitre Peak, glacier scarred rock walls that rise 1,200m vertically from the sea, and waterfalls that tumble from hanging valleys and crash into the Sound far below. On completion of your cruise you will return to Queenstown by coach arriving in the evening. (L)

Day UP
Milford Sound Return Flight Upgrade Package (NZ $395pp)

Return to Queenstown on a scenic flight taking in magnificent views of the alps, glaciers, lakes and forests of Fiordland National Park – a quick and convenient way to return to Queenstown. (Duration 35mins) The flight shaves off approximately 4 hours off a return by coach. It is however very weather dependent, so if the weather doesn’t play ball, then you will need to return by coach and we will refund the upgrade price.

Day 6
Queenstown - Mt Cook - Christchurch

Depart Queenstown this morning and travel north through the historic gold mining region of the Kawarau Gorge, pass through the dramatic Lindis Pass into the Mackenzie Country. Hug the shores of Lake Pukaki before arriving at the majestic Aoraki/Mt Cook Village. This region is breathtaking and full of opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. Enjoy an optional scenic helicopter or ski plane flight (own expense), explore the treasures of New Zealand’s mountaineering history at the Sir Edmund Hillary Centre or relax over a three course lunch at the famous Hermitage Hotel (not included). This afternoon you will continue north to the glacial fed, turquoise blue Lake Tekapo where you can take the opportunity to appreciate the majestic scenery of the Southern Alps and view the solitary Church of the Good Shepherd. Continue your journey north through the vast patchwork of the Canterbury Plains before arriving at your final destination, Christchurch.

Day 7
Christchurch - Auckland

Today you will be met at your Christchurch accommodation and transferred to the airport for your included domestic flight to Auckland. From Auckland you may choose to stay an extra night at one of the airport hotels, or you can organise your flight home to link up with your arrival back in Auckland. Have a safe trip home!

Everything ran smoothly and according to plan. All the motels were very nice, however we found the Bella Vista in Queenstown was out of the way. If we had more time to spend in New Zealand we would have added stopovers in other cities because some of the bus rides were really long. All bus drivers were fabulous and knowledgeable and we learned so much from them. That was exactly what we were hoping for. All in all, our trip was one of a lifetime and we will definitely contact Relaxing Journeys in the future when we decide to go back. New Zealand should be on everyone's bucket list and we were so happy to have such an enjoyable vacation.

We had an amazing time. The tour was quick enough to fit in our busy work schedules and allowed us to see the top sights. The days were packed full but gave us the opportunity to see many different areas. The glacier upgrade in Franz Josef was definitely worth it. We were impressed by the accommodations. All of the people were welcoming and friendly. We would love to return in the future!

Wonderful trip! Well planned and scheduled tours were timely with minimal wasted time. Accommodations were outstanding, although the Novotel at Queenstown could use a little updating in the bathroom and the carpets definitely needed cleaned. Tour bus guides were knowledgeable and very accommodating. Intercity bus drivers could use some customer service training, but I'm sure they are not expected to provide commentary to passengers. One in particular was lacking in social skills, but that is no fault of your company. Supershuttle drivers were very friendly, but not always on time, making for some stressful moments arriving at our destinations in a timely manner. Arrival time for the train was probably not adequate. Our group of 4 (two couples) were not scheduled as a group traveling together in several instances, so possibly better coordination with the reservation staff would be helpful.

I used Relaxing Journeys after my sister had used them 2 years ago. I found Mani Fagundes very easy to work with, just one phone call and the rest was via email to plan our trip. He customized the trip to suit our dates and requirements and those of another friend who was also traveling with us. The accommodations in most places were great, and pick up and transfer for all parts were right on target. The only comment I would make is the food on the Milford sound cruise buffet was pretty bad, even though we had asked for vegetarian food when we called to confirm the day prior, received Japanese bento boxes with burgers! And the guide could not help. You may be better off bringing sandwiches and drinks with you.

Mantra Marina apartments in Queenstown were large, modern and in a beautiful location, but the daily maid service appeared to be sloppy (they looked like students working in the summer and often forgot soap, towels etc). Sky city Grand hotel in Auckland was great. The Camelot motor lodge in Christchurch was old in decor and looks but the staff were great. The trip to Christchurch from Queenstown via Mt Cook was very nice and the driver quite knowledgable. The one day wine/walking tour in Queenstown was also lovely.

The trip was great, just not long enough, so a longer return trip is on the cards in the next 2 years. The train trip was a highlight as was the 1/2 day glacier walk. Fox Glacier is a great little town and we realy enjoyed our 2 nights there. Queenstown is a full on place, I have never seen so many tourists from all parts of the world in one place. We had a great time there doing the Gondala trip and luge, Shotover jet boats, Arrowtown, Funyak tour (another highlight) and the BBQ lunch trip on the Earnslaw. The only disapointment was the road closure, so no Milford trip. It was the first time we had done an independent bus tour and we were impressed with how smoothly it all went. The voucher system works realy well, all we had to do was be on time for our pick ups and everything else just fell into place. All the accomodation was clean, comfortable and conveniently located. We were talking to a couple from the USA who have travelled a lot and they said there is no place like NZ anywhere else in the world, it is truly a beautiful place. Thanks for the prompt credit of the Milford trip, sometimes it takes forever to get refunds.

Good tour. Everything ran on time, pre bookings and voucher system worked really well. The accommodation was excellent, the motels/hotels were all very comfortable, clean and in very convenient locations. Your consultants knowledge of NZ was very good and the suggestions made to help us build the tour to suit or requirements were very usefull. I would be happy to use Relaxing Journeys again.
