Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Auckland

Welcome to Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city and a hub for shopping and dining. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your accommodation. Enjoy the opportunity to explore this fascinating city. Auckland has so much to offer, from deserted islands just off the coast, lush native bush out west, and sophisticated inner city streets ideal for shopping and dining. Take some time to explore Auckland’s vibrant waterfront this afternoon, and even better if time permits add an extra day in Auckland to experience a slice of what this city has to offer.

Day 2
Auckland - Bay of Islands

This morning you will depart from central Auckland travelling north through spectacular scenery of native forests and sub-tropical bush to the foreshores of the National Maritime Park. On arrival at the small seaside township of Paihia in the Bay of Islands, you will visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds for a unique insight into New Zealand’s early history. (2 nights)

Day 3
Bay of Islands - Hole in the Rock Cruise

This morning make your way to the Paihia wharf to board your morning cruise which will take in the inner and outer islands of the Bay to the beautiful scenery of Cape Brett. Observe a variety of marine wildlife – seals, dolphins, penguins and other sea and bird life – that are often viewed from the vessel. Weather permitting, the crew will steer the vessel through the ‘Hole in the Rock’, presenting stunning photo opportunities. On returning to dry land you may wish to disembark at the pretty town of Russell, New Zealand’s first capital, and return to Paihia by ferry later in the day.

Day 4
Bay of Islands - Auckland - Rotorua

This morning your coach will depart Paihia for your journey south to Rotorua. Sit back and enjoy the drive through the north’s delightful rural and coastal landscape and country towns. On arrival in Auckland, you will have a chance to stretch your legs and grab a bite to eat before re-boarding the coach to Rotorua. Head south into the the fertile agricultural basin of the Waikato region, arriving in the city of Rotorua in the late afternoon. (If you have time you might like to add an extra night in Auckland here to break up the journey – please request this with your Tour Consultant.) (2 nights)

Day Day 5
Rotorua

This morning you will experience Maori culture and the amazing thermal wonderland at Te Puia. Te Puia is also home to the Arts and Crafts Institute where the ancient teachings of Maori ancestors have been preserved and continue to thrive. Continue on to the Rainbow Springs Nature Park, an attraction like no other. Set in 22 acres of beautiful native trees and streams you will see a huge variety of New Zealand’s most precious inhabitants including the Kiwi Conservation Centre. New Zealand’s thriving agricultural industry is on show at the Agrodome, where you will witness a sheep shearing display and sheep dog trials. Tonight you will enjoy a Maori Village Experience and Hangi & Concert. (D)

Day 6
Rotorua - Waitomo - Auckland

After an early morning departure from Rotorua you’ll be travelling west through lush farmland towards Waitomo. Enjoy a guided tour through the world famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves with their amazing stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone formations. After the tour you will continue on to Auckland arriving in the city mid-afternoon.

Day 7
Depart Auckland

Your tour to our shores has come to an end. We hope that you have thoroughly enjoyed your experiences in the Bay of Islands and Rotorua. Today you will be met at your accommodation and transferred to the airport for your onward journey.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to New Zealand. We loved the country and loved the people. Relaxing Journeys helped us choose a tour that ended up being perfect for us. Originally, I wanted to see as much of the country as possible, but Toni convinced me that it would be a hectic trip based on the time we had available, because we wanted time to relax as well. We had several days when we were on our own, and we enjoyed those days as much as the days that were planned out for us. Overall, it was a great trip!

We have never traveled this way before and were not sure how we would like it. It was very easy and not a single hitch along the way with tickets, pick up, airport meeting. We liked that we did not need to drive, yet had flexibility in our plans.

Heritage Hotel Auckland - Great location; shower got floor very wet. Drive to Paihia had good narration. Waitangi Treaty House and guide very good. Scenic Hotel Paihia - room very well equipped and laid out. Hole in the Rock Cruise - very enjoyable. Drive from Paihia to Rotorua - very long day and rather boring. Millenium Hotel Rotorua - bathroom had inadequate shelves for anything. Rotorua morning sightseeing - pretty interesting. Roturua Mitai Village - even hokier than I had imagined it might be, but okay. Rotorua to Auckland via Waitomo - Waitomo was interesting but not sure if worth the trip/time. Tour organization was excellent. Every operator had our names and was on time. Very well put together for such short notice.

We really did enjoy the trip overall. All of the pick ups and drop off went smoothly in addition to all the paperwork being well taken care of at all the hotels. Just a couple of things to consider. 1. Day 3: when we traveled from Bay of Island to Rotorua was one very Looooong day. it would have been nice to cut the travel time in half with another stop off in Auckland or another mid point city for a night. (Ed. You are right - its a long day travelling, and we have similar itineraries that do provide an overnight stop, but this adds another day and additional cost to the itinerary). 2. The Scenic Bay of Islands hotel was very out of the way compared to the other hotels in the area. It didn't quite seem to be up to the same level of \"premiere\" standing as the Sky City Grand or the Regent of Rotorua (more on this hotel later). The hotel was not crowded at all (in fact I would say we were one of 3 people staying at the hotel) but yet they put us up in a ground floor room way in the back of the property. When I asked about a possible upgrade the answer was that our room was already upgraded. It showed me one of two things, their upgraded room was not up to premiere standards OR they just didn't care to put their best foot forward. It seemed as though they were nickel and dime-ing everything. (Ed. Thanks for the feedback - this hotel is changing on next seasons itinerary). 3. On the other hand the Regent of Rotorua was EXCELLENT!! Although very tired and wet from the long trip from the Bay of Islands the staff at the Regent were so friendly and accommodating I felt so embarrassed for the Scenic Bay of Islands. The Regent had originally upgraded us to their 2 bedroom suite and the room was set up so lovely! Little extra touches here and there that just made us feel welcomed. When we found out there was a leak in one of the bedrooms the manager Dwayne went out of the way to provide us several options to accommodate us. Again I can't say enough about how wonderful the staff was in making us feel welcomed and genuinely caring for our well being. 4. The half day tour of the Agrodome, Te Puia and Rainbow Springs was way too short. That said along with the wonderful Regent of Rotorua accommodation we all wished that we had one more day in Rotorua. All in all, it was a wonderful vacation and I have been recommending this vacation to all who ask. We definitely want to return and experience the rest that New Zealand as to offer. One week was definitely not enough. Thank you for all your help, we did have a great time!

A fantastic tour to a very beautiful country. I enjoyed the trip very much. Thanks Kirby for all the arrangements. So easy to visit all those places during a short stay. The Bay of Islands and Rotorua. The transports were on the dot for all the tours. There was only on one occasion that the driver did not turned up. We were not picked up after the Gondola ride but the Skyline management were more stressed up than we were about it. They got us a taxi for a free ride back to the hotel. We would definitely use your Relaxing Journeys services should we decide to visit New Zealand again. It is so convenient and so easy to travel.

Well thank you! We had a fantastic time. We came over to the Auckland for a wedding and wanted to see some of the place whilst we were there. It was the first time that we had been on a tour such as this, and I am already looking at the website again to see what we can do. Toni suggested this particular holiday to us as we had limited time over there. We just loved the organisation of it all - getting picked up at our door step and returned, we had nothing to think about except to be ready on time. Our trip from Auckland to the Bay of Islands was really lovely and our driver was quite informative. Here, we stayed at the Kingsgate Hotel. Fantastic view from the dining room overlooking the water - it was beautiful (and so was the buffet brekky). Paihia was a beautiful spot. From there we went up to Cape Reinga which was also beautiful. We managed to see quite a lot of the countryside. Our driver that day was Hoppy and he was extremely informative. He always had something to tell us. From there it was onto Rotorua. Again, we stayed at Kingsgate, which was clean and tidy. The dining room and buffet breakfast was lovely. We had such a full itinery here in Rotorua. We had so much to see and do. We had a Maori Concert and Hangi the first night which was wonderful. Next day was to Te Puia, Rainbow Springs and the Agrodome. We loved all of these. in the afternoon we had a mud bath and spa. Still thinking about that one, but at least I can say that it was certainly an experience. Next day back to Auckland via Waitomo to view the glow worm caves, this was truly amazing. I could just keep on telling you amazing things, but I'm sure I will run out of room, and I have to let you experience it for yourself. All in all, we had a fantastic time. Can't wait to come back over there. We will certainly be using Relaxing Journeys again when we do. Thank you to Toni and your team. It was truly wonderful.

Toni, we only returned home yesterday (25/02) from our round the world trip so sorry for delay in replying. On behalf of the four of us I would like to thank you and your company for a most enjoyable 5 day tour. The hotel 'Scenic Bay of Islands' was excellent (rooms were the best on our travels & buffet was excellent). At the Kingsgate in Rotorua there was a slight hiccup with one of the rooms but after a bit of diplomacy by their Supervisor it was partly resolved. Buffet was excellent in Bay of Islands, the cruise was excellent at Reitanga & 90 Mile Beach. We had a good day out at Rotorura. The half day tour wasenjoyable but a little hurried. The Hangi feast was excellent.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip. Hotel rooms were very good - in fact better than I thought they'd be (particularly the Scenic Circle Airedale in Auckland). The tour coach driver on the Saturday (20 June - Auckland to Paihia) was fantastic. Full of knowledge and gave excellent commentary (he also drove from Waitomo to Auckland on 24 June). As was Derek who took the Cape Reinga trip on the Sunday (21 June). He was a lovely friendly man. The Bay of Islands tour was supposed to stop at Otehi Bay and we were meant to be able to get off for a walk - didn't happen. It was meant to go until approximately 5.30 pm - finished at 4 pm. I have a feeling I paid for an extended tour and got the short version. But a lovely tour of the beautiful islands. The guy who took the Rotorua Morning Sights tour (23 June) was hopeless. Pointing out the 'Girls School' and 'church' and the 'park' and the 'bay' (no names) does not constitute an interesting tour of the town. Some more descriptions of interesting places would be good. I also thought that the tours at Te Puia, Rainbow Springs and the Agrodome were too short. Half an hour in the attraction then half and hour in the gift shop! At Rotorua I gained no knowledge of this fascinating area from any of the tour guides, either on the bus or at Te Puia. I wasn't informed that I needed to bring bathers and a towel for the Hells Gate Mud Bath and Spa. On reflection it seems obvious, but I thought that the bath and spa would be extra and I'd just not do that, but it was included in my cost, so to have brought my own bathers would have been useful! Hells Gate itself was fantastic. The self guided tour enabled me to gain a great deal of information about this area - great. The hotel at Rotorua (Kingsgate) was lovely but too far from anywhere. However, overall it was a great trip. I would recommend it to others (I'd just warn them they will be sitting on a bus much more than the itinerary alludes to).

We had a great time. We were interested in the Maori Culture and were happy with what we learned. Especially enjoyed the commentary from the Maori bus drivers. We did give ourselves some down time in between tours and that worked our very well for us, since we're older. Also some time on our own to see Auckland and Christchurch was really nice. The weather was wonderful the whole 3 weeks which of course was a real plus. Would definitely recommend both of the tours we took. Thanks for the help.
