Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Auckland

Haere Mai – Welcome to Auckland. On completion of formalities, you will be met and transferred to your accommodation. The afternoon is yours to relax or to explore the ‘City of Sails’. Auckland is New Zealand’s largest and most vibrant city, offering an exciting array of cosmopolitan experiences. Family attractions abound and the city has plenty of adrenaline for adventure lovers. Indulge in Auckland’s shopping, nightlife and unrivalled cuisine. Discover why Auckland is one of the best places in the world to live – and visit.

Day 2
Auckland - Waitomo Caves - Rotorua

From Auckland travel south through lush Waikato farmland, past Hamilton, to Waitomo Caves for a boat ride under a galaxy of glow-worms. Continue east to Rotorua, steeped in Maori culture and history. Tonight enjoy a Maori Hangi (feast) and Concert, a quintessential New Zealand experience. Stay for 2 nights in Rotorua. (D) (2 nights)

Day 3
Rotorua & Hobbiton

This morning you will be met at your accommodation for your morning sightseeing tour of this city. Rotorua sits calmly atop some remarkable cracks in the earth’s crust – sometimes giving the impression that the town is on fire. This impression is reinforced by the hot mists of Te Puia, roaring geysers and boiling mudpools heated to unbearable temperatures. These contrast with the calm of the marae grounds and the work of the artisans at the Arts and Crafts Institute. Also see the Kiwi House, displaying these rare, native birds. Other highlights on your tour of Rotorua are the native and exotic vegetation at Rainbow Springs, which are world renowned for their pools of tame trout. The Agrodome Farm display features a vital section of New Zealand’s agriculture, sheep shearing and a sheep dog display.

This afternoon you will be taken to Matamata which has attracted Lord of the Rings enthusiasts from all over the world since a local farm became the setting for “the Shire” in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Here you will take a tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set, including the hobbit holes, and discover middle-earth movie magic.

The Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, Mill and other structures created for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films can be viewed and you will see how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle-earth. Upon completion of your tour of the set you will return to The Shires Rest and then to Rotorua.

Day 4
Rotorua - Wellington

Drive south to Wairakei – wreathed by steam, then to Taupo. Skirt Lake Taupo, and cross the volcanic landscape of the Desert Road past the majestic peaks of Tongariro, Ngaruahoe and Ruapehu. Continue across the fertile plains of the Manawatu and along the rugged Kapiti coastline to Wellington. Arrive late afternoon for a 2 night stay. (2 nights)

Day Day 5
Wellington - Lord of the Rings Tour

Your full day tour today will show you the best of Middle Earth. Accompanied by your story-telling Lord of the Rings expert, stops include the Hutt River (Great River Anduin) and Harcourt Park (Gardens of Isengard and where the Orcs felled the trees), as well as Kaitoke Regional Park which was the setting for Rivendell. Situated in a thousand year old New Zealand Native rainforest, you will see why the Elves chose to live here! Visit Weta Cave. In the mini-museum you will come face to face with some of the characters, props and displays from your favourite movies. Read the stories of how they were brought to life and learn about the artists who created them. An Orc sized lunch with LOTR themed menu is included. (L)

Day 5
Depart Wellington

Your visit to Middle Earth regrettably comes to an end today and so with fond memories of mountains and fiords, glaciers and sparkling braided rivers drifting in your memory, we will transfer you to Wellington airport where you will depart on your scheduled flight over our great Misty Mountains for a safe and pleasant journey home. Haere ra, Ka hoki mai ano (Farewell, but return again).

The trip went very smoothly, thanks to Relaxing Journeys who made all the arrangements. I had multiple transfers starting from Auckland to Rotorua to Taupo then Wellington, all pick-ups & transfers were on time, also the hotels arranged by Relaxing Journeys were v good & comfortable esp the Bolton Hotel in Wellington which had a kitchen & living room, plus 2 large double beds. I highly recommend using Relaxing Journeys when planning for NZ trip.

Relaxing Journey had everything planned down to the smallest detail. It was so nice not having to worry about driving and enjoying the countryside. The people were so nice and it was so easy using the vouchers and having everything done. We appreciate all the hard work you did for our wonderful trip. I would gladly recommend Relaxing Journeys for your trip to New Zealand!

Everything with a few exceptions worked out great. All transfers were smooth and hotel standard/service was very good except for Travelodge in Wellington. However in most hotels wi-fi did not work 100% or I needed assistance to connect (resetting of routers). The mishap when I was not picked up in Roturoa for the Hobbiton tour has been communicated to you earlier. If I would wish for something more it would be that when you go on tours the guide would tell you at the start of a tour what to expect for stops and meals. Generally the options for healthier snacks or meals while on the road were limited or non-existent (especially on the Cape Reinga trip and getting to/from Paihia). As I am not a native English speaker, some dialects/accents are hard to understand. Our driver guide to Cape Reinga was very difficult to understand. But the sand-boarding was one of the highlights of my trip. And if the dune had not been so high to climb I would have done it again! The Capital Tastes tours in Wellington was another highlight and I would not have been able to do a tasting menu after the walk.

Thank you Mani for our wonderful trip to New Zealand. Overall, the trip was excellent! Upon arriving at the airport, the transportation was a breeze and check in to our first hotel was no problem at all. The travel package you provided with all the vouchers and information sheets was very helpful. Most transportation and tour companies were on time, if not early. The activities and tours we booked were fun and entertaining. Highlights would be the intimate winery tours. Our tour guide was spectacular and very friendly. Another highlight would be the Agrodome. Too quick, but it was fun. Rotorua was our favorite destination and the Regent of Rotorua is spectacular. The staff were phenomenal.

Our least favorite was the unexpected full day bus ride from Rotorua to Wellington. The bus was full of unhygienic backpackers and we didn't realize the bus would make over a dozen stops along the journey. This day was quite disappointing. We would have spent the extra money to go a different way. (Ed. No other way - except for a longer way where you can break it up with an overnight stay :) The hotel in Wellington, the Copthorne, should not be recommended by Relaxing Journeys. The hotel is not premium service nor is the customer service on point. What more, the hotel had no air conditioned rooms for us. Last, but certainly not least, was the optional tour we booked ourselves with SkyDive Auckland. It was the best ending to our vacation in NZ and something everyone must try at least once. Exhilarating and intense! Add this tour to your packages and encourage people to sky dive. Unbelievable! Thank you again, Mani, for arranging our travel throughout NZ and we look forward to returning again in the future.

Thank you for helping me set this tour up Tony Harris. You were brilliant, efficient and friendly. The tour itself was really good. I think being a bit more Tolkien knowledgeable would have helped but I initially looked at the tour because my wish to see a reasonable amount of the North Island in a short time and nothing else was really suitable for the time period I had and still cost effective. I do like the Lord of the Rings so thought it would be fun to combine the two. So the Wellington tour was only half of what i would have liked to see. But as a whole I think you have set up a great tour and the way it is organised is very efficient. I will look for your site again should I ever wish to return to view more of the country. Thanks again Toni.

We booked our tour to New Zealand on relatively short notice and took a blind leap of faith booking through Relaxing Journeys. To say we were satisfied would be an injustice. We were extremely satisfied. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable in their subject matters. The Maori hangi was exceptional. The accommodations met and exceeded our expectations. Timeliness was flawless. If times needed to be changed, notice was given in sufficient time to adjust. The tours scheduled for us were perfect for our age and physical abilities and we also enjoyed our 'days off'. Jack from Rover Tours in Wellington (who escorted us for a full day) was the best tour guide ever. He was a walking encyclopedia of everything related to Lord of the Rings and Hobbits.

We used Relaxing Journeys to plan and coordinate our holiday in New Zealand and were very pleased with the arrangements. We would recommend their services to our friends, and would use them again if we return to New Zealand. Although we were traveling independently, all of our accommodations and transportation, as well as numerous tours and excursions, were prearranged and this allowed us to relax and truly enjoy the journey. The hotels exceeded our expectations and every tour was first rate. We enjoyed this semi-independent way of traveling as we could sight see on our own, eat as we pleased, etc., but without the hassle of worrying about getting transportation or a hotel. It was ideal for us.
