Your journey begins today on arrival into Christchurch. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your stylish and comfortable hotel. Enjoy a city sights tour this afternoon and a welcome dinner this evening.
Stay: The Commodore Christchurch (D)
Board the TranzAlpine train for one of the world’s greatest rail adventures. Journey through the striking patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, before travelling across the magnificent Southern Alps within Arthur’s Pass National Park. Disembark at Arthur’s Pass and travel by coach to Hokitika. Here, you’ll enjoy the opportunity to see pounamu (jade) being skilfully carved into ornaments or pieces of jewellery. Afterwards, continue along the dramatic New Zealand West Coast to Franz Josef, where you’ll have the opportunity to take in the dramatic terrain and icy surrounds of the striking Franz Josef Glacier. Sitting at just 250m above sea level, Franz Josef is quite unique as it is one of just three glaciers in the world that descends into temperate rainforest. Its low altitude and mild climate creates a spectacular environment, where stunning ice formations are juxtaposed against the lush canopy of the surrounding forest. Continue on to our hotel set on the edge of Westland Tai Poutini National Park. Tonight, enjoy a four-course degustation dinner.
Stay: Te Waonui Forest Retreat, Franz Josef Glacier (B, D)
Enjoy a day of truly breathtaking scenery as you travel along the Haast River. Arrive in Queenstown, the country’s ‘adventure capital’, where you’ll choose from four tempting restaurants. Perhaps sample the delicious fresh produce at waterside Finz seafood restaurant, or take a scenic gondola ride to Stratosfare Restaurant. You may prefer to cruise aboard the TSS Earnslaw, a vintage steamboat, or dine amid the stylish surrounds of your hotel’s restaurant.
Stay: Novotel Queenstown Lakeside (2 nights) (B, D)
Personalise your Queenstown experience today. Perhaps embark on a Safari of the Scenes tour, and visit several local sites where the popular Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed as you discover the great affinity between the cinematic landscapes of New Zealand and that of Middle-earth. Thrill seekers may enjoy an exhilarating ride on the famous Shotover Jet, a Skippers Canyon adventure, or a river safari along the shimmering waters of the Dart River. New Zealand is rightly famous for its many vineyards and rich wines, and a tour of the country’s premier wine-producing region is a tempting option. Other activities include a bird walk through surrounding wilderness, or a leisurely cruise on shimmering Lake Wakatipu. (B)
This morning we journey north to World Heritage-listed Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, where you can choose your activity. Perhaps visit the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, including a visit to the planetarium and a stargazing session with an astronomer. Alternatively, during the summer months, board a MAC boat and get up close to icebergs on the Tasman Glacier Terminal Lake.
Stay: The Hermitage Hotel, Aoraki Mount Cook (B, D)
Travel to picturesque Lake Tekapo today. Here, you’ll pay a visit to the tiny Church of the Good Shepherd. Later, travel through delightful scenery along Burkes Pass to Christchurch Airport for your afternoon flight to Auckland.
Stay: Crowne Plaza, Auckland (B, D)
Cross Auckland’s busy harbour bridge this morning and travel along the Hibiscus Coast. Stop at Matakohe’s Kauri Museum for an insight into the rich pioneering history of New Zealand’s Northland region. Continue to the stunning Bay of Islands and visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the original treaty between the British and Māori people was signed. Here you’ll also enjoy a visit to the carved meeting house and ceremonial war canoe.
Stay: Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands, in a room with harbour views or similar (2 nights) (B, D)
Today, discover this spectacular region with a choice of activities. Perhaps take a day tour to Cape Reinga, New Zealand’s northernmost point, experience life aboard a tall ship, embark on a dolphin watching adventure, take a mini-tour of Russell, or return to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds for an enriching guided tour. (B)
Explore the spectacular Bay of Islands on a dolphin watching cruise to Cape Brett and the famous Hole in the Rock. In these deep-sea fishing grounds, dolphins are frequently seen. Meander through the inner islands, admiring the picturesque sandy beaches, rocky outcrops, and secluded bays. Return by coach to Auckland and enjoy a special dinner at your hotel to mark the end of the land tour.
Stay: Crowne Plaza, Auckland (B, D)
Enjoy a city sights tour this morning followed by select Freedom of Choice options (time permitting). This afternoon we say goodbye to our Tour Director as our land journey comes to an end. We arrive at Auckland Harbour to board our Holland America Line cruise ship, MS Noordam, our home for the next 13 nights.
Stay: Holland America Line’s MS Noordam in a Verandah Stateroom (14 nights) (B, D)
This morning your ship docks in the port of Tauranga. Once the site of fierce Māori wars, today it is a peaceful city in the heart of kiwifruit growing country. After breakfast you may choose to transfer to Rotorua where you can select from various sightseeing tours. Perhaps visit the Hobbiton Movie Set and gain an enthralling insight into the making of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Other options include learning about Māori culture, or witnessing the thrilling sight of erupting geysers at Hells Gate geothermal park. Others may prefer to relax and enjoy the scenery on a cruise on Lake Rotoiti, one of nine beautiful lakes in the district. (B, L, D)
Today the ship arrives in the town of Napier. Known globally as the ‘Art Deco capital’, Napier was rapidly rebuilt in the prevailing style of the 1930s after a devastating earthquake in 1931. Today’s optional shore excursions include a tour of Hawke’s Bay wineries, or an Art Deco highlights tour. Perhaps visit Clifton Station, a working sheep farm, and a tour of the Tuki Tuki Valley and Te Mata Peak where you will have panoramic views over Hawke’s Bay. Another option is a visit to the Clearview and Abbey Cellars where you can learn about the history of wine making in the region, and sample some of Hawke’s Bay’s finest wines at the cellar door. (B, L, D)
Arrive in New Zealand’s capital city today, famous for its Botanic Gardens which feature 25 acres of ponds, sculptures and beautiful native flora on a hillside overlooking the city and harbour. Wellington is also famous for its historic Cable Car that runs from the top of Kelburn overlooking the city, down to Lambton Quay, the main shopping street. Optional shore excursions include a Lord of the Rings tour where you will visit some of the locations featured in the famous film trilogy or a Seal Coast Safari to discover the rugged and unique beauty of the south coast in a 4WD vehicle, driving along unpaved roads and beaches to where a seal colony is situated. (B, L, D)
This morning your ship docks in the South Island for the very first time. Maybe explore Picton, in the upper reaches of the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound. (B, L, D)
This morning MS Noordam arrives in the port town of Akaroa, known for its historic French and English colonial architecture and vibrant café culture. Perhaps take a nature cruise around the beautiful natural harbour that was formed by an ancient cataclysmic volcano eruption. Learn about the fascinating geological history along with its rich marine life. Another option is to take a scenic helicopter flight and view the stunning scenery of the coast and countryside from above. You may also choose to visit the nearby city of Christchurch, which is continuing its recovery from the devastating earthquake of 2011. (B, L, D)
This morning we arrive in Port Chalmers at the southern end of New Zealand’s South Island, close to the city of Dunedin. Known as the ‘Edinburgh of the South’, this former gold mining town was once New Zealand’s largest city and its Victorian and Edwardian heritage is still proudly on display. This vibrant university town features many examples of its heritage architecture including the famous historic railway station, the town hall, municipal chambers, and St Paul’s Cathedral. Optional excursions today include a visit to historic Larnach Castle or a tour of the beautiful and wildlife-abundant Otago Peninsula. (B, L, D)
Today marks the most spectacular day of your cruise. Nothing can prepare you for the magnificence of Milford Sound, star of Fiordland National Park. As the MS Noordam glides through this pristine natural wonderland you will be mesmerised by the sight of towering mountains, including the famous Mitre Peak, and see waterfalls plunging from the sheer fiord walls. The bottomless depths of the sound are home to bottlenose and dusky dolphins, and watch out on the shores for Fiordland crested penguins and fur seals. (B, L, D)
Today the MS Noordam leaves New Zealand’s shores and heads west across the Tasman Sea. Between sumptuous meals you may decide to relax in your cabin or by the Lido Pool. The more energetic might spend some time in the fitness centre or take part in one of the many on-board activities that are available. (B, L, D)
