Welcome to Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island. Be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel.
Stay: Christchurch, Commodore Hotel (D)
Board the TranzAlpine train for one of the world’s greatest rail adventures. Journey through the striking Canterbury Plains before travelling across the Southern Alps. Disembark at Arthur’s Pass and travel by coach to Hokitika, where you’ll enjoy seeing pounamu (jade) being carved into jewellery. Continue to Franz Josef, where you’ll have the opportunity to take in the dramatic terrain and icy surrounds of striking Franz Josef Glacier. Tonight, enjoy a spectacular four-course degustation dinner.
Stay: Franz Josef Glacier, Te Waonui Forest Retreat (B, D)
Enjoy a day of truly breathtaking scenery as you travel along the beautiful Haast River, capturing views of the massive glacier-formed Haast River Valley. Wind your way past towering peaks, rushing waterfalls and lush rainforest. Arrive in Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure capital, where this evening you’ll choose from four tempting restaurants in which to dine. Perhaps sample the delicious fresh produce at waterside Finz seafood restaurant, or board a scenic gondola ride to Stratosfare Restaurant to enjoy panoramic views across Queenstown as you dine. Alternatively you may prefer to cruise aboard the TSS Earnslaw, a vintage steamboat, or dine amid the stylish surrounds of Elements Restaurant.
Stay: Novotel Queenstown Lakeside (2 nights) (B, D)
Few destinations offer as much variety as Queenstown. With a range of Freedom of Choice activities available, you can decide how to discover this adventure-filled region. There are many fabulous options on offer, including a jet boat ride on the Shotover River, a Safari of the Scenes tour, a wine tour, or a tranquil walk through the lakeside forest. (B)
Journey along the Milford Road as it winds its way down the Eglinton and Hollyford valleys and through the Homer Tunnel. Cruise the full length of pristine Milford Sound – a true highlight. Later, travel to the pretty lakeside town of Te Anau. This evening delight in the flavours of the South Island during an indulgent Taste of Fiordland dinner.
Stay: Distinction Te Anau Hotel and Villas (B, D)
Travel to the east coast and Dunedin today. Known as the Edinburgh of the South, the former gold mining town was once New Zealand’s largest city thanks to an influx of miners during the gold rush. This afternoon, choose your activity. Perhaps tour Larnach Castle, visit Olveston House, or head to Dunedin’s beautiful railway station and board the Taieri Gorge Railway. Those who enjoy a beer might like to tour Speight’s Brewery. Alternatively, nature lovers can either visit an albatross colony, see penguins, or take an off-road tour of the Otago Peninsula.
Stay: Dunedin, Scenic Hotel Southern Cross (B, D)
Enter the pristine and rugged Aoraki Mt Cook National Park and admire the majesty of Australasia’s highest peak. Discover this spectacular region with our exclusive Freedom of Choice inclusions. Perhaps visit the fascinating Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, including a stargazing experience with an astronomer. Alternatively, you may prefer to admire dramatic Aoraki Mt Cook on a guided nature walk through the national park. Another option is to board a MAC boat and get up close to icebergs on the Tasman Glacier Terminal Lake.
Stay: Aoraki Mt Cook, The Hermitage Hotel (B, D)
Leaving the snow-capped mountains of Aoraki Mt Cook National Park behind, this morning we travel by coach to picturesque Lake Tekapo. Here you’ll pay a visit to the tiny Church of the Good Shepherd, built of locally gathered stone and oak and erected as tribute to the early pioneers of the region. Continue travelling through Canterbury and delight in the scenery of Burkes Pass as you make your way back to Christchurch. After settling in, reflect on your journey with your newfound friends over a memorable farewell dinner.
Stay: Rydges Latimer, Christchurch (B, D)
Your wonderful New Zealand journey comes to an end today as you are transferred to the airport for your onward flight. (B)
