On arrival at Auckland Airport you will be transferred to your hotel. After check-in, take a walk down Queen Street to the main shopping precinct or catch an inner city bus (leaving from outside the hotel) down to Viaduct Harbour and the Auckland Waterfront. This recently developed area of the central city has cafes and restaurants galore. Take a seat in the sunshine, enjoy a glass of one of New Zealand’s famous sauvignon blancs, and watch the maritime activity on Waitemata Harbour. This evening meet your Travel Director for a welcome reception and highlight dinner
Stay: Stamford Plaza, Auckland (2 nights) (D)
Start the day with a sightseeing tour and a cruise on Waitemata Harbour before time at leisure. (B)
You’re invited to a Be My Guest lunch at the home of Lance and Bridgette O’Sullivan, New Zealand horse racing royalty. Enjoy a sumptuous country-style lunch at the Red Barn on their beautiful Waikato farm. This evening enjoy a traditional hāngī highlight dinner and cultural performance at Tamaki Māori Village.
Stay: Millennium Hotel, Rotorua (B, L, D)
Explore Rainbow Springs Nature Park, where you’ll be able to observe many species of native fauna of New Zealand. You may even spot a kiwi! Visit Te Puia before flying to Christchurch. (Airfare is not included and must be booked by you or your travel agent.)
Stay: Distinction Christchurch Hotel (B)
Travel on the TranzAlpine train to Arthur’s Pass. Regarded as one of the world’s great train journeys, it passes through fertile farmlands to rugged gorges and ice-fed streams and lakes. At Hokitika visit a pounamu (jade) studio. Take a short walk to view Franz Josef Glacier.
Stay: Te Waonui Forest Retreat (B, D)
Climb over the Haast Pass, winding past lakes and along the Kawarau River and Gorge. On the way to Queenstown you will stop and visit the faithfully restored gold mining settlement of Arrowtown. As you amble down the beautiful tree-lined avenues, past the 19th century wooden buildings, you will feel like you have stepped into a movie set.
Stay: Millennium Hotel, Queenstown (3 nights) (B)
Today is one of those days where you will want to have your camera battery charged and ready to go. And you will probably want to have a spare battery or two on hand… just in case. Travel over the Devil’s Staircase to Te Anau and then through the rainforest of World Heritage-listed Fiordland National Park, sighting glaciers and mountain ranges. Drive on one of the most scenic roads you could hope for. Travel through native rainforests, beech forests, alluvial flats and meadows. You will stop at Mirror Lakes where, as the name suggests, you can see the stunning mountain scenery perfectly reflected in the waters. Then on to the Homer Tunnel, man’s attempt to master the sheer rocky ranges, still left rough-hewn around the edges. As you emerge out the other side of the tunnel, you are presented with one of the world’s most dramatic alpine drives, down through the Cleddau Valley. You will have a stop at the Chasm, where the roaring Cleddau River has carved its way through solid rock, and then it’s on to Milford Sound, where you will cruise on the waters of this natural wonder. (B, L)
Explore exciting Queenstown your way! Why not soar through the trees on a Ziptrek Ecotour, or raft the mighty white water rapids of the Kawarau River? Take the opportunity to encounter a Queenstown legend and ride the Shotover Jet, or venture out onto the Dart River for a longer jet safari. If laid-back and relaxed is more your idea of fun, join a Queenstown Original Wine Tour and sample some of Central Otago’s award-winning wines, or play a round of golf at one of the spectacular alpine courses around Queenstown. Your AAT Kings Travel Director will assist you in booking all of your chosen optional experiences.
After a day of activity, join your Travel Director for a farewell dinner at The Boat Shed, with its views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables. (B, D)
Say farewell to your fellow travellers when your holiday comes to an end this morning after breakfast. (B)
