Tour Itinerary
Voted “best day out” in January 2008 by NZ’s Metro Magazine, a day trip cruising from Auckland to Tiritiri Matangi Island is not to be missed.
Get up close and personal with one of the world's most successful conservation projects - Tiritiri Matangi Island. See some of New Zealand's most endangered birds and rare wildlife in this open sanctuary. Managed by the Department of Conservation in partnership with Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi, the 'open sanctuary' status allows the public to visit and enjoy this rare treat.
During the last 21 years almost half a million native trees have been planted allowing the re-introduction of 11 threatened native bird species. Guided walks provide expert commentary and lend context to both animal life and the historical and archaeological features of the island. Those with an interest in eco-tourism, indigenous history and early New Zealand will find this discovery of particular interest.
Walking tracks and look-out points offer spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf. Wildlife discovery is suitable for all ages and abilities.
Tiritiri Matangi Island is a wildlife sanctuary and it is vital that it remains pest-free. Before you depart on our vessel please check your bags for rodents and insects and ensure your footwear, clothing and bags are clean and free of seeds and/or seed material. Please ensure your lunch is packed in a rodent-proof container such as hard plastic or metal. Our guide was very knowledeable, and we saw lots of birds very close up.

We enjoyed the tour in spite of the wet conditions. We chose this excursion because of our interest in the NZ birds and we were pleased with what we were able to see. Our volunteer guide on the day was enthusiastic and interesting. We would recommend this tour to others with similar interests to ourselves.

This was my favorite place, it just shows what a dream and dedicatation can do to restore what man destroyed. I cant believe the transformation of this island in such a short time, being the re-vegetation and helping the survival of animal species. The volunteers that helped shape this island are truly remarkable. This is a must see, so add it to your itinerary when visiting Auckland.
