Church of the Good Shepherd, Lake Tekapo

Church of the Good Shepherd is situated on the shores of Lake Tekapo. In 1933 some residents wrote the Anglican Vestry, Reverend W.E.D. Davies, asking for a church to be built and backed their suggestion with generous promises of money and land. Mr George Murray, Braemar Station, donated the land.

The foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Gloucester in January 1935 and seven months later dedicated in August 1935. Built to last from lakeside stone and oak with a clear plate glass window to allow a view of the blue lake from its dam-controlled outlet at the village, due north for almost 20 kilometres to tussock brown hillsides and mountain scenery.

It was designed by Christchurch architect R.S.D. Harman, based on sketches by a local artist, Esther Hope. The church is arguably one of the most photographed in New Zealand, and features an altar window that frames stunning views of the lake and mountains.

New Zealand's Lake Tekapo has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. That is why the area has become one of the most popular locations for weddings in the world, both for New Zealanders and for people from abroad. There is a vast choice of wedding venues in the Tekapo area and we only mention the popular ones.
